Bio: Brought to Hollywood as a technical advisor and dialect coach for How Green Was My Valley (1941), he unexpectedly was given an important supporting role in the film by its director, John Ford. This began his prolific career in Hollywood films as a character actor; he was particularly busy onscreen during the '40s.
