I can't believe we're up to 5 people working on Flixster
now! Of course, there are over 1.5 million people using
it now and I really can't believe that so...
Without further ado - meet the new guys behind Flixster.
Steve makes
the servers go chug-chug-chug. (Rumor is he's a hit with
the ladies too!) Ask him who Morton Subotnick is and
while you're at it thank him for keeping everything
running so smoothly with all the new users.
If you're ever up around 4am post some talk to Rodrigo. You can
be pretty sure he's awake and working hard to keep the
backend of Flixster humming smoothly and calculating all
those MCT scores!
You know the slick new pop-up thingy when you hold the
mouse over a user or movie? That was all Eugene. In fact,
most of the new features you've seen recently were his
handiwork. Takes a mean photo too!
Oh, i almost forgot about Hannah!!! Hannah
is a good friend who helps us out part time answering
your questions, covering for our mistakes and helping
anyone who gets lost on the site. She is the best and I
don't know what we would do without her!
That's everyone. If you like Flixster - drop these guys
a note and say thanks.
I have made a phpnuke block for Flixster available at
http://cms-miracle.org you can actually see it working
there. I will port it to any CMS on request, just go to
the forums there and post the cms. I may need copies of
different blocks for the cms to port it, but it can be
done quickly and painlessly.
Right now its for php nuke users. Go to the forums at cms-
miracle if you want it for your CMS.
Any way to make it just a tad wider?? I think the widget
is intended to be 200 pixels wide so your reviews were a
bit hard for me to read on my screen.
That particular theme as a 170 width so couldn't make it
larger most themes only have 120. There are two ways to
take care of it, Flixster comes up with a thinner
version, or one say about 300 wide like google has done
for nukers. I can still do blocks for both ways but right
now can only work with what I have. Maybe 120x300 view
and 468x100 view would be great
Tagsimon - Got it. We're exploring some new sizes and
formats so i'll see what we can do. Meanwhile - you
should post your block to phpnuke.org - its cool!
It was released on phpnuke.org as well as other places.
Don't mean it will show up. I just released a module
last week and they just put it up the other day. Not sure
he will post the second this soon.
You can see what it looks like as a center block at
http://bookwired.com near the bottom. As you can see with
both examples the center block needs to be wider and then
side blocks need to fit the 120x 300 size.
The module allows the webmaster to change the width, but
over 150 will tear up their tables, and the center block
just doesn't quite look as good as it could.
No - the little bit of money we do make is just from the ads you see (i know they suck - we'll hopefully get better movie-relevant ads at some point) - and it sure doesn't cover our costs. But Flixster is a labor of love! :)
Have you guys tried e-mailing DVD companies and maybe even movie companies? Heck, when I made a review site a few years back I got a contract with an online DVD store here in Australia, $150 a month for a simple ad on the site. I'm sure you guys could get heaps more.
As long as the contract doesn't make you promote certain movies I think its a great idea. But the thing I like about this place is the freedom to say crappy movies ARE crappy despite coming from a major film company or whatever.
