The late 60's thru the seventies was the most creative period for American film. It is also my favorite period for American films. Unfortunatly it also saw the birth of the Hollywood blockbuster...and cinema has never been the same.

Harold and Maude
Brilliant comedy/ love story. The unlikely pairing of a 19 year old and a 79 year old woman is seriously creepy, but it totaly works here. Ruth Gordons perfomance was captivating. I fell in love with her.
5
Klute (1971,  R)
Klute

Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God)
Herzog and Kinski's masterpeice. Dreamy and unsettling. Kinski is so intense to watch. One of my all time favorite films. Geurilla filmmaking at its best. Herzog risks his life and the life of his crew to bring about this beautiful film.

The Poseidon Adventure (1972,  PG)
The Poseidon Adventure
Entertaing disaster yearn with an all star cast. It looks pretty dated and the little kid in the film should of ended up as fish food as far as iam concered but none the less its way entertaining. Hackman and Borgnine are great together. And its funny to see Leslie Neilsen as the ships Captain.
14
American Graffiti (1973,  PG)
American Graffiti

16
The Last Detail (1973,  R)
The Last Detail
This is an awsome film!! I savored every second of The Last Detail. Nicholson's Badass Buddusky is a freakin riot! One can definatly see this character reborn and totaly out of control in Cuckoos Nest, but B.A. is just as nuts. The role give Jack plenty of dramatic scenes but theres always that nut waiting to bust out at any given moment. Randy Quaid does an exeptional job too. As does Otis Young...who really didnt do much in film, which is a HUGE shame.
As much as this film had me laughing hystericaly there are plenty of moments that really had me ready to shed a tear.
"Bad-Ass" Buddusky is a really sympathetic guy and Nicholson really gives him a big heart.
17
Young Frankenstein (1974,  PG)
Young Frankenstein
Wilder basically wrote the film. And its his love for the series that shows through making this one of the greatest homages to Frankensteins Universal outings. One of my all time fav. comedies!

The Godfather, Part II
As good as the first one.
24
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975,  PG)
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Peter Weir crafts a very moody and at times unsettling film. Picnic at Hanging Rock is a great little film. Theres alot of psychoanalytic debate to be had with it. The film never resolves any of its mystery. But thats a good thing. Sometimes a nicely wrapped ending is never the right way to go. I loved the film. The pan-flute score by Zamphire is incredible. Its fits perfectly with the incredible visuals- faces in rocks, distorted light and Phallic symbols. Well made and unfortunaly little seen by most.
25
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
One of Nicholsons best films. Very powerful and moving at times. one of my all time favs.

Cooley High (1975,  PG)
Cooley High
Heres one of my guilty pleasures. I love Cooley High. Maybe its because it was the inspitatiopn for one of my favorite t.v. shows growing up...Whats Happening. But really its a well made film and its take on urban youth growing up in the 60s seems pretty damn acurate? But then how the fuck would i know...i was swimming around in my dads balls at that time!
Good performances all around and its great to see Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington as the doomed Cochise. Great little film. And funny too.

Hardcore (1979,  R)
Hardcore
Hardcore is a modern day take on John Fords The Searchers. George C Scott plays a midwestern conservative bible thumper who's teenage daughter disappears while on a church retreat. Scott hires odd ball detective Peter Boyle to find out anything on his daughters disappearence. Boyle discovers that Scotts daughter is doing porn. Scott decideds to go deep undercover in the L.A porno ring to find his missing daughter and bring her back home.
Hardcore doesnt really accomplish what it intends to be. Its a rather flawed film. The subject matter is sleazy, but the delivery is uneven. Once Scott makes contact with his daughter, the whole reason for her running away seems rather stupid in the long scheme of things. And the acting in that scene is almost embarassing. Scotts performance is suprisingly forced. At times its almost unnatural. Although he nails it when ever the scene calls for him to be angry and violent. Boyle is the real attraction here as the sleazy private detective. He sinks his teeth into his role. The score is rather annoying to the point of distracting. It is, next to Punch Drunk Love's score, the most annoying score ever.
The last 15 minutes of Hardcore are possibly the best, as Scotts character looses it and goes on a rampage after learning the men who have his daughter also make snuff films. Fearing his daughter is gonna be the next star of one.
I guess i was expecting more from Paul Schrader, the man who's responsible for penning countless masterpeices including Taxi Driver.

54
Slither (1973,  Unrated)
Slither
One of my favorite whacked out caper-comedies from the 70.s Kellerman is a freakin riot. Her line about all the foreign pubic hair at the laundry mat kills me. Slither has a wierd odd ball feel to it that only the 70's produced. Highly recommended if you can find it.
55
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974,  R)
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
Michael Cimino's first film is total gold. This is one of the better 'buddy' films ive seen. Right from their first chance encounter to the end, the chemistry is awsome between Bridges and Eastwood. Both are hilarious. And the scenes with Bridges and Kennedy had me laughing pretty hard too. There are several moments in the film of total insanity. The whack job with the caged racoon and rabbits is laugh out loud genius. The heist at the end has nail biting tension. I cant think of one bad thing about this one. It was for me a perfect movie. Waaay better than expected! And hey, its got Vic Tayback!!
