Seriously. We want to this to be the best and most fun
movie site on the web so this is the place to tell us
what you'd like us to add or change. We really want to
hear from you!
Keep in mind though that we are a small team, and we're doing our best to gather everyone's ideas. If you feel like we're not getting back to you, please contact brad or julia directly.
How about a weekly "column" thing on each person's account?
If not, then how about a certain group of educated movie goers be handpicked by the Flixster staff to take on the role of a movie column (article) each week or so, commenting on the new movies out on DVD and cinema, evaluating some recent films watched, and generally putting in that bias that makes people glued to their reviews.
I think it's a fantastic idea, one to bring the community together more effectively. There are columns throughout a number of literary websites, why not have some on Flixster?
ok joe you won't believe this, on my computer at home.... flixster has been blocked! i'm gonna die, I think it's do to the nudidty and ummm it said the personals...it's total crap! i think it's nuts what am I gonna do Help me:(
There are many duplicate movies in the database. Don't know how you've set things up, but if it's easy to merge two entries into one or something then maybe make a "Duplicates" forum where people can post them when they find them.
For example, Battle Royale and Dawn Of The Dead (1978).
"Q: Can you give "+1" to everybody, or do you only have a certain number of "points" to give out so you have to pick your 10 favorites?"
I don't think there should be a limit. But at the same time (and this could be tricky and time consuming) if a user exploits the feature then the ability should be blocked for that user. Or maybe there could be a rule where in order to have the ability to use this feature a user must have at least 100 reviews (or something of the sort), that way you avoid new users just going crazy giving random +1's.
Would it be possible to make the movie search better? When I type in an actor/actress I only get like 5 movies they were in and then the rest are just other actors with the same first name or whatever. Thanks.
- How about a way of finding people who have rated the most movies or something? I'd like to find as many people as possible who hav rated over 100 movies. Not a demand, just a thought.
- I'd still like o organize my friends somehow though.
You need a better movie search. If I enter "The King and I", I should see "The King and I" as the #1 match. Instead I get a list of 100 movies which have the word "King" in the name and "The King and I" isn't even on the first page.
RE MCT comparisons, this doesn't make any sense to me:
Not Interested vs 3 stars -- "Hmmmm"
Want to See It vs 3 stars -- "Good"
This may go back to the even vs odd number of ratings available. To me, 3 stars signifies middle of the road, meaning Great and Horrible would be equidistant from 3 stars. Apparently the MCT doesn't agree.
Also, 2.5 stars vs 4 stars gets a "Hmmmm", but Want to See it vs 3 stars gets a "Good". That doesn't seem right. The second pairing doesn't seem more a match than the first pairing.
I don't like how Flixster handles multiple DVD releases of the same movie. In fact, I'm not really clear on how this is handled. Here's how I think it works, but shouldn't:
-Some movies have multiple releases as separate records, I saw this with some Disney DVD. However, not all, for instance, I own 2 different versions of Almost Famous, but it's only in the system once.
-The movie year displays the year of DVD release, rather than the theatrical release. Not sure if I like this, seems confusing. Maybe both should be displayed somehow?
-How does a movie transition from 'In Theaters' to 'On DVD'? Do I have to re-rate it? If I rate it 'In Theaters', and then 2 different DVD releases are done, does the rating carryover?
I can sort of understand the benefit of rating separate DVD releases separately ("the 1st Star Wars release was awesome, but the second with new edits sucked"), but I don't think most of your users really care about the quality of individual DVDs
INCLUSION OF TV SHOW'S MAYBE lost, arrested development, 24, futurama etc etc as a suggestion, kinda goes out of the Flicks, but would certainly be something else to discuss and share opinions on
I have another idea. We need to have the ability to make some movies in the MCT exempt from counting against someone. Because i have found a lot of "good friends" and everything is going perfect exept for like 2 categories and they are usually movies that i don't care if they liked or not. Movies that i didn't want to see at first either. I think the not interested rating is too harsh in the MCT.
"not interested" and "want to see it" shouldn't be included in the compatibilty.. Wanting to see it doesn't mean anything and not being interested doesn't mean I won't actually like it.
Thanks for the continued great suggestions!!!! I don't have time right now to reply to all of them (though i definitely read all of them) but a few quick comments...
DVDs & duplicates - we don't ever intend to have more than one entry for a single movie - i.e. we don't mean to treat widescreen different than regular or whatever. It happens sometimes because we are poor people and can't afford to buy expensive movie industry data so we do it ourselves. if you find duplicates of movies - send an email to contact@flixster and we go through and merge/remove them as fast as possible.
Search - Yeah, getting search to be really great is hard - that is why them google guys make the big bucks. One thing we'd like to do is add an "advanced search" where you can specify more stuff to narrow in, that should help. Also, actor/actress pages with a full filmography to address that case. Ah, so much to do!
MCT Scoring Comments - both of you make good points. (cont.)
(MCT Comments continued) - I'll have to ponder about the best way to use WTS & NI in the scoring. Def seems like it should mean SOMETHING if i am NI in a film you rated 5 stars, right?
TV Shows - that would be fun! I have a problem with old West Wing reruns that borders on clinical addiction.
Find users by name/email - Seriously, what kind of crap site wouldn't have that? We're working on it! :)
I guess you realise that we're not all in USA and in fact we're not all based in English speaking countries which means that the films all have different titles where we live. I have searched most of the films by actors and then reading the reviews I know which film it must be. Is there a way of adding the foreign film titles to the site? For example I know that the German title for Pride and Prejudice is Stolz und Vorurteil (that was an easy one seeing as its my favourite). I could add that to the synopsis to make the search easier for other German speakers and they could add the titles that they know, one Frenchman/Italian/Spaniard could help the next.
Just an idea!
A movie columns or article part of the site for selected reviewers! AKA, the best reviewers as voted by the Administrative staff or people in general. I'd love to see some intellectual insight on the site, and it would grab more of the tasteful individuals and bring them here to talk amongst the mainstream masses.
