This was unreal! A horror movie that actually scared me throughout! Thats damn impressive because I never get scared in movies, in fact I can't remember another movie I've ever been scared of. Everything was perfect about this one and it does come as a big surprise for me because I didn't like "The Blair Witch Project" at all which was the big innovater for the handcam films. But this is where the handcam really brings the realism to thisterrifying story. Also, I always like a movie where they don't shy away from anything and Rec certainly shows you not only everything, but everything in your face like your in the apartment building with the other characters. The acting was excellent along with everything else. I'm going to try and remember scarier films or other films that scared me, but if I can come up with nothing or very little, you bet you ass this sucka is goin up to a five star on my favorite movies of all time list. Absolutly terrifying and it gets scarier and scarier every second until the final sequence where you sweating in terror! One of the scariest films ever made!

Drag Me to Hell
EARLY REVIEW! WOW. It lives up to the hype! Not as classic as his ground breaking "Evil Dead" trilogy, but defently close. Not only was it unique, it also used the same great comedic style that "Evil Dead II" was made of, which overall made the movie funnier and more comical than scary and terrifying. However, this does dismiss the fact that it wasn't scary, it was, but it was way more focused on how it could be funny which of course worked even better for the film because that's how Sam Raimi is and how in my opinion is the best director ever. Then we have the story which is great as well. Also really different from anything he has done, yet the same great style he uses in all of his films. The cinematography was just like it is in a Raimi film: quirky, weird, unique, strange, dark, and overall different but great. Acting was good as well and you liked the characters, not as much as Ash in the "Evil Dead" movies, but good. Art direction was great as well and reflected that dark witch type style with a spice of Raimi. You also jump at many parts throughout the film, and there is some blood, but only enough within a 14A rating(pg-13 if your American). The only thing I was completely happy with was the ending. The ending is good, but unfortantly being in Film School and since I've been emursed in film for years, I knew the ending well before. However, you don't expect it to end the way it does because it's very non-Hollywood style and "abrupt" as my friend put it. It's still a good ending, but I almost feel that it didn't end and it should have continued for another twenty minutes or so to make it an even two hours and have it continue. It's hard for me to explain it because I don't want to give the ending away, but you'll probably think I'm nuts for thinking it should continue, but it would be awesome if there was one final showdown. However, if you don't see the ending coming well before, I can easily see people being blown away and shocked by the ending. Overall this is again another film that proves that Raimi is the master of film and if you don't agree with that then you can suck on it. "Drag me to Hell" is basically like jacking off and then your house catches on fire when your almost finished. It's very exhilarating, pleasureful, and overall great, but not quite a blast. Still 2009's best film so far and one not to miss!

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
One of the year's best! Simply amazing. The cinematography is so beautiful, the traditions of the vampires are kept along with new traditions that really worked for the film, the direction was masterful, carries a good story, and overall is a gory yet anincredably sweet movie. I might be sounding bold and jumping the gun a little because i havent seen this other movie but im sure this is still true: FUCK TWILIGHT! SEE THIS!

Paranormal Activity
Fucking awesome! A new and creative film to add to the horror genre. This one will be watched by many for years to come. The only thing I really didn't like was the demon face in the end which seemed pretty silly and pointless. Otherwise, this film is very good and is a must see in theatres in a packed in audience because seeing this film with only a couple people would probably be less fun, although, I imagine watching this on DVD by yourself which or with another person would be awesome as well. Don't miss this! It's honestly one of the best movie's of the year and considering that it was made for only $11,000, I'd say that's quite something. Go see this now!

The Midnight Meat Train (2008,  R)
The Midnight Meat Train
Wow, this was a really good movie and I'm really happy to see that because it seemed like all the good movies that were coming out this year were comix book movies and all the other movies are sucking out, but this is an exception from that. The Midnight Meat Train is really brutal, but overall to my surprise, it seemed a little like a tribute to Dario Argento in the way that the lighting was done, there was lots of art shown, really unique camera angles were used, and the supernatural was even featured. Not to mention that this movie really keeps you locked in with the characters which makes this a scary movie. The acting and direction was really well executed as well as everything else. Most people complain about the ending ruining the movie and how much the ending sucked, but really I think it was perfect for this movie because it shows that the guy before had done the exact same thing that our main character did and we finally reallize that the Subway Killer was actually a regular person once and when the ending takes place, we discover that its all a vicious cycle that our main character gets caught in with no excape from it. The train setting was also something I loved because in most horror movies, the characters have places to run and places to hide, but on the train, theres no where they can run or hide and I think that was also a big factor in why this movie really worked. Overall a must see movie this year! It is really graphic so don't see it if your not a fan of gore. One of the best of the year and was barley seen in theatres. Should of had a much bigger theater showing. I would have rether seen this in theatres than a lot of the other crap I've seen this year. Ohh and did I mention that that Ted Raimi makes an appearence in this movie which caught me of guard, but me being a die hard Sam Raimi fan, I was really delighted to see him in a horror flick again. GO SEE THIS NOW!

Cloverfield (2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
Surprisingly a good film. I was totally incaptured with this movie. There were many things I loved about this movie. First off, it was really cool not only to see a monster movie(Which I haven't seen in a long time) but somewhat of a realistic view towards it. It never explains the origin of the monster or how it got there and I hear a lot of complaints of how they don't explain anything about where the monster came from and they don't explain anything about the plot so your lost the whole time. My response to the second part of this is: were you even watching the movie? I mean its clear as day as to whats going on, a monster is attacking a city, they try to evacuate, the army tries to fight the monster off, and they overall try to survive. My response to the first part of this is that the whole reason they left out the origin of the monster is to make it more mysterious and mainly much scarier so you don't know what is going on just like the characters don't and therefore you are forced to relate to these characters and are thrown into the movie with them. As for the people who also said that the decisions were not realistic and a real person would have done something different, cut the horseshit, because you know you would have done the exact same things that the characters did in the movie or something like it. Now I know what your thinking," I would go towards danger to save some girl that your not even with", and that was actually one of the things that I loved about this film too! The fact that within all the chaos, terror, danger, and destruction that was in the way, he doesn't care and realizes that his brother is right and that he's incomplete without her and dispite that shes better than you and your not better than her, you both love each other and you shouldn't ruin it, so the entire movie, he tries to get to her. So basically most people don't notice, but this movie really is a love story with ascience fiction horror coading to add to the story and keep your eyes locked. The acting was fair, but what would you expect from a movie with actors weve never seen before and also this movie wasn't intended to be an oscar nominated film. Overall a great movie that shouldn't be missed, its really effective, delivers scares, great direction and effects, and has a wonderful love story that you wouldn't usually see in a movie like this. Go see it dispite what the other half are saying. Also, at the end of the credits, put on your thinking caps and try to figure out what the secret message is that is said when the credits end, if you liked this movie, youll love what it is.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006,  R)
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
This was much better than expected, mainly due to how different the perspective was on a slasher flick. Really funny, really unique, really intelligent, and really entertaining. "Behind the Mask" is a must see for every horror as well as people who hate horror because they think its too repetitive and predictable because this is a whole new perspective and because of that, this is an entirally unique horror movie.

Martyrs (2008,  R)
Martyrs
One of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen and one of the hardest to get through. But I didn't mind because of how much brillance was in the film. It's basically two stories that are connected by a character and a other details. You don't expect it to turn the way it does, but it does and you never know what to expect throughout the entire movie. Even within the first 10 minutes, something is revealed that you would never expect and this happens again and again throughout the film. I thought that was brilliant because it's something you don't see in a lot of films nowadays. Also, you really get emotionally attached to the characters and really journey with them through the film. That's why it's so hard to get through because after being emotionally attached, everything that happens feels like a sledge hammer and that's not including the gore and graphic scenes in the film. Overall, it's a gem that you should defently check out if you can stomach it. It's different, unique, smart, and graphic. It's like Hostel if it had a great story with great characters and great twists and turns to keep us guessing. It's hard to explain here and you really have to see it for yourself to get the whole idea of what this film really is. Go see it, unless you have a weak stomach.

Laid to Rest (2009,  R)
Laid to Rest
I enjoyed the hell out of this for multiple reasons. First off and most obvious point: If you have seen the trailer, you know the serial killer in the movie looks awesome and might even be the beginning of another great icon in horror. Secondly: the acting was much better than you average horror flick. Third: there were some gory yet awesome kills demonstrated. Fourth: the cinematography and editing was really well done and better than most horror films. Theres kind of a good twist at the end and the ending is pretty weak, but you don't mind a whole lot due to everything else before. Overall, this is a good horror flick thats a must see for horror fans. It' s been a while since we've seen an iconic villian and the only icons in the genre are Jason, Freddy, Pinhead, and Michael Myers, but if this icon starts to grow and sequals spawn, I welcome this new horror icon with open arms.
