Getting all these damn HP movies mixed up
| 8 |
Loved the story, the pie scenes and above all, the characters took to my heart immediately
| 9 |
Got into the acting more than the execution of the story

Sicko
(2007, PG-13)
Left several questions unanswered for me but still thought-provoking overall.

A hot mess.

Perfectly funny for goofy moods!

Tedious.

Denzel's the man, he knows how to play it!

| 15 |
The first 20 minutes was tedious

The ethical premise didn't ring true with me but then I don't have kids, so...

I liked the interplay and developing relationship between Evans and Ben Ward. Too much shooting though. Yeah, I know it's a western.

| 18 |
Ehhhh, this would have been better served on the small screen...maybe.
| 19 |
Not as goofy as I expected. Predictable but fairly amusing for what it was.

Very Seinfeldian: funny with great voicework. The kids will even get the environmental message of the importance of bees.

I never knew at any given moment where this story would take me but it was worth the trip, contrivances aside. If you like character movies, Penelope Cruz, Pedro Almodovar or Carmen Maura, you'll enjoy.

Love these courtly romance movies! And James McAvoy is a total dish as the dashing Tom Lefroy. Favorite scene: In the Lefroys' library, the sex appeal is as restrained as an Argentine tango, with Tom coyly expressing the subtlest but sexiest of double entendres.

Disney spoofs its own fairy-tale formula and very cleverly at that. As insubstantial as cotton candy but just as sweet.

I enjoyed the ambience and scenery but didn't find the romance compelling. Florentino wasn't an interesting character until he started sleeping around. I could tell that if I had read the book I would have been disappointed in the movie

It started out promisingly but fell apart when the marquee names showed up. J-Lo overacts as usual and Martin Sheen is stuck playing a stereotypically tough newspaper editor. (Do editors still hang out at the printing press waiting for the first issue to come off???) Antonio Banderas fares better as the Mexican newspaper editor determined to publish the truth. The implied romantic history between his character and J-Lo's further muddies this movie, which is too bad because a better production would have provoked thought and inspired action.

20 minutes into it and I still was not interested in Dan or his family or his romantic predicament. Eject!
| 27 |
I was interested in this mainly to see how Rupert Grint did outside a Harry Potter movie. He did OK but the movie was a bit of a slog.
| 28 |
Emotionally complex, a wrenching story.
| 29 |
A stunning movie and story! Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada is just incandescent as young Hassan and the emotional heart of the movie.
| 30 |
Will Smith does a commendable job carrying this movie but honestly, vengeful rubbery zombies aren't my thing.

| 31 |
I found this entertaining AND intelligent. But after some thought, I realized it was pedantic and obvious. Still, props for respecting viewers' intelligence.

| 32 |
Standard coming-of-age story.

Good to see Daniel Radcliffe stretch in something not HP but he did look disconcertingly like Hitler.
| 34 |
Sharp, witty sceenplay by Aaron Sorkin? I'm there! Phillip Seymour Hoffman was wickedly funny as Gust.

The idea of getting love letters from beyond the grave got me verklempt but really this was 35 minutes too long.

Despite a couple of sappy and contrived moments, this was an intelligent movie about marriage and all its issues. Even the hubby enjoyed it, mainly because it included the fellas' perspective. Otherwise, he wouldn't have sat through this talky movie! lol

Oh, those crossword geeks! Seriously, if you enjoyed "Spellbound" this is in the same vein. Plus, if you're not a crossword geek, you get an inside look into what this world is about.

The Ex
(2007, PG-13)
Not as ha-ha funny as I expected but Jason Bateman was effective as the just-this-side-of-creepy ex-boyfriend.
| 42 |
Quiet and intense movie about redemption and surviving loss. Good character movie.
| 43 |
Just wasn't feeling the romantic chemistry here. Might have worked better if someone else played Lizzie, the romantic interest.
| 44 |
Smart, suspenseful and scary that this stuff actually happens!
| 45 |
Funny in a sweet, sad, gentle way. This so grew on me, I watched it again!

Renée Z was quite effective as Beatrix Potter, playing her as homely, optimistic and a woman of conviction.
| 47 |
I wasn't feeling the motivations behind the characters' actions. Eric Bana seemed stiff (pun probably intended) as King Henry. The women's outfits, however, were fabulous!

The animation has such density and detail that you forget it's in black and white! A compelling story with universal themes. If you enjoyed the graphic novels, you will appreciate all that Ms. Satrapi put into creating this gem.

Wholly predictable but still a light and breezy rom-com.
