Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 5.0 Stars
"LOSS OF COMMUNICATION CAN MEAN ONLY ONE THING....INVASION"
.........................................................
I don't get peoples overall dismissal of the phantom menace AT ALL.

YES I'm a Star wars fan, YES i'm one of these rare breed that acknowledge all 6 movies as a complete set and don't feel the need to end the sentence "i like the star wars movies" with the, what seems compulsory "but only the 1st 3"

I DIG MENACE, IT KICKS ASS and here's why.

I think Menace shows the star wars universe when it was just about perfect in regards to the overall story. the universe was releativly at
peace and there was no issues. The jedi, though kinda diffrent to how we all saw the jedi's as children, basically they were pretty redundant and there greatness is kind of a myth rather than a fact.

Then enters the "PHANTOM MENACE" The key to taking this normal set up and turning it into a star wars movie and the whole movie becomes how his evil deeds are slowly bleeding into galaxy and how it effects it all.

Qui gonn and obi wan are great in this, the 1st time you see them do a jedi's work is still incredible. The skills with the sabre's and taking out the droids on the trade federation ship is just epic. The destroyer droids, the lightsabers, qui gonn whacking one through a door, just insanly exciting stuff!

The new worlds we get to see, the new characters, i'll admit it took me a good 20-40 minutes to actually click into being in a NEW star wars movie for after so long to being so used to only having 3, but the pace at which phantom menace moves and the amount of information to take in within the first 20-30 minutes comes at you thick and fast, but once i caught up, i adored it all.

You get maul who is just BAD ASS, he just adds a great element to the star wars universe - no angles, no back story, a mystery and pure sith. Andi will state here and now, his entrance on naboo is still probably the finest most exciting entrance in movie history! It's almost a shame he was not around in Ep3 because he would be reveling in the victory as much as Palpatine and maybe he would have broken his slience and gone with an "IN YOUR FACE" o the jedi hehe

The duel with the jedi's and maul is still one of the best. So well staged and just so much fun. There are too many moments of sheer COOL to list.

And on to jar jar. i will say now - WHAT'S PEOPLE F**KING PROBLEM- JEEEEESUS!! If jar jar character was anakin - i'd get the backlash - but he's comic relief for christ sake - and he's awesome. His dialogue is superb and he adds something to it all and i'd miss him if he was'nt there.

Also technically speaking, i'd say menace has probably the best overall soundmix out of the star wars movies too, the sheer range in effects and the use of the score really make you feel you're in the Star wars galaxy again and throw the pod race in there as well and it's all so damn impressive

Also out of all the new trilogy, phantom comes with the best memories....the entire build up from the announcement that there would be a new Star wars movie, the amazing teaser poster, through the greatest sets of trailers ever, the new characters to meet, the old ones to rediscover, right through to the ticket buying, the relief that it was all still great desite the critical attacks and the multiple viewings...it all just makes the feelig of it all so much more that most movies around.

Basically after having MENACE around since 99 i have to say the more i watch it the better it gets - i loved it then and i love it more now.

Phantom Menace is the perfect introduction to the star wars galaxy and sets up all the players ready for the saga to really start unravelling.

"IT'S LIKE WHEN TED, FROM BILL AND TED, PUTS ON THOSE MAGIC SUNGLASSES AND GOES INTO THE MATRIX"
...................................................................
Truelly original when it comes to live action movies, not so special if ANIME/MANGA is already in your blood.

The matrix hit like a nuclear bomb in '99, in a year full of already great movies, the matrix took it's very own foothold and clamed it's deserved spot in moviedom.

As an introduction to it's word the Matrix is spectacular, it has a philosophy all it's own in movie terms and that more than makes it a talking point and a geeks dream as you can discuss all the variation and themes it presents.

In my personal opinion, though great, it's not quite the defining movie that the large percentage claim it is. It is a fine action movie with some stunning visuals (ahhh i remember when bullet time WASN'T A CLICHE SFX HOKUM that did'nt turn my stomach..overdone is not the a strong enough term...enough already) and it certainly delievers the goods, but there's more than one scene that i find repetetive and the whole "stylized" look gets a tad grating, though no where near as bad as the sequels "style over content" approach.

The movie ends on such a high with Neo choosing his own path and the coolness of what he can now do, leaves you floored, and it's certainly takes a leap away from alot of the less thought out movies in it's genre...it's just a crying shame the sequels tore apart any logeviy the franchise may have had to offer in the long term.

See the best...ignore the rest!

.................................................................
What a crackin' movie based on a book that's just been done a thousands times. Disney knocked one out the park with tarzan, incredible animaton, truely great characters, including a stunning piece of voice work by lance henrikson and a great memorable phil collins soundtrack. This movie is wildly impressive to look at, it really is a masterpiece and a great example of multiple styles together making the movie memorable and original and even more than that, the story is solid. Disney should be extremly proud of this one and it will be one of there movies that they will truelly be remembered for

This movie left me breathless, mainly because of all the laughing and the inability to breathe! Matt and trey threw this movie out at exactly the right moment, south park was just peaking and it this was like a bolt of genius! South park still remains my favorite animated series out there - i think it's got better the longer it's been running and it's always guaranteed to shock you and make you laugh and it's insanly clever as well. This movie is just great - full of so many great moments and timeless lines! ABSOLUTE CLASS! ...........................................................

i had this in my DVD collection for something like two and ahalf years before watching it. I honestly don't a clue why it took me that long to get round to watching it, but now i have i gotta say i'm underwhelmed.

It's pretty well made. Spike Lee makes a good movie when he puts his mind to it, but there's something missing here. I really like how the characters are not directly related to the murders but it is literally the tales of how the pressence of this killer effected there lives. That i did like. That i found really quite refreshing. But beyond that the characters are pretty unlikable.

Leguizamo plays a totally unlikable douche. I get why his characters does what he does. But that don't mean he's likable. Same rule applies to most of the guys in "the neighbourhood".

Adrian Brody is pretty bad her as well. I sort of see what they were trying to set up, but seriously, what? it#s a really strange combination of awkward and just plain weird.

This is totally watchable, drawn out entertainment, with a great era driven soundtrack and some memorable moments. It's a perfect "catch it one night on tv" movie that would feel engrossing and great on a whim but don't stand up on repeat viewings.

WEAK AS ALL HELL!!! ...............................................................
maybe, just maybe if something had happened in this movie, it may have been a bit scary, if we'd seen anything bar a guy pissing up a basement wall, some clever twist, some sense of fear, hell...... a monkey with a white sheet over it's head swinging from tree to tree, ....anything.... BUT NO we get two hours of non likable, whinging, no real sense of danger no hopers just dicking around in the woods. WHOEVER FELL FOR THIS MOVIE IS A TOOL and who'd a thunk a feature length "you've been framed" clip could go so far!

"I do love you and you know there is something very important we need to do as soon as possible. "

OK, i used to have an issue with this movie and to a degree i still do, but on this recent re-watch i dug it.

This movie suffers from the fact that you just get it and then it falls apart. Just when you start to understand the metaphors, and the premise, it all becomes a little conventional, very fast. It's still the Kubrick we all know and Love, it's a masterful hand over a very focused idea and frankly there's no deniying it's greatness.

It's very cleverly constructed and the feeling of a man in turmoil and joining him on his journey through the many characters of his descent is very very entertaining and the final line in the movie is so perfectly handled and totally add's more weight to the proceedings, especially in the relief it brings. Clever stuff.

Cruise kinda sails through this and never really shines and Kidman comes off bad in this one. She's great, obviously, but her character is just a biiiaattccchhh and just someone you want to avoid.

I know this movie gets better the more i've watched it and will no doubt just continue that way in the future, but for now, despite having a whole new feeling of greatness for it, i can't help feeling the flaws are still tucked away in the corners and i just can't avoid them

A MASTERPIECE!

The sixth sense is a beautiful movie. It has a presense that just stays with you. M Nights 1st big hit was more than enough to make him one of the most exciting directors around.

His ability to draw you into these classic characters is so impressive. Bruce willis's subtlness in so great here and hayley joel just makes you want to protect him.

But my personal nod is for toni collet, her performance overall is perfection, but the scene at the end in the car when her son tells her what's been happening is timeless and breaks my heart every time i see it, the timing, the things not said, it's all unbelievably moving.

The end is THE "classic" twist - but even now after years of knowing the outcome, and it launching a thousand terrible wannabe knock offs, it's the movie itself that makes the whole experience great. Spooky, tense, involving, wonderfully paced and just plain incredible ...............................

Pretty much perfect! brad, ed hell even meatloaf kick ass in this movie! the dialogue is brilliant the visuals are fantastic - Fincher's doing stellar work.

The more i see it the more i love Tyler Durden. Brad is having a blast here. He's selling what the character is with glee. Countering this against Ed Norton who is firing on all cylinders and frankly you have the heart and soul of what makes this movie so damn great.

The 1st rule of fight club is not to talk about fight club....but when you've seen it - it's impossible not to! .............................................................

For me, the Iron Giant is the finest exmaple of animated movie making to date. Everything about it is incredible, the characters, the visuals, the dialogue, the message it gives and the heart it has...ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

Brad Bird created a masterpiece long before peopel got hard over the incredibles. You experience hogarts meeting with the giant as if you are there youself and the actual story arc the giant follows is just so heartwarming, which makes the last scenes all that more heart breaking.

This is a modern tale with a timeless feel and frankly it should a staple of any movie watchers diet
