Paul Haggis crafts a flawless ensemble piece, a beautifully constructed screenplay, with an oustanding cast to back it. Seperated from many by it's emotional power and strong social commentary. This is a rare piece of cinema, that is strikingly iconic and instantly classic.

The Squid and the Whale (2005,  R)
The Squid and the Whale
Noah Baumbach's beautiful and heartbreaking story about divorce is an oddball of a film, but one that struck a chord with me. Daniels' performance as the emotionally distant and self-righteously intelligent father is astonishingly effective, and the kids both do remarkable jobs in very difficult parts. The screenplay is so honest and open, it's so hard not to see the soul of Baumbach and enjoy the film on many different levels.

Thumbsucker (2005,  R)
4
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005,  R)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
A fabulous film noir spoof with a great sense of humour, very clever movie.
5
Match Point (2005,  R)
Match Point
Bristling with sexual energy, a top notch romantic drama.
6
The Constant Gardener (2005,  R)
The Constant Gardener
A well shot and cut thriller, and a very interesting story. The characters in the movie and how real they are is what makes it special though.
7
Cinderella Man (2005,  PG-13)
Cinderella Man
Very polished, well performed Hollywood heart warmer. The story is great, and the cast and crew do it every bit of justice it deserves. While it does feel a little cliche at times, the re-watch makes it easier to overlook. Gimmatti is a real scene stealer.
8
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
Outrageously stylish movie that oozes cool out of every pore. Definitely not for everyone, but for those who like it, like it a lot.
9
A History of Violence (2005,  R)
A History of Violence
Terrifically intense, and directed with frightening perfection by the master of the modern macabre, David Cronenberg. Watching this film is a real lesson in good filmmaking, while the story may not fly for everyone, the whole cast and crew buys into it, and the movie sweeps away the audience with a rough hand. Definitely one of the great pieces of directing in the 21st century.
10
Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
The Ang Lee-Jake Gylenhall-Heath Ledger tandem work well together, and create a strong piece about love and the forces that work against it.
11
Millions (2005,  PG)
Millions
Dany Boyle has another creative stroke in this cute British indi film.
12
North Country (2005,  R)
North Country
The forgotten North Country is a classic Hollywood tale that inspires and rouses the audience. All around good filmmaking.
13
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005,  G)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Adorable and funny start to finish, a perfect family film.
14
Capote (2005,  R)
Capote
A miraculously perfect performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. He carries on the movie on his shoulders, being aided by very few other exceptional aspects.
15
Good Night, And Good Luck (2005,  PG)
Good Night, And Good Luck
An interesting, albeit somewhat dull film, but one that was quite compelling, and featured a very absorbing performance by David Straithairn.
16
Breakfast on Pluto (2005,  R)
Breakfast on Pluto
An unusual comic fable, reminiscent of another British indi fav, Trainspotting. Breakfast on Pluto is far from perfect, often becoming confusing and without a direction. But the script is quirkly poetic, the soundtrack phenomenal, and Cillian Murphy is brave and outstanding as the Irish transvestite.
17
Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés (2005,  Unrated)
Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés
Bizarre and somewhat muddled, but startlingly original. A definite indi gem.
18
Munich (2005,  R)

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2006,  R)
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
2005 Palme D'Or winner is a good watch, especially if you like westerns. The script suffers from structure problems, but Tommy Lee Jones direction is passionate and strong.
20
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
A terrific comic book adaptation, seething with a dark and brooding atmosphere.
