It was a very nice movie. The special effects were amazing, and though people find it appalling that there could be a movie so "controversial", I liked it, and found the story to be somewhat sticking to the book, though they took a lot of parts out.
I give it 7/10.
What do all of you think?
I have to admit i went into the movie not having read the book. Based on past performances this could be a bad idea (i.e. da vinci code, harry potter) because they cut so much out. However, i thought the movie moved along well and the special effects were relatively good (bear fight). Acting was average though, i dont really get the hype on dakota but overall id said 5/6 out of 10.
I read the book a week before going to the movie. If you have not read the book you should pick it up. It's a quick read and makes you think. The movie did capture alot of the fun of the book, so if you did not read it you may still enjoy the film.
My only problem was how the film makers compressed parts of the story for time. Also if the movie was the book it ended about 50 pages to soon.
It's a good thing this movie did so bad.
I'm reading the second book THE SUBTLE KNIFE, fifty pages into it and I'm more pissed at the movie then ever. Because one of the parts in the book was cut from the movie, a major part of the continuing story is missing. I don't know how they can do a second movie without this subplot.
The second book is much darker then the first. The film makers were to chicken s@#t to keep alot of the dark stuff from the first, I don't want to think about what would be cut from the next.
I myself thought the movie was pretty good. Yes, they cut out a lot of stuff for time, but that is to be expected. The fact that they did end the movie a few chapters before the end of the book is a little disappointing though. The acting isn’t award winning, but it is OK. Nicole Kidman is a good Mrs. Coulter, while Sam Elliot is a perfect Lee Scoresby.
As for a sequel (The Subtle Knife), from my understanding, it is a pretty low chance that it will get made. It seems that the The Golden Compass didn’t do as well as expected in the theaters. I guess we will have to just wait and see.
