Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
And another masterpiece from Tim Burton. Of course I don't think it would be quite the same without the wonderful performance from Johnny Depp. I liked that everything about the film shouted Burton but at the same time he did a few new things that he has done before. New editing techniques that worked really well and looked beautiful. Infact the whole thing was like a stunning photograph. Depp's performance was outstanding as it always is and although he has never done any singing before, I think he did an excellent job. Ok, his voice isn't amazing but I think it fitted really well with the character so it didn't matter. Helena Bonham Carter did an excellent job as Mrs Lovett. She played the character perfectly. Alan Rickman was also amazing. His performance was just right. Together they all make a really good team and this really is an award winning film.

Juno (2007,  PG-13)
Juno
I know not everyone like this film but I fell in love the first time I saw it. Back in 2007 this film surprised everyone with its subsequent Oscar nominations and the way it highlighted the careers of some really talented young actors.
I think most know the plot by now, but just in case your out of the loop. It's about a teenager who accidentally gets pregnant with her best friend. She explores her options and finally decides that she wants to put the child up for adoption. After finding what she thinks is the perfect couple, certain things begin to go wrong.
What makes this film so charming is the way in which Juno carries herself and makes these decisions. In the beginning you're shown an irresponsible teenager who had unprotected sex. But as the movie progresses, you see her grow up and have to make some very grown up decisions.
I honestly believe no one else could have played Juno better than Ellen Page. It's a rare occurrence when this happens but it's hard to imagine any other actor capturing her personality the way Page does. Juno isn't your typical teenager aside from the fact she's pregnant. It's clear she's very intelligent and she is wonderfully witty. Sometimes that can be an overwhelming trait for a character to have but Page pulls it off with just enough charisma to make the whole thing work. Her Oscar nomination was well deserved.
The chemistry between Page and Cera is also notable. They have just enough awkwardness together that makes their performance as a pair very convincing.
Although Olivia Thirlby only has a small role, she really shows her ability as an actress. With a massive personality like Juno's onscreen it would be easy for other characters to be in her shadow but Thirlby gives an unforgettable performance and her character really sticks in your mind.
Together these young actors make up another three names that are emerging from their generation. There is a lot of young talent out there at the moment, and these three and definatly ones to keep and eye on.
Personally I don't understand why anyone would hate this. If you've yet to see it you might wanna think about doing it soon. It's not a film you should wait any longer to see.

Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
Stunningly beautiful yet tragic and sad. I have not read the book but I certainly intend on doing so. Joe Wright directed this so brilliantly just like he did with Pride and Prejudice. It was just amazing to watch. I love the scene on the beach where nothing important is happening and it isn't affecting the characters in anyway but he felt compelled to put it in. You watch all of the soldiers just waiting. A real insight sequence that although irrelevant summed up with film well. The best part of the film would have to be the acting that came from Keira Knightley and James McAvoy though. The made a great pair and the casting agent did a brilliant job in choosing them because they had everything that was needed to make the film work. Just enough chemistry, the characters down to a tee and the acting ability to portray all the emotion needed. I think I may have found a new favorite film in this award-winning masterpiece.

Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
I loved it!!! Exceeded expectations. The reviews were amazing and I was expecting to enjoy it but not this. It has to be one of the best films of 2007. Michael Bay's direction was spot on in every scene. The CGI was just mind blowing. The standards are just being raise continuously. I remember when they used to look pathetic now they look real. I know that's the point but it is hard to imagine something so complex and hard to create looking so perfect. The scenes where they actually transform and all the different parts move around must have taken a lot of work to create. The performance from Shia LaBeouf was just amazing. He's turning into a really excellent actor who you can tell will be going places in the next few years. I was glad to hear that he would be in number two as well. The other performances were really good as well. I'm not usually a blockbuster kind of person. I mostly like indie films but I have to say this really was amazing.

Disturbia (2007,  PG-13)
Disturbia
I received a lot of mixed reviews about this film. Some were really good, others were saying it wasn't worth watching at all. I chose to ignore the latter and watch it anyway. And i'm glad I did. I thought it was brilliant. An exciting thriller that not only keeps you guess but teases you by confirming your suspicions then giving you lots of reasons to doubt yourself. Then telling you what you thought in the beginning was actually right. The acting was brilliant from all. Shia LaBeouf once again gives me lots of reasons to think he is going to be huge and become very well known in the next few years. Aaron Yoo was completely unknown to me but I loved his performance. His character was fun to watch and he brightened up the scenes he was in. David Morse made a brilliant mass murderer. He was just the right kind of creepy and gave you loads of reasons to doubt him but at the same time you were still thinking maybe he is just a normal guy who is a bit weird. A must see film in my opinion that is very underrated.

Once (2007,  R)
Once
Its about time someone created a contemporary romantic comedy wihtout it being full of cheese and just utterly rubbish. This film is also a breakthrough of the Irish filmmaking. I love indie films because of films like this. Some of the time you'll just get complete rubbish and other times you'll get wonderful films like this. I loved the opening sequence of him chasing the theif and the really unusual character of the theif. It set a really touching tone to the whole film that was continued throughout. I think the best thing about this film would have to be the edge of music though. It's not just purely a love story but an awesome example of unsigned artists with real talent for singing and songwriting. The songs are just beautiful and brilliantly written. That definatly gives the film an obvious uniqueness and a real reason to be seen. Performances both the actors should be very proud of with real chemistry and stunning musical talent as well which must have been a challenge to find.

Ratatouille (2007,  G)
Ratatouille
The word charming sums this film up pretty well. Pixar have yet again created another masterpiece. But the best thing about this film is the animation. It has to be some of the best ever. The characters are beautifully crafted and thoughout. But the scenery is just stunning. A Paris backdrop is straightaway beautiful but Pixar have turned it into something magical. The scenes at night are just breathtaking. The plot is simple but clever, original and funny. The character's are fun to watch and although there are no huge acting names doing the voices it makes no difference. The best animated film this year and a must see for everyone.

Across the Universe (2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
I don't know where to start. It was all brilliant. The Beatles songs were all brilliantly done. A adaptations were great and all the singing was great. I'm not sure if the actors actually sung but to be honest it doesn't matter. I'm not even a musicals fan but I think it was about time there was one that our time could put our names to. The acting was high class and there really are no complaints in that department. I have to mention Eddie Izzard as well as he really was the reason I wanted to see the film in the first place. Let's face it his character is plain weird and his scene is just like one big trip on acid and amphetimins. But in my opinion it was just pure brilliance. It's a must see film even for those who don't usually like musicals because i'm one of those people and I thought it was great.

Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Wonderful film. There are lots of critics when it comes to road trip movies but this proves that there are many out there that are actually stunning films and this would have to be in the top ten of that list. The cinematohraphy is just beautiful. Parts of this film are just like a photograph. Emile Hirsch is a fine actor that I predict will go far after making this film. I've seen a few of his films and while you can see he has talent you never really get to truely see any of it. This film however, allowed him to get his teeth into the character and show that he is very talented. He was a pleasure to watch. Excellent character development throughout and I loved his characters interaction with the people he meets on his journey and the way each of them affect him. This film also is a huge leap forward in Sean Penn's directing career because for him this is a film to be proud of. It is beautifully directed. It's quite unique in that respect as well because Penn uses a lot of flashbacks. Something like that can either go very wrong or work really well. And I feel that he pulled it off very well. There are also a lot of odd camera angles and numerous clever sequences that just add to the overall beauty of the film. My favorite sequence in the film would have to be the one at the end where is shows all of his family and all of the people he met on his journey. The scene shows the difference he made in their lives. Whether it was big or small. One shot of a man he met doing sit ups because Alex encouraged him to get fit. I don't really want to say much more because I don't want to give away the ending. Although I have to mention the line he writes in the book is just a brilliant conclusion to the film and a weird point in the character's development to have that kind of turning point. You'll have to watch it to find out what i'm talking about though. And I highly recommend you do because it's amazing.

Knocked Up (2007,  R)
Knocked Up
I really was completely blown away by this film. I cannot believe that I waited so long to watch it. I think it was odd to have two pregnancy films come out in the same year and although I thought Juno was excellent, I have to say I enjoyed this film a whole lot more. Seth Rogan was just amazing and he is definatly going to be huge. I've seen all of his films and so far this is the best by miles, I do only hope that he has not peaked in his career too soon, luckily I honestly don't believe that is the case. I'm sure there is lots more he has to offer. The rest of the cast are all brilliant. I thought Jay Baruchel was excellent and the most defined character of Ben's friends. Jonah Hill also gives an excellent performance. The plot is simple yet beyond effective. Definatly a must see film. Don't wait any longer to see it, I was expecting a brainless comedy but it really is about as far away from that as you are going to get with it still being utterly funny.

Martian Child (2007,  PG)
Martian Child
I think this film was completely overlooked in 2007 after the streak of amazing films. This has to be one of them though. Everything you would expect from a John Cusack film. Funny, cute, moments of doubt and an excellent ending. At the beginning of the film I wasn't quite sure about the whole thing but as the film gradually went on it gradually won my heart. Cusack's performance was very strong as it always is. Once again Joan Cusack is here playing his sister and the few scenes they have together are fun to watch as is always the case. The star of the film however, would have to be Bobby Coleman. Pulled of the character very convincingly with a really outstanding performance. Very good film overall that I highly recommend to everyone who has a heart because this film will most certainly touch it.

Superbad (2007,  R)
Superbad
I'm actually ashamed it has taken me this long to review this film. Back in 2007 when it first came out, there seemed to be so many other films showing in the cinema that appealed to me so much more. I felt like the last thing the world needed was another coming of age comedy. A genre that has been done so many times before, and in most cases, fairly successfully as well.
I now believe that I was totally wrong about this opinion and that this film is a whole lot more charming and intelligent than half of the fairly decent coming of age comedies out there. This is down to many different factors, but the biggest, I feel, has to be the superb script by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. Both are just breaking into mainstream cinema now and it's only a wonder why it didn't happen sooner. Rogan is such a talented guy and it really shines through in this film, where the quality of the plot and his performance is apparent. It's obvious that these two will become very big names in Hollywood over the next few years, especially if they continue to produce gold like this.
The second thing that turns this film from average to brilliant, is Michael Cera and Jonah Hill. Two very young actors who are , much like Rogan and Goldberg, still establishing themselves as actors. Hill, character name Seth, is the funnier one of the two, the more daring one who is all about having as much fun as possible. Cera on the other hand, plays Evan, the slightly more reserved character compared to his counterpart. The two make a really great pair, playing really likable characters that make it hard not be able to relate to them in one way or another.
I also cannot forget Christopher Mintz-Plasse's character Fogell, or McLovin, as he renames himself. Really strong and fun performance from him with some really excellent scenes with Seth Rogan and Bill Hader. Definatly another young actor to keep our eyes on.
It's a really sweet story despite it being very funny. You can't help but feel bad to Seth and Evan as they are forced to let go of each other as they leave for different colleges.
2007 was an excellent year for cinema, so the years list of excellent films is rather distinguished, but this is definatly up there with the best of them. If you've not caught this film already, I think it's about time you did.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Just as great as the others. I possibly like this one more because it's darker and more enjoyable by people of my age. The others have good plots and are great family films but this one is so much more developed just like the characters. It's great to see the old ones develop and to be introduced to some new characters.
15
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Bourne movies are certainly shaping up to be even better than the James Bond films. No one could play Jason Bourne better than Matt Damon either, he really is perfect for the part. I have to say that this one was slightly better than the first two as well although they are both excellent films as well. Julia Stiles did a stand up job as well with nothing to complain about. The plot is brilliant and wraps everything up quite nicely. A must see for everyone, obviously after you've seen the first two though.

300 (2007,  R)
300
It's hard to believe that this bloody and brutal film is also a beautiful piece of cinema. Some of the shots just take your breath away. Zack Snyder's used of odd camera angles and slow motion gave this film a real edge that makes it really interesting to watch. The plot is brilliant right away and with the expertese of Snyder and the wonderful performances from all the actors, the film really comes to life. Gerard Butler really is amazing. He just oozes passion all the way through it which is very important for a film like this. The supporting actors all do an excellent job as well. It's a must see film for everyone not just those of you who are into action and blood films because this film is so much more than that.

The Mist (2007,  R)
The Mist
This film actually left me with my mouth hanging open at the end. This is the best horror film i've seen in a very long time. It was recommended to me a few times but it didn't look that impressive so I never bothered seeing it. Then today I saw a very small trailer for it that looked mildly interesting so I thought i would give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did. Everything about it was very well done. The set up, the direction, the performances. All solid. But after all that, you can only worry about then ending because in films of this type, they never live up. This one, however, did more than that. Possibly one of the most shocking endings ever. I spent the whole film, wondering what they were going to do with the ending so that the film went out with a bang. Thankfully, it was the best part of the film and pushed it up from a three and a half star to a four star. There isn't a whole lot of explaining as to what The Mist is but by the end that doesn't matter. Slows down slightly in the middle of the film would have to be my only major problem with it, but I can forgive that after the stunning ending. You just won't see it coming.

Zodiac (2007,  R)
Zodiac
Brilliant film with brilliant performances. It was hard for me to choose between Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. I couldn't. Both of their performances was excellent. Mark Ruffalo was also very good. I like that even though the film is like two and a half hours long, David Fincher managed to keep you interested throughout without being bored once. It's creepy and even by the end there are questions being asked. I mean, was he actually the killer or was it someone else. Everything did seem to point towards him but they couldn't be sure so maybe he wasn't. A must see film because you need to make up your mind about what really was going on.

Rescue Dawn (2007,  PG-13)
Rescue Dawn
Really excellent film that has been overlooked just a bit too much. It had releases in 2006 and 2007 and I'm not exactly sure if it won any awards but it sure did deserve them. Christian Bale is terrific as he always is. He's made quite a few extremely good films these past few years and this one definatly falls into that category. The supporting cast was great as well. I think it was great to see Steve Zahn do something serious for a change. This proves he's capable of doing proper films and not just daft comedies. Jeremy Davies in war films always works out, he was brilliant and shouldn't be overlooked when handing out praise for this film. Definatly a film that should not be missed. There were loads of really excellent films released in 2007 and this one is just another to add to that ever growing list.

Itty Bitty Titty Committee (2007,  Unrated)
Itty Bitty Titty Committee
It sounded kind of funny so I couldn't resist seeing it.
It's about an anti-establishment group known as the CIA. They cause trouble wherever women are degraded and treated like objects. This is how the main character Anna falls in with them when she catches one of the girls defacing the cosmetic surgery where she works. They bring her round to their ways of thinking while she also begins to get involved with their leader Sadie. Trouble within the organisation starts when it is revealed that their small stunts are not heard by the young girls they are desperately trying to reach.
It's very political and although it raises some very good questions, the girls don't exactly go about it in the best way. It's kind of fun to watch the way they go about exacting revenge on the chauvinist community of America.
I did give it quite a high rating, mostly because I loved the characterisation within the film. Each of the characters are very different and through one another learn different things about themselves and who they want to be.
All the actors are brilliant and give really excellent performances. Loved seeing Daniella Sea in a substantial role as well. She's always amazing.
This film will not be for everyone. So I guess you're just going to have to find out the hard way, if it's for you.

An American Crime (2007,  R)
An American Crime
Heart breaking film that is made all the worse by the fact that the story was true. I think making a film like this one isn't an easy task to take on, as doing the story justice is a very important thing because of respect to the family and friends and anyone else connected to what happened.
The story follows two young girls who's father works in fair grounds across the state. When their father and mother go through a rough patch in their relationship, the leave the two girls with a virtually unknown woman with six other children. The deal is that the father sends the woman 20 dollars every two weeks and she will take care of his girls for two months. To begin with everything seems to be going well, the girls settle in well with the other children and make friends at school, which they are not used to due to traveling the state. When a check arrives late, the mother, Gertrude, punishes the two girls by giving them the belt. An uncomfortable scene to watch to say the least, and you think it couldn't get any worse but you'd be in for a surprise. The oldest daughter tells a lie and things begin to escalate out of control.
Gertrude is played by Catherine Keener. I've seen a few of her films but she always seems to be in the background. In this however, she does a wonderful job of playing a selfish and essentially evil, character. I would love to say that she gave the performance but I cannot. And as much as this will sound like another fan going on about how amazing she is, I have to give that title to Ellen Page. Even if I didn't like her, with this performance it is hard not to admit that the girl can really act. Playing such an emotional character with such disturbing scenes cannot have been easy and i'm sure not every actress would be up to it, but Ellen pulls it off with flying colours and i'm sure does the real victim proud. I should probably mention James Franco as well. He seemed like an odd choice because he is a highly credited actor and yet in this film he only plays a minor role with very few scenes. I suppose this demonstrates his faith in the film and wanting to be part of something this real. He does a very good job and once again shows that he is capable of capturing attention even when he has very minimal screen time.
This is a very tragic film with a plot that should not be taken lightly. There were times in this film I felt sick at what was happening. So anyone with a weak disposition be warned. Even when you are not seeing what is happening, the screams are so piercing that it doesn't matter because you know what is going on. Definatly one to see if only for respect to the poor girl that actually went through this.

Cutlass (2007,  PG)
Cutlass
I love how people are complaining about the fact that this film "is a bit short". Duh, it's a short film. And a rather good one at that.
Directed by Kate Hudson it's set in two different decades. A daughter begs her mother to buy her a rare, but rather expensive guitar. The conversation strikes memories of when she asked her father to help her buy an old red Cutlass.
It's a simple premise and is a bit like a photograph in the life of characters that we don't really get to know. It's simply a glimpse into something that connects the daughter to her mother.
Hudson does a really good job with the direction. It's very fresh and simple. I'm unaware if she has ever directed anything else but this intrigues me and i'll definatly look out for any of her other directorial work in the future.
Love Kristen Stewart. Anything she does is always done to a very high standard and you can always count on her to give a good performance.
I've only really seen Dakota Fanning's more child performances. However, she really has turned into a very capable young actress and i'll look forward to seeing her in more grown up and established roles.
There are slew of big names dotted throughout the film such as Kurt Russell and Chevy Chase.
A very good film that does a good job of show casing the talent involved. It's only 16 minutes long, so you don't have to devote a lot of your time to it, so I suggest checking it out even if you're not sure.

Fracture (2007,  R)
Fracture
I know that there are loads of films out there just like this one but to be quite honest I don't care. There may not be many original things in this film but it works and it kept me entertained for the whole two hours. I felt frustrated through most of it. Every time he got away with something just irritated me even more. Terrific acting from Anthony Hopkins. He always plays characters like this really well. For some reason though, every so often he would slip into some kind of Irish accent which is odd because he's Welsh and really shouldn't be slipping into any kind of accent. And Ryan Gosling was amazing. I've yet to watch a film of his i didn't enjoy and there are not many i've not seen. I tell you, he really is going to be huge. By the end of 2008 everyone will know his name and this film and all of his other ones proves it. I loved the ending. Finally Gosling's character get one up on him and you just see the satisfaction melt off of Hopkins' face, excellent scene.

Freedom Writers (2007,  PG-13)
Freedom Writers
Wasn't too keen on seeing this to begin with. I thought it would be some up to date, less preppy version on Dead Poet's Society. Although it was similar to that film it was still very good. This type of film can quite easily border on preachy and go overboard with the moral messages. I think this film had a nice balance.
I don't have anything against Hilary Swank but I've only properly enjoyed watching her in one film, Boys Don't Cry. I don't think she's managed to live up to that performance in any of her other films. This one wasn't much different. I think she disappoints me because she is capable of more than just an average performance, which is what we get here. There is by no means anything wrong with it, it could just be better.
All of the young actors that play the teenagers were brilliant. They all gave such heart felt and touching performances.
It was a whole lot better than I expected so if you're feeling skeptical about it as well I suggest giving it a shot. I think it's likely to surprise you.

Dedication (2007,  R)
Dedication
I wasn't sure about this film when I started watching it as Mandy Moore always seems to let herself down in a lot of the stuff she has done. And when this film first started, I thought, once again, she'd chosen a film with a dull plot. None of the characters seemed very interesting or particularly likable. And most of her first scenes, she just seemed pathetic. Much like Billy Crudup's character describes in one of their first scenes together. Luckily, as the plot began to pick up, so did the acting and the likability of the characters. Although Tom Wilkinson's character dies quite early on, I found it hard to feel bad. His character came across as a bit of an asshole at times butt at others very caring who just wanted the best for Crudup's character. Who most of the way through the film, really was an asshole. However, the director, rather skillfully, manages to convince you otherwise, and by the end of the film your left rooting for him to come through and face his fears. It was definatly Crudup that gave the best performance but I can't help but feel that was partly down to his fascinating and dysfunctional character. Moore gives a decent performance which peaks in the middle of the film and drags off towards either end. Worth checking out if you're into cute indie flicks.

Hot Fuzz (2007,  R)
Hot Fuzz
To be honest I prefered Shaun of the Dead to this. I think Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are genius' when it comes to comedy and this really is a funny film. Definatly an example of great British comedy. I loved the cast as well. Steve Coogan is a very funny guy but perhaps didn't get to show it an awful lot here. Jim Broadbent is great but i've never been a fan of his. I think because Shaun of the Dead took the piss out of a specific movie it made it a lot more funnier. This was more taking the piss out of every American Cop movie ever made. Such as the ones mentioned in the film. I suppose I was a little harsh on the rating but its still a great film.

Stardust (2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
Pleasantly surprised by this film. I was expecting a stupid kids film with no real substance with child like jokes that adults would find simple.
This really isn't the case at all. Although the jokes in the film are simple they are accessible to both children and adults. I find this usually takes great skill in writing to achieve this in a film as it tends to be the case that it sides to one or the other.
The cast in this film is quite clearly impressive with even small roles standing out among the big names. Charlie Cox has done very little when it comes to films. I would say this is probably a very good starting point for him to launch a very successful career. He does a very good job in carrying the film as one of the leading and probably one of the most important characters.
Robert DeNiro doesn't turn up until well into the film but I will forgive this due to the impact he has in those few scenes he does have. I mean if you fancy seeing DeNiro prance about in a dress, and who doesn't, then you will want to check this film out. The whole thing of him playing a gay pirate who hides who he really is from his crew is just brilliant and because DeNiro is such a distinguished actor it is quite unexpected. I almost fell of my seat laughing when he is dancing in his walk-in wardrobe.
Claire Danes' performance is slightly understated even though she plays a pivotal role. I couldn't help but feel that among the great names she failed to stand out and really grab attention when it was so desperately needed. I find it hard to dislike her so even though her performance is not up to the standard of the rest of the actors, she is forgiven.
Although Ricky Gervais only has about a total of three scenes in the movie, he performs them with such enthusiasm and conviction, that it is impossible not to mention him. His character is rather insignificant but he really is brilliant and brings the connecting scenes to life with plenty of Gervais comedy.
And even though Michelle Pfeiffer usually annoys the hell out me, i have to say she was pretty good in this film. As an old witch who regenerates so as to find the fallen star, the scenes that involve her becoming old again are really brilliantly written and acted. I have to give it to her, she did a very good job with her character.
Overall a film that shouldn't be missed or underestimated. It is packed full of comedy that people of all ages with be able to enjoy and appreciate.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007,  PG-13)
Lars and the Real Girl
Odd film that I didn't really expect to like at all. I definatly liked it more than I thought I would but not as much as a lot of other people. So this film definatly comes down to taste. I've recently become a big fan of Ryan Gosling but I felt this was a little bit of a let down after all of his amazing performances. I don't think the let down actually came down to his performance anyway. His character was very interesting and really great to watch. He did a brilliant job of playing a character that is a little deluded. The plot and whole idea of the film was just slightly too weird. I suppose I thought too much about it and worried about the people out there that are actually a lot like this character. A must see film because as far as I can tell some will love it and others will just find it odd.

Wristcutters - A Love Story (2007,  R)
Wristcutters - A Love Story
I've heard a lot about this film recently so I thought I'd better see what all the fuss was about. The title set certain impressions of the film, so I didn't really bother reading the synopsis. I was wrong about that. I thought it would be about teenagers trying to commit suicide. I thought it would just be some bad emo film. I was glad that I was wrong. No, it wasn't excellent but it wasn't your usual love story either so it's always a pleasure to watch films that have a different take on things. The inexperience of everything really comes through in this film. Although it doesn't hinder the film in anyway. It showcases the young talent in all the different fields of film making. Some of the sequences are quite striking, especially the very first one. Patrick Fugit does a really great job in the leading role and all the other characters work well together. I really can't complain about any of it. Yes, there are flaws but nothing that would bother you an awful lot. A recommended film just because it's different.

Numb (2007,  R)
Numb
The quality of this film really surprised me. It's a sweet film that really touches you. I feel this was completely down the, lets face it, excellent performance from Matthew Perry. He really surprised me. I didn't think he was capable of pulling off a role like this. There was such depth to his character and he really made the performance his own. By the end of the film it was hard to imagine the character being played by anyone else. The plot was simple and although it is classed as a romantic comedy, I really feel that that paints the wrong picture of this film. Although it does have funny moments I wouldn't call it a comedy at all. More of a psychological drama. You see Perry's character become more and more unhinged as he desperately tries to keep his life together. His performance really is what makes the film and it is definatly worth checking out purely for his performance.

Closing the Ring (2007,  R)
Closing the Ring
Very touching film that exceeded my expectations. I wasn't quite sure about Mischa Barton as I don't believe she is a very good actress at all but even she did a fairly good job. Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine were both really great, both giving powerful performances. I liked Neve Campbell's short but sweet role as well, although the differences between her accent and the other actors made me laugh a little. Sad story but I felt it just lacked something which is why I couldn't give it any more stars. I just seemed to be missing something. Still, it was worth watching, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good romance film.
36
Breach (2007,  PG-13)
Breach
A slow running film that for some reason managed to keep me entertained throughout. The ending wasn't as big as I was expecting but I suppose if you think about it in terms of it being a true story, the ending was unlikely going to be a big one anyway. The plot is rather dull and yet the film still managed to maintain that decent standard throughout. I think it was the characterisation that made this film. Chris Cooper did a really good job, playing a man that was really hard to work out. I'd like to compliment Ryan Phillippe as well but I can't. I believe just about any half decent actor could have played that role. Laura Linney make a nice addition to the cast as well. I don't think this film is for everyone. Some would find it boring so I guess you'll just have to watch it to find out if it's for you.

Because I Said So (2007,  PG-13)
Because I Said So
I usually like Mandy Moore's films so that was my reason for wanting to see this one. The cast was also pretty impressive. Cute romance film that was as I would expect it to be. Mandy Moore gave a decent performance, the best scenes coming from when she as arguing with her mother, played by Diane Keaton who did a very good job as the obsessive mother. Piper Perabo and Lauren Graham did a good job as well to make up the three sisters. Although they really don't look alike they did pull off the unconventional family reasonably well. Gabriel Macht did a really good job as well. I can't say the same for Tom Everett Scott, mainly because I don't really like him anyway, but his performance was weak and let the others in his scenes down. Overall not bad and probably one to check out if you like romance films.

Rocket Science (2007,  R)
Rocket Science
Charming indie comedy that I wish America would create more of. I wanted to see this mainly because it had Aaron Yoo in it. He didn't really have a huge part and you'd be lucky if he managed 100 words in the whole film. So I can't really comment on the performance that didn't really exist. However the film was actually not bad anyway. About a boy with a speech immpediment that does all sorts to try and overcome it. A fun watch that I would recommend to anyone who is into indie films.
39
Gray Matters (2007,  PG-13)
Gray Matters
I wasn't really expecting much from this film and I was probably right to think so. Mildly charming film that could have been so much more had Heather Graham not been cast as the lead. She's an actress that seems to choose her moments to shine. This however, wasn't one of those moments. She just came across as being stupid with no acting talent to boot. Her character didn't really have any depth which I'll put down to her being so rubbish. Tom Cavanagh brought the film up to a respectable level with his decent performance. He's a really likable actor so his character was already easy to like. Alan Cumming also made a perfect addition to the cast. He's always a pleasure to watch and never fails to deliver with his different variations of gay characters. And from this film it's clear he can just about pull off playing a straight guy as well.
The film follows Gray, played by Graham, who along with her brother falls for a woman played by Bridget Moynahan. The basic premise of the film is about Gray coming to terms with her newly discovered sexuality which before she had never questioned. There was certain aspects of the plot which were good. I won't go into detail so as not to spoil it if you decide to watch it, but it wasn't all horrible. The actors had good chemistry which was really good. There were a fair few laughs thrown in as well which made the film a whole lot more light hearted. Being anywhere near serious would have turned this film into an outright disaster.
Overall, not bad but it could have been so much better had it chosen to take itself a little more seriously and not just go half and half. Perhaps a different casting agent would have been a good idea as well and I firmly believe it would have been a lot better if Heather Graham had not been involved.

The Nines (2007,  R)
The Nines
I didn't really know much about this film before hand so I didn't really have much to expect. Once I understood what was going on I thought it was a great idea for a film and began anticipating the wonderful ending that should have been. Unfortunatly that didn't happen. There was no wonderful ending. It was decent and I suppose it concluded the film in an alright way but it was just missing the wow factor that it needed. I think I was quite harsh on this film when it came to rating it because I really believe it had a lot of potential that it didn't fullfill. Definatly worth watching once though. Don't expect a lot from it and you'll probably enjoy it a reasonable amount.

In the Land of Women (2007,  PG-13)
In the Land of Women
So this is what Meg Ryan has been doing. She did lots of films in the 90s then faded away after the scandal with Russell Crowe. It was slightly odd to see her in the role of mum when she usually plays the young lead. This film is very cheezy and extremely predictable. It doesn't have a whole lot going for it but I suppose I enjoyed it. Definatly more than a lot of other romantic comedies. The acting wasn't bad. Meg Ryan was of course the best out of the cast and Adam Brody did well up against such a strong actress. I didn't think he would be able to hold the character at the same level but he did well. I liked Olympia Dukakis' character as she reminded me a lot of my own hypocondriact grandmother and i'm sure a lot of other people could relate to having an elderly relative just like her. Ending was as predicted in every possible way but I didn't completely hate it. I don't think I would recommend this film because it says a lot of things that others do but in a slightly less effective way.
42
Wild Hogs (2007,  PG-13)
Wild Hogs
A little disappointed. It wasn't quite as funny as I was expecting it to be. Not the best comedy appearance from any of the actors which is very surprising considering how many there are. William H. Macy is probably the funniest out of the four of them. Ray Liotta should stick to his gangster movies because this one just wasn't quite right. His performance was a bit weird.
43
My Blueberry Nights (2007,  PG-13)
My Blueberry Nights
I liked the beginning and I liked the end but other than that I couldn't find any structure in it at all. The middle section of the film seemed to be thrown together without much thought with a few odd characters that didn't seem to fit in at all. I wanted to watch this film mainly because of Jude Law and Rachel Weisz. I wasn't disappointed by their performances at all. In fact the acting wasn't half bad. Jude Law did a good job considering the small amount of screentime he had and Norah Jones impressed me even though she is actually a singer. Rachel Weisz gave the best performance overall with her weird character that half way through just left. The film didn't seem to come to any conclusions. Nothing seemed to be resolved. Pointless overall if you ask me. But I suppose that would be personal opinion and you'll just have to find out by yourself.

Return to the House on Haunted Hill (2002,  R)
Return to the House on Haunted Hill
I always seem to have a soft spot for bad horror films. And the original House on the Haunted Hill is a guilty pleasure of mine. This film being the sequel to the remake of the original, which I never bothered seeing, I can't say I held much hope for it at all. But being a big fan of Andrew Lee Potts' work I wasn't likely to pass up the opportunity to see this. Even if I knew it would be bloody awful. And awful it was, but at the same time it was watchable, and the zombie/livingdead people/things weren't too bad looking. Or at least i've seen worse.
It really doesn't have a lot to do with the original Vincent Price film, in fact the only similarity I found was that it is set in a house. And the house itself looks nothing like what it should and they don't even try to pretend it's just a house. They have a lovely nice backstory to try a bulk up their plot.
We're told that it was a mental asylum many years ago and some people died, blah, blah, you get the idea. It's been done before. There is also something to do with a maltese falcon. Or maybe not quite that but some sculpture that kills people, or makes them mental. As I said, there is nothing new about this film at all. It has all been done before and they don't bring anything new to the table either so reasons for you wanting to see this really fall down to whether you're interested in any of the actors or the director.
The director has done bugger all and doesn't do a very good job and the performances, aside from Potts, are average and pushed. The whole thing screams B movie. And if you go in expecting a B movie, then maybe you might just enjoy it.
Potts is a refreshing addition to the cast and although this didn't get a wide release, or do well in any form at all, it's nice to see that he's breaking into cinema on the other side of the pond. It's funny seeing him doing an American accent but he does it very well. His character is bloody funny and Potts gives it a nice edge. Yes, I am a fan, so even if he is in shit, I'll find it impossible to hate him.
Maybe if you're a massive horror fan then this film will do it for you. But anyone else, you're not really missing out on anything spectacular or even average for that matter.

Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007,  G)
Mr. Bean's Holiday
Awful film. Compared to the first Bean film this was such a let down, and compared to the original tv series, this was a disaster. I had the tv series on VHS (still do, it must be kicking around somewhere), I used to watch it all the time and end up having laughing fits at just how funny it was. I noticed that a lot of the jokes used in this film were taken and modified slightly from the tv series. For some reason none of them were quite as funny. The plot was just stupid and a bit of a mess. As much as I love Rowan Atkinson, I was slightly disappointed in this film. I have reason to believe however, that he never really had a lot of input into either of the films, which is why I won't judge him or how funny he is on the films. I wouldn't recommend it and advise you not to make judgement about the character or Rowan as they are both capable of being very funny.

Mr. Woodcock (2007,  PG-13)
Mr. Woodcock
I didn't really expect to enjoy this film very much but I do like Seann William Scott so I had to see it. Scott was good and he did have his moments that would really make you laugh. Billy Bob Thornton was good but this wasn't exactly his best film. He was perfect for the character but I don't understand why he would want to do a stupid comedy like this. Susan Sarandon wasn't that great either. The plot was stupid and some scenes were just taken too far. Definatly not worth watching at all.

Hitman (2007,  R)
Hitman
Huge disappointment. I was expecting a decent action film and this film really did have the potential to be that but unfortunately it was just one big disaster that seemed to borrow most of the plot points from the Bourne films. Not a great thing to do when those films happen to be pretty amazing. I didn't expect a lot from it but I didn't even get that. The plot was stupid and overly simple. A child could have written it. Timothy Olyphant wasn't that great, in fact he was pretty poor. I know he is capable of a little more after seeing him in Scream 2. His last scene proves that he does have it in him, you just won't get to see it in this movie. Olga Kurylenko just pissed me off majorly. I kept asking myself what the hell she was doing in the film in the first place. She didn't have any purpose at all. The she took all her clothes of and I realised she was just a selling point for the producers. I hate when they have a shit film they put some nudity in it to make it sell. It probably worked but it was still a shit film. If you are even half interested in seeing this film, think again, go rent the Bourne films instead.

Nancy Drew (2007,  PG)
Nancy Drew
I have no clue what possessed me to watch this film. I guess I was in a funny mood and it was on tv. Usually I wouldn't complain about free films, but this was actually a disappointment. Not because I expected it to be any good but because it's a film based on a collection of books that have been on the book shelves of young teenage girls for years. I think it owed it to the books and the author, to be of a decent quality.
For a children's movie the acting wasn't bad at all. I suppose there is no reason why Emma Roberts and Max Thieriot won't have bright futures in acting, but I think they need to step away from films like this because it really doesn't showcase any talent at all, so I would hate to make any comment on their acting ability. From what i've seen from their other films they are pretty good actors. This just did them no justice what so ever.
Always found Rachael Laigh Cook intriguing so I was disappointed to see her in something like this. She is a very fine actress and this just does nothing but dent her career. She looks amazing and her performance wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great either.
The plot was a bit messy and I think they over complicated things a little too much. If you're going to do complicated, it needs to be a quality screenplay. And this just wasn't. They might have escaped better off had they simplified certain aspects of the script.
Not something I would recommend. Another disaster kid movie that I can quite see them making a horrible sequel to in the near future.

Sex and Death 101 (2007,  R)
Sex and Death 101
Very bad film. I didn't make it to the end because it was so bad. I wanted to see it because it had Winona Ryder in it. I had read the bad reviews but with her in it I didn't think it could be that bad. Turns out I was wrong. It really was that bad. The whole concept and the way the film was carried out was just shit. There really is no other word for it. The performances were pretty bad. Ryder wasn't awful but she wasn't in it enough to really give her a proper review. I thought the plot would be good but it wasn't. I got about half way through and just couldn't take any more.
