1970's
The late 60's thru the seventies was the most creative period for American film. It is also my favorite period for American films. Unfortunatly it also saw the birth of the Hollywood blockbuster...and cinema has never been the same.

The Last Detail (1973, R)
This is an awsome film!! I savored every second of The Last Detail. Nicholson's Badass Buddusky is a freakin riot! One can definatly see this character reborn and totaly out of control in Cuckoos Nest, but B.A. is just as nuts. The role give Jack plenty of dramatic scenes but theres always that nut waiting to bust out at any given moment. Randy Quaid does an exeptional job too. As does Otis Young...who really didnt do much in film, which is a HUGE shame. |

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975, PG)
Peter Weir crafts a very moody and at times unsettling film. Picnic at Hanging Rock is a great little film. Theres alot of psychoanalytic debate to be had with it. The film never resolves any of its mystery. But thats a good thing. Sometimes a nicely wrapped ending is never the right way to go. I loved the film. The pan-flute score by Zamphire is incredible. Its fits perfectly with the incredible visuals- faces in rocks, distorted light and Phallic symbols. Well made and unfortunaly little seen by most. |

Cooley High (1975, PG)Heres one of my guilty pleasures. I love Cooley High. Maybe its because it was the inspitatiopn for one of my favorite t.v. shows growing up...Whats Happening. But really its a well made film and its take on urban youth growing up in the 60s seems pretty damn acurate? But then how the fuck would i know...i was swimming around in my dads balls at that time! |

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974, R)
Michael Cimino's first film is total gold. This is one of the better 'buddy' films ive seen. Right from their first chance encounter to the end, the chemistry is awsome between Bridges and Eastwood. Both are hilarious. And the scenes with Bridges and Kennedy had me laughing pretty hard too. There are several moments in the film of total insanity. The whack job with the caged racoon and rabbits is laugh out loud genius. The heist at the end has nail biting tension. I cant think of one bad thing about this one. It was for me a perfect movie. Waaay better than expected! And hey, its got Vic Tayback!! |
