Its been two weeks or so since we added our first couple moderators on the site. (And lets all give a huge thanks to kyle & kalel for taking ont he duties!)
Just wanted to check in with everyone and see if people feel like its made a difference? The goal was to do a better job keeping a check on spammers and totally offensive comments in the forums and elsewhere as well as just being around with a bit more help and support.
I think the problem is that most people on the site don't know how to report problems. I was added to a conversation telling everyone to stay away from a certain guy posting messages to people's pages. But the conversation message described the entire message. Everything offensive in the original message was still there, it just wasn't directed at anyone.
Is there a way to send a massive message to everyone. Maybe start a conversation telling everyone who the mods are, and what the procedere is to inform the mods, and what exactly qualifies as a reason to report. And what happens to the offenders. Tell everyone to add everyone. Say "Official Message from Flixter or something"
I have made this suggestion before in another thread but maybe it is possible for everyone to automatically have Kalel and Kyle on their friends list - preferably at the top of their friends list - so that it is easier to find them and contact them.
Another slight problem is that I have noticed quite a lot of these "sex offer" messages come from the African continent. Nothing racist here but that's the way it is and it happens on other sites too. Maybe you could find a third Moderator to cover the European/African time zone. Admittedly Kyle never seems to sleep but I have chatted to young British girls who were having problems and not knowing who to report it to and neither of them were around.
I would still like them to be able to move threads also. I'm still not bothering posting much serious topics because they are buried by everything else.
Just take a look at the reviews forum. Almost every thread has little or nothing to do with a review. It still has a typo in its description too:
Do you write "real" reviews? Series filmies share here.
The mods haven't been a problem...yet. ;) Let's just hope these forums don't eventually become censored like every other board on the net.
Democracy and freedom of speech are the keys.
The moderators have been doing pretty good but they aren't really going to the random chatter much. The random chatter is where all of the spamming and other stuff usually takes place. But they are doing a great job, I've been noticing people talking about the Moderators and then deleting all their posts so the Moderators won't read it.
The Random Chatter section is one of the first that I go to because of the fact that it is (by far) the most used of the forums. I have deleted A LOT of spam from that forum and have halted further spamming from certain users.

We really could do with more
There is a huge spammer(loser) who has posted over 60 pages of threads and no one to delete his offensive posts or account
Yes, at first I started attempting to delete all of the threads (47 pages of them, thats 1175 threads) however it simply takes too long so I contacted one of the administrators (Eugene) and he said he would delete all of the threads from the database which takes him 20 seconds as opposed to me doing it manually which would take about 4 hours :P.
Fortunately some new thread restrictions are being put into place in the same way that posting replies is (Like how you can't post a comment with nothing in it).
The administrators are currently discussing the situation as I post this.
Oh, and for the record, I spend probably 50% of my time in the RC board alone seeing as it is the 'hot zone' for any kind of problem (spam, offensive users etc).
if u want the.. um... 'colourful' language, go to the movies/videos page and observe the conversation, i mean they litterally have cat fights on there. kinda funny, but not appropriate.
oh, and 2 stop the chain letters(lots of ppl hate them), u should only b allowed a certain # of ppl in 1 convo.
major concern of scammers/ spammers and members that contain very offensive photos on their profiles example animal porn pics. example member Nokia306 he been member for 193 days just by lookin at his profile he certainly doesnt look like he is into movies at all well movies that HUMAN BEINGS watch.
I feel that maybe flixster needs more Mods or Admins or something so that there can be more control over this sort of thing. Maybe Mods need a bit more Power to do something as well.
i have been a member for over 140 days and of what i have seen so far i wont let my daughter become a member on here at all.
maybe the age limit needs to be increased before a person can actually sign up as a member like produce something like you have to on adult sites. Cause on here you can make up any information to sign up and who would really know for sure think it needs tightening up more somehow. its a shame really making a site like this which is suppose to be for families friends and what not and to be destroyed by people like that. i dont go round searching for baddies i have had few scammers on my profile so that is why i put special msg in my about me page to scammers since i have done that i dont get no scammers *touch wood* hehe then i happen to read the post of member nokia306 and that ticked me off when i saw those disgusting pics in his photos. Then i showed my friend he was horrified at it.
peachysweetlips, I've noticed a lot of your complaints have been about the 'quality control' on the photos here. Giving moderators power over the pictures that are uploaded is currently in development. Keep in mind that moderators are still experimental right now, and we don't have a lot of powers.
It is possible that more moderators are needed/will be needed in the future, but also make sure that for now that your suggestions do not have to do with inability to deal with problems, rather than the lack of manpower.
I know that I for one personally read and respond to every private message that deals with user problems, whether it be inappropriate actions or graphic photos and attempt to deal with them as best I can with the powers and tools available to me right now. I also make sure that I include what I plan on doing in my response so that the person who reported the problem knows that I *am* taking action as opposed to avoiding it.
Unfortunately, many of times it does look like I am avoiding the problems due to the lack of abilities I am given. For example, the problem with graphic.nude pictures. I can't personally delete them, so instead I give the user a temporary ban and tell s/he to delete their photos or that more severe consequences will be given. If the user does not delete said pictures, I pass it on to Hannah who DOES have the power to delete them. This simply prevents Hannah from being inundated with problems if they can be avoided or dealt with in other ways
