Before becoming a filmmaker, Weiss had been known in Germany as a playwright who penned such controversial productions as The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, which was later made into a film by director Peter Brook.
