This is my favourite sort of horror film. There are no monsters, ghost or vampires. The only horror is how evil humans really are. An excellent film which statred off seemingly innocent but led to a very gruesome torture scene at the end.
Not so much a ghost story and more of a fantasy, with the film drawing many parallels with Peter Pan. The twists were so intricate that you really could never work them out and a very satisfying ending. The acting was superb In the final scene, Fernando Cayo shows so much emotion that just a shot of his face ties up everything.
It's from the Steven Jay Shneider book, it's a spin off of the 1001 Films to See Before Your Die. So I didn't choose them, but I've been meaning to watch Dr Caligari and Haxan for ages.
