1941 year in film
These are the best films of 1941, THERE ARE NONE GREATER....these lists are excerpts from an ongoing book/project on film I've been editing since 1999 titled "The Refined and Uncompromising Picture Show". Not all of these films are for everyone, but I promise if you true cinephiles sit through most of them maybe you'll take something away. These are the motion pictures that tower above all other films for the years they came out in the U.S. If any of your favorite films are missing let me know and i'll either thank you for reminding me or i'll let you know why i didn't feel i needed to mention it. Citizen Kane (1941, PG)
How the hell did Orson Welles make an expressionist poem under the old Hollywood system?......There is no disputing this film's quality and it's stature as a masterpiece. Orson Welles debut will obviously always be a contender for the title of 'greatest film ever made'. This is FILM AS FINE ART 101. If this notion is not apparent to you within the first 5 minutes of viewing "Kane", then do yourself a favor and stick to solely watching popcorn flicks for escapism. Very few American filmmakers before Welles solidified the importance of the film-author's vision the way he did. Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith are the small handful that come to mind. Orson Welles is one of the most bold and tragic figures in cinema history and "Citizen Kane" is his astonishing paradigm |
