2002 year in film

These are the best films of 2002, THERE ARE NONE GREATER....these lists are excerpts from an ongoing book/project on film I've been editing since 1999 titled "The Refined and Uncompromising Picture Show". Not all of these films are for everyone, but I promise if you true cinephiles sit through most of them maybe you'll take something away. These are the motion pictures that tower above all other films for the years they came out in the U.S. If any of your favorite films are missing let me know and i'll either thank you for reminding me or i'll let you know why i didn't feel i needed to mention it. I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on these lists or read your own personal film lists! You can read more about these films extensively if you copy and paste the titles @ http://www.imdb.com

A surprisingly humble and restrained work of art. This is my favorite documentary, and the best film of 2002. Claude Lanzmann's "Shoah"(1985) is the greatest documentary ever made, and Errol Morris' "Thin Blue Line"(1988) is much more significant to the craft of documentary filmmaking, but this small gem still remains my personal favorite.

One of the more interesting studies of schizophrenia on film. David Cronenberg's craft has become so prestigious in his old age, there really is nothing else quite like it.

I have sadly never seen "Unknown Pleasures" or "Ten", but i'll add them to my netflix que! I really really love Kiarostami's work, especially "Close-Up"(1990). "The Man Without a Past" and The Dardenne brother's "Le Fils" are 2003 releases in the U.S. This book started as a defiant protest against the Academy Awards, so i put films on my lists based on the year they came out in the U.S. Example: Robert Bresson's "Au Hasard Balthazar" was released in 1966 in Europe but 1970 in the U.S - So it's my #1 of 1970. Just a weird guideline i wanted to stick with. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations good sir! Can't wait to see those films
