GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas
scorsese,s other masterpiece, and my 2nd fav film off all time. ray liotta stars as henry hill, a kid who grows up in queens newyork, who all his young life is dazed by the life style of the local gangsters, as they pass there time between jobs, at the local cab stand, henry is employed to work there, and is emediatly put to work, on small time jobs, here he starts a career as a gangster, and meets tommy, later played superbly by joe pesci, and of course jimy conway, played by de niro, from this point on we get henrys commentery on the life of a gangster, the money to be made, the women on the side, and the threats awaiting which is part of the life, here he meets karen, lorraine bracco, and they get married, as the 60s turn into the 70s life changes for henry as more pressure and jail terms happen, and its when he gets into the drug distribution side of things( a mafia no go area) and paulis(head of the family) dislike of the stuff, that things turn for the worse, and his life with the family is coming to a head.
what can i say, this film changed everything in terms of film watching for me, it got me into scorsese for 1 thing, got me watching films by great directors, coppola, de palma, and a lot of others, and not just knowing who spielberg was, his direction is faultless, the pacing in this film, is probely the best ive seen 2 hours 20, flys by, his music choices are superb, and fit well into the story, the use of layla(piano exit) is superb, acting is top notch, bracco, as the wife, paul srvino as paulie, and de niro all great but pesci is chilling here, a real nasty piece of work, his funny guy speech is not only the most chilling scene ive seen, but funny as well, and liotta, well im apalled he wasent even nominated for a oscar, its top 5 performances of all time for me, his charm in the beginning to drugged up at the end is great, influenced by the greats, scorsese says, and a influence to many, watch paul thomas andersons boogie nights, for pacing and plot, there so alike, and next to taxi driver a modern masterpiece, love this film, and depending what mode im in overtakes taxi driver, please watch this film

JFK (1991,  R)
JFK
best political film ever, and another masterpiece from oliver stone, one of the best edited films ever, flashbacks within flashbacks, and many different use of camera styles add to the tension, and one of trhe best cameos ever with donald sutherland, just chilling
3
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992,  R)
Glengarry Glen Ross
al pacino, jack lemmon, ed harris, alan arkin, kevin spacey, alec baldwyn, and jonathon price, what a cast list, david mamet adapts his own stage play, about real estate agents, and there atempts to be the best saleman in there office, a great twisted look, at office life, and what a salesman would do to secure a sale, all within the law, untill that is theres a brake in, and all the best leeds are stolen.as this is baed on a stage play, the acting is up front here and everyone is on top form, lemmon, for me is thew stand out, great speeches, and pacino, doing his usual shouty voice, and a great early role for spacey, who just gets shouted at all day by this great cast, and a terrific cameo by baldwyn, as the boss, giving them a ultimatum, for acting you dont get much better than this, check it out

Groundhog Day (1993,  PG)
Groundhog Day
bill murrey on top form here, reliving the same day over and over, i like the structure to this as there really isntone at least not a conventional one, just when you think its going all formula, due to the circumstances, your right at the start again, and then maybe the end, then back to the middle again, thats great, yes it all pans out in the end, but getting there is fun
5
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
enough pulp fiction is better than forest gump for best oscar, this was better than them both, and everything else that year, robbins is great, a superb twist, you wont see coming, and also a lot better than over rated green mile, again a stephen king novel, why have so many people seen green mile and not this, ill never know
6
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
david fincher is suited to this dark tale about 2 cops whose case involves a seriel killer doing the seven deadly sins as killings, pitt and freeman are a great team and the bad guy who we dont see, try not to find out who else is in this, as when this came out this was a major factor, as its inportant to 3rd act, great visuals, setting the city as a melting pot of crime, and although deaths arnt on screen, you feel every death
7
Fargo (1996,  R)
Fargo
best film from the coen brothers, william h macy stars as a car salesman up t his neck in det, who then hires steve bushimi and peter stormore to kidnapp his wife, so he will get the ransom money, but through a murder commited by bushimi, frances mcdormond as a pregnant cop, is brought into the fold, who then makes her way to macy, who car was in the possession of bushimi, like a lot of coen brother films, this has great wit, and dialogue, only the coens can do properly, as a thriller this not convincing, simply because, its one of the most funniest films around, black comedy, top of its game, i hated this when first watched it, but then realised who the coens are, and watched it as a black comedy, genius, everyone is great, macy as the guy in deep over his head, this where i discovered the guy, mcdormond as the cop, v funny, and of course bushimi, hes got this down really fine, a great setting, looks very cold, and an outcome that is typical coen, great dialgue toull be quoting all year, and in my personal top 5, please check this out
8
Boogie Nights (1997,  R)
Boogie Nights
paul thomas andersons, follow up to indie drama, hard eight, and probely my fav direcror at the moment, followed with magnolia, and got adam sandler acting in punch drunk love, his new one there will be blood, looks amazing
boogie nights sees the life of eddie torrence, played brilliantly by mark warlberg, as a wash up guy, who does favours for money in the back of the restaurant, here hes discovered by jack horner,( burt reynlds) as he notices he has a special and big talent, if you know what i mean. he invites him out to his huse where he is offered a job as a adult movie star, eddie with no real prospects, and is now homeless, jumps at the chance, here we get a glimpse inside the world ofadult movie making, we are introduced to all the people involved, john c riley as a fellow pawn star, reece fairchild, william h macy, as a cinematoghrapher, heather graeme, as pawn star rollergirl( shes always keeps her skates on) julianne more as amber waves, the best in the business, and of course phillip seymour hoffman as scotty, the lonely boom guy
we see eddies life rocket to stardom, and turned into dirk diggler, as he becomes the best at what he does, and along with jack horner, and reece fairchild, think up a concept for a film, with a actual story, hes then turned into brock landers, and agsain is a success, things turn ugly as the 70s turn into the 80s, and things like videotape and cocaine, begin to ruin the party, so we see eddie during this time, sink to a low, of prostituting, and crime to make a quick buck,
the style of this filn is so great, and in a way so many elements of goodfellas are seen here, the structure, the use of music all present, and the third act, which sees the downside, everyone is on fine form, and it was great to see anderson team up with a lot of this cast for the amazine magnolia, and a shout out to reynolds who while playing a 70s charactor, puts him back where he once was king of the box office, since boogie nights he dident capalise on its fame, unlkie say travolta and pulp fiction,
great 70s soundtrack, 70 settings, funny moments( warlberg and riley, in recording studio, is priceless, you got the touch, brilliant), and anderson on his way to genius, this is in my top 10 easy

Out of Sight (1998,  R)
Out of Sight
a great comeback for soderdberg after spending 90s in wilderness, and a partnership with clooney formed, and jenifer lopez never better, although thats not saying much, but i really predicted great things for her after seeing this, what went wrong, a great crime story from a elmore leornard novel, told in great style, casually paced, with great flashbacks helping story along, clooney, really is a great actor when he sets his mind to it,
10
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
norton is great as the narrator in finchers vision of a messed up young man, great end of the century look at society, and why we are what we are, a taxi driver for todays generation,
