London to Brighton (2008, R)
Exceptional!!! Without doubt one of the best films that I have watched in a long time. A gritty, true to life storyline with very natural performances, particularly from the two main characters. This film held me from the get go and never failed to grab my attention throughout. Quite a frightening reality, which makes it a sensational Drama. |
|
| 2 |
Ghajini (2008, Unrated)
Much more than just a Bollywood version of ?Memento?, it offers a much more in depth background story which builds nicely to a revenge plot. The occasionally songs throughout the film were entertaining and fit well as do the soundtrack songs. |
|
| 3 |
Eastern Promises (2007, R)
A gangster movie with a difference, it?s subtle, non-flashy, yet it includes all the vital ingredients and perfection of a top-notch Organised Crime film. |
|
| 4 |
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007, R)
The Orphanage is a Thriller which gives some wonderfully tense moments and really made me jump on a couple of occasions. |
|
| 5 |
Boy A (2007, R)
This film left me utterly speechless. This great British Drama is shot as a devil's advoate kind of view, showing two sides to every story. |
|
| 6 |
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007, PG-13)
This non stop Action film is exciting from start to finish. This last installment of the trilogy is by far the best. A very minor disappointment for me, was not having Paddy Considine take a bigger role (but that's just pure bias on my part). |
|
| 7 |
The Number 23 (2007, R)
Despite it?s depressing tone throughout, The Number 23 develops into an impressive conspiracy, mystery, psychological Thriller. I tend to find Jim Carrey?s serious roles more entertaining and find the films he chooses and the roles he plays very intense and thought provoking. |
|
| 8 |
No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
After a fairly slow start, there emerges one of the best films of the last few years. It takes everything predictable and turns it on its head. This film (for me) is by far the best film The Coen Brothers have ever made. |
|
| 9 |
This Is England (2007, Unrated)
Shane Meadows has done it again with this semi biographical, realisticly frightening story about a gang of skinheads during Thatcher's Britain in the 80's. |
|
| 10 |
Fracture (2007, R)
In a battle of arrogance between prosecuting lawyer and defendant, mind games begin and the frustration builds. |
|
| 11 |
Hot Fuzz (2007, R)
Coated brilliently, clevery written with some hillarious scenes. Packed full of recognisable British actors/comedians, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost truly are a great comedy duo. Bill Bailey's character was a very short tole, which is a shame but the whole film was pretty well put together. |
|
| 12 |
Into the Wild (2007, R)
A film that has completely blown me away on many levels. |
|
| 13 |
Antikörper (Antibodies) (2007, Unrated)
Antibodies really exceded my expectations on many levels. Firstly as a fictional story of a serial killer, this has to be the best one since ?The Silence of the Lambs?. It was controversial, made you feel uncomfortable in parts, it was casted well, especially in the case of the serial killer. |
|
| 14 |
Ratatouille (2007, G) |
|
| 15 |
Ghosts (2007, Unrated)Nick Broomfield's documentary experience allowed this film and it's portrayal of the events of the deaths of Chinese Imigrant workers at Morecambe Bay, England. |
|
| 16 |
Kidulthood (2006, R)An impressive (almost too realistic in parts) gritty Drama. Noel Clarke wrote and Acted in this film which shows a frightening reality and insight into the teen culture of England. |
|
| 17 |
Notes on a Scandal (2006, R)
A truly amazing tale with equally amazing performances. Dame Judi Dench was a very eerie, frightening character and Cate Blanchett seems to have mastered so many accents. |
|
| 18 |
Apocalypto (2006, R)
Visually stunning, mystically enlightening. Apocalytpo is a huge accomplishment for Mel Gibson and everyone involved in the making of this film, giving us the viewers, a chance to divulge into the history of the Mayan culture. |
|
| 19 |
Deja Vu (2006, PG-13) |
|
| 20 |
Blood Diamond (2006, R) |
|
| 21 |
Babel (2006, R)
Had absolutely no idea what this film was going to be about, but with so many recommendations I had to watch it. |
|
| 22 |
The Dead Girl (2006, R)
Having not received many reviews or recommendations for this film, I thought it was sure to be a very average film and yet I was pleasantly surprised, it?s definitely my type of film. |
|
| 23 |
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006, R) |
|
| 24 |
Hostel (2006, R)
Of course the main interest in this film is how much can you stomach. In fairness a strong stomach is needed for the first viewing of this, it doesn't seem as bad on a second viewing. |
|
| 25 |
The Departed (2006, R)
A complicated web of deceipt of corruption, violence crafted with twists and turns throughout. |
|
| 26 |
Dead Man's Shoes (2006, Unrated) |
|
| 27 |
Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) (2006, Unrated) |
|
| 28 |
Tsotsi (2006, R)
A hard hitting film with an intense amount of violent behaviour and fear followed by (in complete contrast) an instinctive guide for love and survival. |
|
| 29 |
Freedomland (2006, R)
Most definitely my favourite performance by Julieanne Moore. There is more than one storyline here. Great performances also from Samuel L.Jackson and a smaller part from Edie Falco. |
|
| 30 |
Mysterious Skin (2005, NC-17)
I have complete mixed feelings about this film, the beginning made me feel pretty uncomfortable, which I?m sure was it?s aim and made the impact that was needed. |
|
| 31 |
Oldboy (2005, R) |
|
| 32 |
Stay (2005, R) |
|
| 33 |
Brokeback Mountain (2005, R)
A film that leaves you full of emotions. Not the first film to bring about the subject of Homosexuality, yet the size of publicity this film gained, both positively and negatively has probably made it the most talked about Gay Interest film. |
|
| 34 |
Kung Fu Hustle (2005, R) |
|
| 35 |
Wolf Creek (2005, R)
Probably the most tense film I've ever watched. The acting was so believable which made the situation frightening enough, but then wehn you take into account that it is based on true events, you realise what an amazing story it is. |
|
| 36 |
13 Tzameti (2005, Unrated)
Although not graphically violent in terms of blood and gore, this film reminded me of a more serious version of 'Hostel' and perhaps a little of Johnny Depps 'The |
|
| 37 |
Ong-Bak (Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior) (2005, R)
Probably the best Martial Arts film ever made. With huge fight scenes, stunning choreography and comical chase scenes. |
|
| 38 |
Sin City (2005, R) |
|
| 39 |
Hotel Rwanda (2005, PG-13)
A powerful film with powerful performances to match. An amazing tale based on a true story, a truly enlightening story of one man's love of his family and bravery to save people whilst others were being brutally murdered. |
|
| 40 |
The Machinist (2004, R)
Fascinatingly weird and utterly brilliant, a story which unravels slowly and reveals an outstanding ending. |
|
| 41 |
Suspect Zero (2004, R) |
|
| 42 |
Before the Fall (Napola) (2004, Unrated)
An intense Drama of powerful proportions. This is a film about ambition, conformity and above all, questioning beliefs. A film that cannot fail to make an impact on you. |
|
| 43 |
Crash (2004, R) |
|
| 44 |
Maria Full of Grace (2004, R)
An impressive film which shows a realistic story based around drug muelling. Great performances all around, but particularly from Catalina Sandino Moreno who played the lead character. |
|
| 45 |
The Passion of the Christ (2004, R) |
|
| 46 |
The Woodsman (2004, R)
Whilst taking on a theme that people usually unite together in hatred against, Kevin Bacon takes on the brave part in possibly his best performance of his career. |
|
| 47 |
A Bittersweet Life (Dalkomhan insaeng) (2005, Unrated)
A film for me that got bigger and better the more I watched. Lee Byung Hun is superb as the lead role and the Action in this film was very natural, from the Acting and fight scenes to the realistic shoot outs (something I?m not usually a fan of) and bloodshed, this is definitely a film I shall be watching again. |
|
| 48 |
Rory O'Shea Was Here (Inside I'm Dancing) (2005, R)
A theme that?s very rarely portrayed as natural as this film was able to, it dealt with the issue in hand in a realistic manner; whilst keeping a realistic sense of humour too, the extremities of the emotions allowed the storyline to flip in a moment?s notice, which created good Drama. |
|
| 49 |
Secuestro Express (2005, R) |
|
| 50 |
I'm Not Scared (, R) |
|
| 51 |
The Life of David Gale (2003, R) |
|
| 52 |
Aileen - Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003, R) |
|
| 53 |
Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003, R)
This film gets better for me with every watch. |
|
| 54 |
Mystic River (2003, R)
Directed by Clint Eastwood and boasting an all star cast of some of Hollywood?s most talented Actors. This is Hollywood minus the Hollywood glint, it?s down to earth, believable, with some impressive performances all around, in particular, Tim Robins, Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden. |
|
| 55 |
The Recruit (2003, PG-13) |
|
| 56 |
Gothika (2003, R)
A film that isn?t highly rated by most, but remains to be one of my favourites and most re-watched films that I own. |
|
| 57 |
21 Grams (2003, R) |
|
| 58 |
Whale Rider (2003, PG-13)
Heard good things about this film and every word of it was true. Great storyline which gives the viewer some kind of insight into the culture and tradition of the group of Maori people in a coastal village in New Zealand.. A fantastic performance from Keisha Castle-Hughes.. |
|
| 59 |
Monster (2003, R)
Charlize Theron really pulled out all the stops when playing the role of Aileen Wuornos in this film. Apart from the huge physical transformation Charlize went through to look like Aileen, she studied everything about her - mannerisms, the way she talked, how she acted toward people, this has to be one of the most researched roles and most accurate impersonations ever to have been put into a performance, something (as you can probably tell) impressed me a lot. |
|
| 60 |
Sex and Lucia (Lucía y el sexo) (2002, R)
One of the strangest storylines ever, which confuses the viewer throughout, that I think, is the beauty of this piece. There is something quite addictive about the story. This is a film that definitely benefits from multiple viewing |
|
| 61 |
Chicago (2002, PG-13)
Beautiful and stunning, sexy and sassy. A thirst for fame leads these ladies to prison to head straight for Murderers Row where they meet a clever lawyer whose spin can turn murder into showbiz. |
|
| 62 |
The Code (2002, R) |
|
| 63 |
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) (2002, R)
An original and unusual storyline and set of circumstances. There was one particular scene that was quite bizarre and I?m sure if you?ve seen it you will know immediately of which one I?m referring to, but the main plot is a much more serious and interesting story, which I felt made compelling viewing. |
|
| 64 |
Gangs of New York (2002, R)
A hugely impressive film from Martin Scorsese, everything in the movie is on such a grand level, acting, scenery, it?s epic length. |
|
| 65 |
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002, PG-13) |
|
| 66 |
Red Dragon (2002, R)
I can?t count the number of times I?ve watched this particular instalment to the series, but it?s cast alone is very impressive. Unlike the film ?Hannibal? Red Dragon is the film out of the four that is most like the original film ?The Silence of the Lambs?. With a unique way of telling the story (in terms of going backwards in order of instalments) the story unfolds and gives insight into how Dr Lecter was captured in the first place. |
|
| 67 |
Frailty (2002, R) |
|
| 68 |
Monster's Ball (2001, R) |
|
| 69 |
Snatch (2001, R)
With part of the same cast as Lock, Stock and of course appearances by Brad Pitt and Benico Del Torro, this film shares the same principles of Lock, Stock, whilst raising the stakes. Themed with unlicensed fighting, this film takes you into a part of the criminal underworld, rarely shared. The characters are again developed well and intertwine nicely and comically. |
|
| 70 |
The Devil's Backbone (Espinazo del diablo, El) (2001, R) |
|
| 71 |
Hannibal (2001, R)
Hannibal is a film which benefits from multiple viewing. When I first watched this film at the cinema at the time of it?s release (having already watched ?The Silence of the Lambs?), I?d anticipated a much more tense thriller, instead it was one of the first films to really show something gory, particular the end scene (but perhaps not to today?s standard). |
|
| 72 |
Monsters, Inc. (2001, G) |
|
| 73 |
Mulholland Drive (2001, R)
If ever there was a film that required multiple viewings it's this one! |
|
| 74 |
Requiem for a Dream (2000, R)
Requiem for a dream is a cleverly put together story, showing the lives of four drug addict, three addicted to narcotics and one to prescribed drugs. |
|
| 75 |
Love, Honour And Obey (2000, R)
Slightly corny, low budget English film and one I have watched so many times, a comedy slant on London Gangster's brought to you by an all star British cast. With music by Oasis and various comical kareoke songs, this film will have you laughing and wincing at the same time, my favourite watch over and over type of film. |
|
| 76 |
The Gift (2000, R)
This film has always been a favourite of mine, it?s a great supernatural thriller. Cate Blanchett (as always) gives a very strong performance, a likeable performance too from Giovani Ribisi. |
|
| 77 |
The Beach (2000, R)
Yet another watch for this beautiful film, a backpackers paradise and a journey of discovery not only geographically, but also from within. |
|
| 78 |
Gladiator (2000, R)
I have a strange routine with big films such as this one where I tend to wait until all the hype has died down and I can watch it without jumping on the band wagon, hence, quite unbelievable I know! This is my first viewing of this film. |
|
| 79 |
Memento (2000, R) |
|
| 80 |
Pay It Forward (2000, PG-13) |
|
| 81 |
Essex Boys (2000, R) |
|
| 82 |
Frequency (2000, PG-13) |
|
| 83 |
Chopper (2000, R) |
|
| 84 |
Amores Perros (2000, R)
Utterly brilliant! Completely worthy of all it's praise. If you like films where various stories intertwine then this is an absolute must. |
|
| 85 |
Almost Famous (2000, R)
A teen movie with a difference. Sex, drugs & Rock n Roll. Great music soundtrack, particularly the use of ?Tiny Dancer? on the tour bus, that's a great scene. Anyone with an interest in bands from this era will find this an interesting watch. |
|
| 86 |
Fight Club (1999, R)
Fincher's 'Fight Club' rightly takes it's place in popular film history as a classic must see. It had many levels and layers to it and some impressive graphic and camerwork. |
|
| 87 |
Girl, Interrupted (1999, R)
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, both at the time of the release and re-watching it now. |
|
| 88 |
The Green Mile (1999, R)
This is certainly my favourite Stephen King adaption to date. The story is so original and all characters are developed so well, whether you love them or hate them. |
|
| 89 |
Boys Don't Cry (1999, R)
This film left me utterly speechless, such an emotionally charged story based on real events. |
|
| 90 |
Stir of Echoes (1999, R) |
|
| 91 |
The Hurricane (1999, R)
The story of The Hurricane touches me everytime I watch it or read about it. A superb performance by Washington, in one of the most publicised cases of wrongful imprisionment. Twenty-one years served out of his sentance for 3 murders he never comitted along with his socalled accomplis 'John Artis'. Whilst many campaign for his innocence, known and unknown, Carter manages to keep in the right mind by not accepting the treatment of a guilty man. |
|
| 92 |
Stigmata (1999, R) |
|
| 93 |
Buffalo 66 (1998, R)
Quite slow moving at times, but a very unique and original storyline with a lot of character. I am very impressed with the performance from Vincent Gallo in this film, who incidentally Directed and wrote this too. Christina Ricci was also great in this film. |
|
| 94 |
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1999, R) |
|
| 95 |
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) (1998, PG-13)
A work of pure genious!!! |
|
| 96 |
A Perfect Murder (1998, R)
The remake of Hitchcock?s ?Dial M for Murder? and a good job of it was made. Some slight variences from the original storyline, but all the important parts were included. |
|
| 97 |
American History X (1998, R)
Re-watched this film and found it as powerful as the first time I'd watched it. This to date is definitely Edward Norton's role of a life time, he made parts cringeworthy and you just couldn't wait for him to be turned around, Edward Furlong played a fantastic part too. There was something in this movie that made it feel so real. This film isn't a promotion for violence, it's a promotion for peace. |
|
| 98 |
Donnie Brasco (1997, R) |
|
| 99 |
Dancehall Queen (1997, Unrated) |
|
| 100 |
Sling Blade (1997, R) |
|
| 101 |
The Game (1997, R) |
|
| 102 |
Jackie Brown (1997, R)
Probably the most underrated of the Tarantino movies, with great development of characters, a clever plot and as always great music. |
|
| 103 |
Sleepers (1996, R)
Just my all time favourite film, another re-watch. |
|
| 104 |
A Time to Kill (1996, R) |
|
| 105 |
L' Appartement (The Apartment) (1996, R)
I was completely blown away by this storyline. The plot travels along steadily at first and is very 2-dimensional, but soon enough, come clever flashbacks, sub-plots and intertwining relationships, which all managed to link together and yet still keeps you surprised throughout. |
|
| 106 |
Trainspotting (1996, R)
I've lost count how many times I've watched this film now. |
|
| 107 |
The Usual Suspects (1995, R) |
|
| 108 |
The Basketball Diaries (1995, R)
The Basketball diaries takes you on a journey of a drug user from the very beginning and shows the escalation into drug abuse and the crimes comitted to support the habbit. The film lures you into a false sense of security by showing the boys just as juvenile delinquents , not experiencing too many problems, then bang, they're hooked and everything changes. |
|
| 109 |
Shallow Grave (1995, R) |
|
| 110 |
Seven (Se7en) (1995, R)
The film with the best film ending ever! David Fincher?s ?Seven? is one of those films you can endlessly watch over and over and never become bored of, when I remember back to the first time of watching it, the storyline was impressive, there were many tense moments and of course it has become one of the best and most remembered Serial Killer movies ever made. Kudos to Kevin Spacey for his short, but great role as John Doe. |
|
| 111 |
Interview with the Vampire (1994, R)
Perhaps had I not had a teenage crush on Brad Pitt I may never have chosen to see this vampire film and it's proably the only vampire film I've ever watched. |
|
| 112 |
The Shawshank Redemption (1994, R)
One of the most outstanding films ever made. Brilliently written, well casted, by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. |
|
| 113 |
Pulp Fiction (1994, R) |
|
| 114 |
Léon (The Professional) (1994, R) |
|
| 115 |
Natural Born Killers (1994, NC-17)
I've watched this film countless times and I could never get bored of it. As a fan of Woody Harrelson, even I didn't expect him to pull off the character of Mickey Knox as well as he did and Juliette Lewis being cast for the part of Mallory was perfection. |
|
| 116 |
Legends of the Fall (1994, R) |
|
| 117 |
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993, PG-13) |
|
| 118 |
In the Name of the Father (1993, R)
The tragic and touching tale of the wrongly imprisioned Guilford Four, plus others, is brought to life by Director Jim Sheridan, with a first class cast, led strongly by Daniel Day-Lewis and Pete Postlewaite. |
|
| 119 |
A Bronx Tale (1993, R)
Utterly brilliant! In De Niro's directional debut, we see him taking a back seat as a supporting actor in this film as Chazz Palminteri, takes his one man stage show to the big screen. |
|
| 120 |
The Fugitive (1993, PG-13) |
|
| 121 |
Philadelphia (1993, PG-13) |
|
| 122 |
Reservoir Dogs (1992, R)
The story revolves around a robbery that you never see happen. Reservoir Dogs, a timeless piece, everytime I watch it I notice something different about it. A great cast of actors in Tarantino's debut film. I like the way Tarantino appears in his films, but only takes a small part. |
|
| 123 |
Scent of a Woman (1992, R)
I wanted to see what the fuss was about with this film, having had so many recommendations for it, admittedly I'd put it off thinking it was going to be a romance film. |
|
| 124 |
The Power of One (1992, PG-13) |
|
| 125 |
Cape Fear (1991, R)
This 1991 version of Cape Fear, has to be one of the best remakes ever, especially as the original was so good. Not Scorseses usual style of film, but DeNiro is outstanding as lead character Max Cady, a role in which DeNiro researched and built up the part to play including going to prisons to pick out tattoos. Great performances also to Juliette Lewis and Jessica Lange. |
|
| 126 |
The Silence of the Lambs (1991, R)
Certainly my favourite Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins role, this is my genre, what could be a better story than to have a Serial Killer, profile another Serial Killer? This is a film that sets a benchmark for all other Serial Killer movies. |
|
| 127 |
GoodFellas (1990, R)
One of the greatest films ever made, Ray Liotta makes his role of a lifetime appearance leading a star cast of unfaulted actors in Scorsese's masterpiece. |
|
| 128 |
My Left Foot (1989, R)
A phonominal true story brought to life by the fantastic performances of Daniel Day Lewis and Brenda Fricker. |
|
| 129 |
Rain Man (1988, R) |
|
| 130 |
The Accused (1988, R) |
|
| 131 |
Bloodsport (1988, R) |
|
| 132 |
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) (1988, R)
Firstly I have to say the young boy who played Salvatore has to be one of the most talented and adorable young Actors ever, he completely grips your attention. He is comical and a rebel in the making and had the film ended as Salvatore ages I would have been just as impressed with the film. |
|
| 133 |
The Color Purple (1985, PG-13) |
|
| 134 |
Back to the Future (1985, PG) |
|
| 135 |
Once Upon a Time in America (1984, R) |
|
| 136 |
The Outsiders (1983, PG)This film is such a nostalgic film for me, from the first time of watching as a school project in my teens, I immediately fell in love with the story. Each character has been developed well in accordance with the book and this was the best film in my opinion to have come from the Brat pack. This film tugs at your emotions and really draws you in. It's one of those that can be watched over and over and is a timeless piece. |
|
| 137 |
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982, R)
A film I have watched over and over since I was a kid and annoyingly know pretty much every word to. |
|
| 138 |
Somewhere in Time (1980, PG)
A truly beautiful film, a great tale of time travel, love and devotion. The beautiful Jane Seymour, somehow looks at home in the period costumes. |
|
| 139 |
The Shining (1980, R)
Steven King, Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson, a match made in heaven. |
|
| 140 |
The Deer Hunter (1978, R)
After a slow start ?Deerhunter? evolves into an impressive piece of cinema history, with the ability to have as strong an impact today as it did at the time of it?s release. |
|
| 141 |
Taxi Driver (1976, R)
A film of absolute brillience, I last watched this iflm in my teens when I just didn't get the greatness of it. |
|
| 142 |
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975, R)
Perfection! An absolute phenomenal film with Nicholson's finest performance to date in my opinion. |
|
| 143 |
Papillon (1973, R)
A bit drawn out, but an extremely enjoyable film. Performance by both were great, but Steve McQueen's role was pretty outstanding. For the age of this film, they dealt with some of the topics really well and the make up for Steve McQueen though his punishment, is a pretty amazing transformation. |
|
| 144 |
A Clockwork Orange (1971, R)
Probably one of the most original films ever made and certainly one of the most controversial in it?s day and still today. |
|
| 145 |
Harold and Maude (1971, PG)
A very quirky black comedy, that has an either love it or hate quality to it. |
|
| 146 |
Oliver! (1968, G)
Such a huge musical production adapted from the Charles Dickens novel, which captured the era and it?s class divide so clearly. The film also managed to show an authentic look of London during the 19th Century, made possible from a huge ensemble of people working on the set design and build. |
|
| 147 |
West Side Story (1961, Unrated) |
|
| 148 |
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) (1957, Unrated)
An incredibly clever film, not only was this low budget due to most of the film being filmed in the jury room and that's a difficult thing to achieve and pull it off, but the actual way that evidence was pulled apart and re-examined was genius and scary in that, it makes you wonder how many people have slipped through the system in this way. |
|
| 149 |
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954, G) |
|

Dial M for Murder (1954, PG)
Impressive! I enjoyed the reamking of this in 'The Perfect Murder' with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, so was intigued to watch the original. |

White Heat (1949, Unrated)
Worthy of all it?s praise, Cagney just has great presence on screen and of course the lovable rogue image suits him well. |

Rope (1948, PG)
Another great Hitchcock film! Shot mainly in one location, with what appeared to be seemless filming, the characters are well developed and the plot provides great suspense. The storyline also demonstrates a thin line between theory and practice. |

Although I enjoy lots of Thrillers and Dramas, I'm always (with a few exceptions) open to trying all genres.
