Before settling in Hollywood in 1937, Buckner was an instructor at the Belgian Military Academy, a magazine editor, playwright (The Primrose Path), and short-story author. Long associated with Warner Bros., he functioned as both a screenwriter (earning an Oscar nomination for Yankee Doodle Dandy) and producer (Gentleman Jim, Mission to Moscow, Confidential Agent, Life with Father). Switching to Universal in 1948, Buckner won a Golden Globe award for Bright Victory (1951), which he wrote and produced. From 1955 to 1958, he kept busy in British-American co-productions.
