She made her film debut in The Pumpkin Eaters (1964), following it up with a small role in Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965). On television Nicholls may best be remembered for playing Cordelia in the internationally popular miniseries Brideshead Revisited (1982). Some of the films she has appeared in include David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980) and Nicolas Roeg's made-for-television drama Heart of Darkness (1994).
