best film from the coen brothers, william h macy stars as a car salesman up t his neck in det, who then hires steve bushimi and peter stormore to kidnapp his wife, so he will get the ransom money, but through a murder commited by bushimi, frances mcdormond as a pregnant cop, is brought into the fold, who then makes her way to macy, who car was in the possession of bushimi, like a lot of coen brother films, this has great wit, and dialogue, only the coens can do properly, as a thriller this not convincing, simply because, its one of the most funniest films around, black comedy, top of its game, i hated this when first watched it, but then realised who the coens are, and watched it as a black comedy, genius, everyone is great, macy as the guy in deep over his head, this where i discovered the guy, mcdormond as the cop, v funny, and of course bushimi, hes got this down really fine, a great setting, looks very cold, and an outcome that is typical coen, great dialgue toull be quoting all year, and in my personal top 5, please check this out
best brittish film ever, and certainly onec of the top film of the 90s, great look at drug use in 90s britain, a star is born in mcgregor, and a kickass britpop soundtrack, and danny boyle a master is born
paul thomas anderson( boogie nights, magnolia, punch dtunk love, there will be blood) first feature, and a solid indie film, which shows all his potential for follow up boogie nights, great use of widescreen down to earth settings, and in john c tiley a well deserved main part, he later went on to do 2 more anderdson films, and also other anderson regular phillip baker hall, as the guy to take riley ander his wing, riley stars as a down on his luck gambler, taken in by hall, he teaches him how to be a winner at gambling in reno, while not spending much. forward 3 years, they formed s full friendship, and with a new bride in gwyneth paltrow, things go wrong, and with sam jackson on scene, things go bad, anderson proves here, he can rutn his hand at anything, this certainly diferent in style and rhythem to boogie nights, although b.n did go down similer themes, but this is definatly more charactor driven, mre magnolia, theres rumours p.t fell out with film company, and this isnt vision he liked, the name he says was sydney, after baker halls charactor, and been much cut down, but whatever story, even under pressure, he puts a good film together, very tarentino jackie brown before jackie brown came out, superb debut from best director working today, i cant seem to find this on dvd in u.k, so hard to track down
gibson is great as a father testing the patience with kidnappers as his son is taken, and refuses to pay ransom, and becomes a media event, great direction from ron howard, and gibson at the top of his game,
