Grammatikov started out as an actor at the Young Spectator's Theater. He subsequently worked as a director and choreographer at the Stanislavsky Drama Theater and Obraztsov Puppet Theater in Moscow. Grammatikov entered films as an actor in 1966, appearing in the feature Ne Samy Udachny Den/Not the Luckiest Day. He subsequently appeared in many more. In 1971, he enrolled at VGIK to study film direction under Efim Dzigan.
