I'm slowly moving some of my reviews on a number of "cult" titles from Screen Select to this site in the up that it will spark some interest in films that occupy the fringe of cinema. I'm also trying to make a list of cult films that are missing from the site and sending them on to the web page editors. If have a cult titles you'd like to see added then let me know.
Even though nobdoy has replied to this post I just thought I'd update it and say that Russ Meyer is now fully covered on the site and there are 3 Walerian Borowczyk added:
Contes Immoraux (Immoral Tales, 1974)
Dzieje Grzechu (Story of a Sin, 1975)
La Bete (The Beast, 1975)
They've also added Murder in a Blue World (Eloy de la Iglesia, 1973) aka Clockwork Orange (no not the Kubrick film)
well i'm not too sure what to class as cult but i will add a few that i believe are cult...funnyman,into the mirror, and dark city...let me know if i'm wrong cus i have no idea if they're classed as cult or just weird...lol...
Well I've used the word "cult" loosely because it can mean different things to different people but I'm looking to add films that are generally not considered mainstream. So I'm looking at genres like Blaxploitation, Sexploitation, Giallo, Italian Crime films, Art-house/foreign language, Spaghetti Westerns etc. Of course examples of these genres have reached mainstream audiences but most are seen by a small number of people or are generally ignored by the mainstream press. I have a fondess for 1970s cinema which was probably a peak period for weird and wonderful films, the likes of which will probably never be seen again.
Buffalo 66 is what I'd class as the ultimate Cult film, its by Vincent Gallo with Christina Ricci and its hell fringe cinema at it fringest! Plus heaps of ppl like it without it become overly popular ...like Donnie Darko thats not cult anymore cause basically everyone's seen and loves that now...
L.I.E i just watched that flick lol not bad
man we need some more robert downey sr films on this site like
greasers palace and pound
another great flick and one of my all time fav is
o lucky man directed by lindsay anderson
other picks
skidoo
el topo
la luna
any of the short fils by Kenneth Anger
la jetee
any films by Fernando Arrabal (Viva la muerte, I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse)
The "Ultimate" cult film which is also pretty mainstream is The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it really is the mother of all cult films. Little or no plot, interesting characters, no predictability. HAZA! The movie was a flop but is cult beyond belief, go see it in a small theater, dress up, and bring the classic things. Water gun, newspaper, confetti, the works! But if I had to CHOOSE a favourite cult film, I'd best say Repo-Man. Man Emilio is the shit... Well I enjoy cult films thoroughly. If you have any exotic (I don't really mean EXOTIC) cult films you'd like to share, I'd appreciate it.
