He's retired Borat and Ali G, so no official Borat sequals, I think he'll come up with some more characters though, whats weird is some people don't know that Borat and Ali G were played by the same person, also lots of people are shocked at the fact Sacha Baron Cohen is Jewish (if you've seen Borat you'll know why)
Borat was nothing new for me because I have seen the show a million times, the only thing that was new was the people and situations. But I heard it was really hard for him to make Bruno because a lot of people knew who he was now and would be on the sides calling out "SACHA WE LOVE YOU" and shit like that :(
After seeing the uncut trailer in the cinema today (rather than the censored one on youtube)I am even more excited than ever. I wasn't even this excited for Borat. Cannot wait.
After seeing Bruno, it's so awkward what to say of it. In fact, I've been reserving my opinion for a week.
Here's the thing: Everyone liked Borat, and I mean a lot of people, so much that when I was in the screening I felt uncomfortable. It was not because of the film, but because I was surrounded in a packed house full of audiences who were laughing like hyenas.
It was one of those moments where I was thinking to myself, 'Something must be wrong with me if I do not find this funny'. What made matters worse is that after I left from the preview, the next day I found critics embracing this.
From my point of view, it was a smug school boy trying so desperately to get a rise out of people, like when lower school kid steals a senior's football just to get the attention. In short, it was not funny. I didn't buy it and when I didn't, the backlash was this: "You're fuckin retarded" "You don't get it, you fag" "You have no sense of humour".
Bruno is slightly more funny, but I was in that same situation where I was in the same packed house where people were laughing at the parts I didn't find funny. Bruno is slightly more funny than Borat, but it's not without reservations.
I have to admit I did giggle at some scenes, but I don't think this act is going to carry on. I mean, obviously the makers were trying to push where they could, but the smug quality from Borat is still there. That's what distracts me, but that is what everyone found funny, apart from me.
I always felt Bruno was the least comical out of the show, and the movie was not on the same level as Borat for me. Not only because the character is only less likable than Borat, it relied heavily on scripting and the interviews were cut short. Also where Borat was more dialog driven, Bruno relied more so on shock value. Certain scenes were copied and pasted from the show too, which is cool if you are not familiar with the material. Its what I expected though, I had a few really big laughs and tears came out of one of them. Good breath of fresh air in a dead genre.
Mmm, I wouldn't personally say it's a breath of fresh air because while there were a few moments i did laugh, it's just invigorating how underlyingly smug it is.
I watched Gran Torino again on DVD and that had tons more laughs than Bruno did. Also, is a satirical comedy called In The Loop.
Can I also point out, I do not understand why the Latoya Jackson segment was cut in the wake of Michael Jackson. In "bad taste" as oppose to what?
*SPOILERS*
The parents who sell out their children? The Israel segment? The TV board room meeting? The African child? The interview with a terrorist organisation?
People are so fucking stupid, I am reading all these comments on the movie and what not. "dumbest movie have ever seen", lol ok I bet this same person enjoyed Step Brothers. "Gayest movie I have ever seen"...well Sacha did the right job on you. "I took my 15 year old daughter to see it, and had to walk out"...read why the movie is fucking rated R!!
Bruno was originally supposed to be NC-17 for it's very over the top content the film had. What I liked about Bruno was that it was just plain out funny. From the humor to the stuff Sacha Baren Coen did was just a riot. I can possibly tell this film is going to be controversial just as Borat was back in 2006 but all in all this was an extremely funny film.
The thing is that I do not mind the controversial/rude material. For mainstream audiences, this material is as crude as they'll find, but overall there are much more crude films out there.
Bruno in my opinion, has more laughs than Borat (which wasn't funny), but what distracts me is the blatant use of 'soft targets'. It is all well to observe at these targets, but sometimes it's like taking a huge sigh and going: 'yep, I know people in Alabama are anti-gay'. To me, I think the hole can't go and further and when you've reached the bottom, it starts to get tiring.
I bet Sacha could have got away with doing another Ali G movie but with the format of the show, if done correctly it would have been on par if not better than Bruno.
I was really hoping for this movie to be great, I've always enjoyed Bruno on Da Ali G Show and Borat was funny as hell but I was disappointed with it and wouldn't watch it again.
A good deal of it was staged, without a doubt. Borat, of course, had elements that were staged, but the majority of Bruno was fake and I think the reason he's so funny is because of the reactions he's able to get from other people, not just the things he says. So without that going for it, Bruno was mediocre at best.
Before Borat I wasn't a fan of his. I thought Ali G was just plain stupid and annoying. Borat was HILARIOUS. Original. Bruno had plenty of laughs, but it was nothing like Borat. I was never as shocked during Bruno as I was during Borats wrestling scene.
I thought Bruno was hilarious. Pushes it at times, may have gone a bit too far sometimes but fine for people who are over a certain age and have a sense of humour. You should know what your getting before going to see it anyway if you have ever seen any of Sacha Baron Cohens stuff before! :) No-one is going to leave the cinema without having a couple of laughs anyway at the very least.
