Cecchi started her professional career as a journalist and translator, turning to screenwriting after World War I. She made her mark in the Italian cinema's "neorealist" movement with her contributions to Cesare Zavattini's script for Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief (1947). Beginning with Bellisima (1951), she worked on virtually every one of the films directed by Luchino Visconti. She later collaborated with Michelangelo Antonioni, Mario Monicelli, and Franco Zeffirelli. On one isolated occasion, Suso Cecchi D'Amico turned actress, appearing onscreen in the Visconti-directed segment of Boccaccio '70 (1962). D'Amico died at age 96 in the summer of 2010. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
