After graduating from Harvard and studying art in Rome, Samuels began her career as a painter and multimedia artist in Boston. She began incorporating film into her visual art, fell in love with the medium and moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking. Her first job in the industry was developing and writing scripts for legendary producer Roger Corman, who has served as a mentor to many of the best U.S. directors, from Francis Ford Coppola to James Cameron to John Sayles. In addition to her feature films, she has directed music videos, episodic TV for the SciFi channel, and two documentaries for MTV Networks. Samuels still paints between directing projects.
