Eastern Promises
While I did not care much for the main plot of the movie, it was the character examination of Nikolai that made Eastern Promises most compelling. With that said Viggo Mortensen must be a shoe-in for a Best Actor nomination. So too Armin Mueller-Stahl, who was equally commanding as the Russian "kingpin".

The abrupt ending was a surprise as I could've watched another 30 minutes of the movie, mainly to appease some of the characters conflicts, or to at least give some content to the plot twist.

It must also be said that Cronenberg is at his best in depicting "realistic violence". His opening sequences (see A History of Violence) are just crazed, forcing you into his world. However, it is his pacing that is more of his trademark, leading (or leaving) the audiences into deliberate gaze.

Though I'd rate Cronenberg's previous (A History of Violence) as a better and more complete film, Eastern Promises let's the critics know that this filmmaker is not resting on his laurels.
