Cloverfield (2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
Pure Thrill Ride. Very bad-ass across the board.
2
Rambo (Rambo IV) (2008,  R)
Rambo (Rambo IV)
Oh HELL YES !!!!
3
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008,  PG)
The Spiderwick Chronicles
This was a nice film. A bit clunky at times with performances and such, but it had a touch of magic to it and some pretty damn fun Visual FX. A mishmash of previously used ideas, here and there but in the end I was suprised that I got some pleasure from it. HAd a few good laughs with Seth Rogan's performance as Hogsquel. The kids loved it.
4
Justice League: The New Frontier (2008,  Unrated)
5
The Forbidden Kingdom (2008,  PG-13)
The Forbidden Kingdom
Color this a guilty pleasure if need be but I had a damn good time with this wanna-be Chinese Cinema flick. Sure.. it's american made, but thats not down home fight choreography. Just great, great stuff. Chan and Li are fantastic in this as well. Right or wrong.. I had a blast with my 2 boys at the theater enjoying this bad-ass chop sockey radness. Loved Jet Li as the Monkey King.
6
Diary of the Dead (2007,  R)
Diary of the Dead
Eye roll, head slap MORONIC. One of the worst Zombie films made in history. IS Romero allowed to make anything except for Zombie films anymore? PLEASE make anything but this SLOG again. Some of the worst dialouge and acting I've seen in a very long time.
7
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
The Strongest Marvel Property since Spiderman 2 and probably one of the strongest Superhero movies Ive seen in a long time. DOwny Jr. is fantastic and perfect as Tony Stark. He plays him with charm, wit and passion. Fantastic and virtually seamless CGI. It feels a little rushed sometimes and has trouble at giving you a sense of time passage, but thats a minor issue. This is a great Popcorn Summertime romp. Why don't all summer seasons start this promising. Fun stuff!!
8
Speed Racer (2008,  PG)
Speed Racer
OH HEEELLLLLLZZZ YES !!!!!!!
A lot of people are NOT gonna like this movie.. not me. I LOVED IT !!! It made me feel like I was 10 years old riding the biggest, baddest rollercoaster on planet SATURN. Strap in, relax and Enjoy the adrenaline pump. This is pure action thrill ride fun !!
9
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
It breaks my heart to say this but I really hated this sequel. I LOVE Indiana Jones, but this silly farce was boring, pointless and sadly moronic at many turns. Surviving over Huge waterfalls , fighting monkeys and CGI Ants took all the wind out of any possible joy that can be had. I could go on and on.. but I just want to ignore it all together. NEVER HAPPENED.
10
Jumper (2008,  PG-13)
Jumper
Suprise. I kinda dug this. Its all surface chase, but for that kinda thing it's done well and kept me interested. The film obviously leaves everything open so more of the holes can be filled later in sequels. Its always risky to make a part 1 of a series that may or may not get sequel status. I certainly would like those holes filled in with more info. about Jumpers and Paladins, but who knows if we will ever see that. As a single film it feels incomplete but still interesting good sci-fi.
11
Semi-Pro (2008,  R)
Semi-Pro
Good, honest laughs here. It gets the Will Ferrell pass. I enjoyed it.
12
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Didn't have the heart of the first film, but the battles were simply fantastic in this one. Liked it.. didnt love it, but was much more engrossing than I thought it would be. Tilda Swinton's brief cameo as the White Witch was fantastic. I look forward to this series continuing.
13
Vantage Point (2008,  PG-13)
Vantage Point
DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB !!!!
Goes waaaaay over the the top into sillyness when a certain agent goes... ROGUE. Head Slap stupid, eye roll dumb. This director should be kicked in the nuts for trying to be Tony Scott all the way to a rip-off Harry Gregson-Williams score. This breaks down at the script stage for trying to be an entire season of 24 in 90 minutes. B-A-D!
14
Kung Fu Panda (2008,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda
WOW!! Fantastic fun!! Loved it! So much better than most animated films. this is as close to PIXAR material as you can get. SO happy they made this without pandering to the kiddies. Jack Black is funny and Dustin Hoffman is suprising deep in his role of the Master. This is a keeper and I think will even improve with multiple viewings. Especially loved all the training sequences and the rise and fall of Tae-Lung... it reminded me of a much better fall of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. Damn.. coulda beeen. Loved hearing Jackie Chan's voice as Monkey as well.

Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland (2008,  R)
Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland
This plays much better as a bonus feature doc. to the actual Wild West Comedy Show rather than the actual show itself, which we only see in brief snippets. I appreciate the behind-the-scenes look at a 30-day tour, but the film seemed to be marketed more as a "concert film" than a Documentary following the show. Show us the actual show and I would dig this Doc. as the making of. And while I liked the featured comedians (especially Ahmed Ahmed) they were rather middle-of-the-road to me. Just not great. Justin Long's impression of Vince Vaughn in Swingers was actually the only thing that got a true genuine laugh from me throughtout the entire film.
16
Drillbit Taylor (2008,  PG-13)
Drillbit Taylor
Ya knowwww..... It just kinda lays there and doesn't do much. A few scattered laughs here and there, but sadly it just kinda adds up to nothing. The kids are fun but any story revolving around Owen Wilson just kinda falls flat. GREAT cameo by Adam Baldwin.
17
21 (2008,  PG-13)
21
Visually flashy, but extremely cliche and predictable tale of WINNING and then, of course, LOSING it all in Vegas. Very by the numbers, dot to dot, like I've seen it 5 times before. Beyond the fun the Director was having making Vegas and Blackjack look amazing, there just isn't much else to offer. I never once believed that Kate Bosworth would give The Jim Sturgees character 5 minutes of her time. I disliked her in Superman Returns as well and am just now of the opinion that I don't like her much at all. She and everyone else thinks she's prettier than she actually is.
18
The Happening (2008,  R)
The Happening
Absolutely over the top DUMB. I really HTAED this waste of time disaster joke. TREES can talk to the bushes can talk to the grass?? WTF? I guess if you BELIEVE that plants can think, communicate, plan and then release toxins then maybe you can buy into this silly idea, but not me. In the past I have supported M. Night when all others were kicking his ass. I really backed LADY IN THE WATER, but I just cannot spin this tale of stupid. Maybe it's just me, but I just couldnt buy into this in anyway. It only took about 5 minutes and I was completely BORED. Its 90 minute run time felt like an eternity and was a complete chore to get through. WTF was going on in M. Night's head? He is so far above this, so I thought. It's not even worth a curious look. Just a sad waste of time. Mark Walberg is just terrible in his role as a mousey High School Science Teacher. The whole movie felt mis-cast. Don't even get me started on the Hot Dog loving guy with all the planet theories. HEAD SLAP Moronic.
19
The Incredible Hulk (2008,  PG-13)
The Incredible Hulk
Suprise! Suprise! I actually really liked this a lot. Ed Norton was great (as he usually is). I enjoyed the supporting cast as well, even Liv Tyler. While some of the CGI isn't out and out belivable I was eventually able to enjoy the film for what is was. This felt much more like the Hulk I grew up with than the Ang Lee film, which I also liked, but I think works better with this film. Loved the homages back to the TV series, especially hearing the theme. Count another one for Marvel. Great Job.
20
Batman Gotham Knight (2008,  Unrated)
21
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
OUTSTANDING!! - I will discuss this in much greater detail on a Hollywood Saloon Specoial Edition dedicated completely to THE DARK KNIGHT.
22
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008,  R)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Nothing profound here, but I had a few really huge laughs. A great "see it with your Wife/Girlfriend" type of flick. Russell Brand is outstanding and someone to watch in the future. Paul Rudd, once again, scores with a fantastic cameo/supporting role. Mila Kunis = gorgeous! I had a great time with this one.
23
Doomsday (2008,  R)
Doomsday
At what point does homage become rip-off? How many sub-genre's can a single film cross and still be taken seriously? Sadly, this film feels like a moronic blast to the head as regurgitates Escape From New York and The Road Warrior.. of course mixing a little Excalibur/Gladiator doesnt hurt either right? Urghh.. I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes. The film's only saving grace is Rhona Mitra who I am totally convinced could play a female James Bond if anyone had the balls to attempt it. I've loved her since her days on THE PRACTICE/BOSTON LEGAL. She deserves better than this farce. If our future is that we are going to pick the dead bones of other films and claim it's homage than we are headed for dark days as film fans. I hope this isn't a trend. I can't image John Carpenter enjoys this retarded do-over of his work as well.
24
Wanted (2008,  R)
Wanted
How about a big ol' bag of "HELL FUCKING YES". This is EXACTLY what I expected from Timur Bekmambetov (The NIGHT-WATCH films). I crown him the new big official action BAD-ASS on the planet. Fuck all the dirty scabs like Ratner, Bay and their moronic little clones. Lets let the guys who have the juice and the balls to bring the HARDCORE back into action movies through the gates. It takes someone OUTSIDE of the brain-dead coffins of Hollywood to do something right. Sure, this movie is over-the-top, but I knew that going in. Its done icreativily and with intelligent film grammer that isn't happy with just recycling ripped off John Woo cliches. Yea, I don't buy that a bullet can be curved around a room, do a full 360 going through about 6 skulls either... but it sure played cool within it's own microcosm of "Super-Assasins". So just say YES to this return to style even if it comes from the other side of the world.
25
Redbelt (2008,  R)
Redbelt
I think I liked this film.. Hmmm.. weird feeling after watching it. Maybe thats a good thing. Chitwetel Ejiofor, again, is awesome. I was pretty engrossed in it up until the last few minutes which felt a little unbelievable and corny. The jury is still out for me. I did, however, enjoy it as a character sketch of a guy who tried to stand for something even though the entire world either sells him out or steals from him. Interesting to see David Mamet attack this material. Probably worth the view, even though the ending feels awkward.
26
Baby Mama (2008,  PG-13)
Baby Mama
YA know.. a couple of laughs here and there. No big deal. This is a cute date movie or CHICKS in general. BLUGH! Skip it.
27
Death Race (2008,  R)
Death Race
This flick is the retarded and disfigured love child between Michael Bay and Michael Bay's inbreed 2nd cousin who has 2 teeth and a steel plate in his head. Ridiculous and moronic in everyway a film could possibly be. Paul WS is officially back on the PURE SUCK list.
28
The Foot Fist Way (2006,  R)
The Foot Fist Way
OUSTANDING!!! Absolutely Hillarious. Danny McBride is a raging bad-ass. His Fred Simmons Tae-Kwon-Do Master is King of the Losers but he has the heart to battle against his failing life. Betrayed by his Wife and the "Hero of his Life", in the end he proves he is the Champion that he always reminds you that he is. LOVED IT !!
29
WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
As expected Pixar triumphs yet again with a wonderful addition to their perfect library. There is alot being said underneath this film about how we live and things we must do if we have any hope for a future. Some have taken offense to this in-your-face scolding of the "American Lifestyle", but I think the message is strong and sound and needs a little bit of telling. Andrew Stanton again shows that he, Brad Bird and John Lassiter and the 3 Musketeers of animation. Beautiful thomas Newman score, as usual. Very nice, sweet and vital film.
30
Burn After Reading (2008,  R)
Burn After Reading
well... at least Brad Pitt was funny (Dont you want your Sensitive.. Shit). Beyond that I found this to be an incredibly pointless waste of time. Sure it was an excercise in style for the Coens to make a throw away movie (mirroring the worthless contents of the CD) but that doesn't make it anymore interesting for the viewer. So, while I respect the attempt I found it a chore to get through.
31
The Signal (2008,  R)
The Signal
WOW!! This is a unique, fresh and brave sci-fi/horror flick. It was like a zombie apocalypse but through the eyes of the zombies almost...fighting for their humanity, clinging to what , if anything, makes any sense. Considering the budget I am VERY impressed for what they pulled off. LOVED the 3 stories and the disjointed time line. You have to have some brains to get this one and thank God for that... for a damn change.
32
City of Ember (2008,  PG)
City of Ember
This film is ripe with possibility but sadly misses the mark. A huge setting of a dystopic post-apocalyptic world it falls flat at really creating any scale in it's vision. There is a great possible "mythology" about the "Builders" thats just gets squandered. There MUST be a larger version of this film. Clocking in at around 90 minutes it feels like there is so much more we are not seeing that explains in greater detail the story. Its too bad really, because the basic premise is very interesting.
33
Henry Poole Is Here (2008,  PG)
Henry Poole Is Here
Really, really loved this film. It will no doubt be one of my favorites of 2008. Sad that it got so little attention.
34
Desu nôto 2 (Death Note: The Last Name) (2008,  Unrated)
Desu nôto 2 (Death Note: The Last Name)
Another great example of why I am loving foreign film these days to a great extent almost more than the typical Hollywood fare. This continuation of the Death Note story is simply fantastic on all levels. I battle of wits between Light and L is the highlight and reminds me of Sherlock Holmes vs. Moriarty. By all means watch this film franchise and enjoy it before Hollywood gets it's grubby hands on it and wipes it of all it's glory. Great, Great stuff.
35
Tropic Thunder (2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
I had heard such great things about this but in the end I was kind of dissapointed. Beyond a few laughs I thought the movie was pretty ridiculous. I enjoyed Robert Downey Jr.s performance, but just hated every single second that Ben Stiller was on screen. The ending with the TIVO saving them from a missile was completely moronic and ridiculous.
36
Step Brothers (2008,  R)
Step Brothers
In typical Will Ferrell fashion we have yet another really dumb and obnoxious movie that I laughed all the way through. I mean it is really, like Ive said in the past, a whole new genre of film. Bad movies, good laughs. Laughs don't equate to a good film, but it feels nice to have a few chuckles from time to time. It's sketch comedy stretched to 90 minutes. A chore to get through but ultimately somewhat enjoyable if you like Will Ferrell and John C. Reily's type of schtick.
37
Quantum of Solace (2008,  PG-13)
Quantum of Solace
QoS is the first true SEQUEL in the Bond film series. Yes, there are obvious films that overlap with repeat characters (non-regulars) but this is the first DIRECT sequel. It's really a continuation of CR from frame 1. I guess I'm OK with that, but as it's a NEW thing it takes a moment to get used to.

Immediately I knew something was wrong when we didnt have our official "BOND" BULLET SHOT. YES, we didnt get it in CR either at the very beginning, but once we witnessed BOND commit his first "kill" the shot was pulled out of that story context and made sense...so with that I figured that QoS would the "first" Bond film (from the Craig Re-Boot) to open with the official, traditional BOND in the gun sites bullet shot. ... Well it wasn't there... instead it was at the end. HORSE SHIT!!! I didnt like it. Tradition is a beautiful thing so why f**k with it? They were able to bring MORE to it in, and give it more meaning in CR, but here it's just an after thought pushed back to the end credits. WRONG!! I hated that.
SPIN: Now, you could maybe spin it this way. Were they waiting to show it at the end while this one big VESPER arc (CR and QoS) was wrapped up BEFORE he earns his MI6/007 status to actually get his "BULLET" open? Well maybe... I mean CR and QoS are essentially one long story.
In reality though I dont buy that and I give the filmmakers and whoever made that decision to piss on tradition an EPIC f**k YOU for screwing the shit up.

Moving on.

I did NOT like Danny Kleinman's latest efforts creating the title sequence...I missed the credit sequence (just wasnt looking at the names) and I wondered if Kleinman had even done them. MAybe it's just my opinion but I just found the sequence kind of lame...but then again I felt liek the Bolivian Dessert wasn't any interesting location in anyway so it wasn't very interesting in the title sequence as well.

The Song....whatever. I like the "hook" but the rest licks balls. Jack White and Alicia Keyes? The sounded like they were trying to out SHOUT each other. Enough solo artists (duet here). Lets get a group to do the next song. JEEZUS.

BLAM!!.. CAR CHASE...
umm yea... NOT INTERESTED in your DAMN "PAUL GREENGRASS" impression Mr. Forster. Why does BOND need to be influenced by BOURNE ? f**k BOURNE... yes, I said it.. f**k Jason Bourne.. James Bond is LEGEND.. Bourne is a FAD that burned itself out after 2 movies (the 3rd was just a duplicate of 2), but here we need to try and completely bite that hideous shakey-cam style? During the opening sequence I was loving me some MARTIN CAMPBELL. Thanking him for CR.. thanking him for locking down his damn camera and making it classy... but here we are back to jerking off with one camera and screaming LOOK. LOOK. LOOK at my nifty shaking relaistic action sequences. Im am OFFICIALLY calling this shakey shit DONE now. Its over. Its tired. Its MORONIC. Even Michael"f**k" Bay is smarter than to shake his shit up like this. To me, just about every single action sequence in this film is worthless. YES< there are occasional beauty shots in there.. but the shakey, combined with an ABSURDIST editng pace made me want to throw monkey shit at the screen. Who the f**k do these people think we are? I had to shake my head a few times as I litterally got dizzy. Its NOT stylistic.. its SHIT.

At the beginning we basically get zero to none exposition. Its just action scene..breath..action scene..breath..action scene... AND sadly.. the first 3 f**k chases in no way compared to the mega-brilliance that was the PArkour laced sequence created in CR. Again.. MARTIN CAMPBELL.. we loooovvee you....
about the ONLY action sequence I liked was the cross-cutting between the musical drama and Bond getting pics of the "Quantum" members/chase sequence.

Finally things slow down and we start to see things coming together.

DAME Judi Dench was great as always as M.. but where the hell were those MI6 headquarters? Bolivia? London? Bond was here then there and everywhere. I kind of lost my sense of location in the film. We even ahd to go to the dessert.. leave.. and then come back again? Was is this.. PHANTOM MENACE.. lets go to Coruscant.. no lets go to Naboo.. back to Coruscant.., wait back to Naboo.. WESA GOING HOME !!! Well.. where the f**k is home?

Bond girls... Well the Red-headed babe.. MEOW.. Smokin HOTTT. Glad to see that Bond wasn't so tied up in his grief that he couldnt blast that. Had he not it would have been VERY Un-Bond of him.

The main Chick in this film was just a passenger. Really pointless to the story. Sure, she helped Bond catch a lead on the whole thing but her continued plot in the story was worthless. I think maybe the writers wanted to create a complement character to Bond (with their REVENGE fantasies) but they never really connected, and definately had no chemistry. AND I never bought her fire and passion to kill the General/soon to be Dictator as well. She was eye candy. What Bond cant do the deal alone? Gimme a break..but Bond usually has a lady in tow so, the tradition continues.. just make her more nessesary next time Id say.

Repeat Characters/Regulars: As I said Judi Dench, as always performed her part well. I loved that face to face with Bond after he John McClained everyone in the elevator. She ultimately trusts Bond.

Felix Lighter - SANCHEZ !!.. err no. Jeffrey Wright is great. loved him again here, although his part was even less than in CR. We NEED to see this guy kick some ass soon. Lets just hope he's not replaced by Don Cheadle in Craig Bond 3.

THE JAR-JAR MOMENT:
OK.. lets call it like it is. WHO THE f**k THOUGHT A HYDROGEN BASED f**k HOTEL IN THE DESSERT WAS A GOOD IDEA?????
If all it takes for your hotel to completely BLOW UP and burn down is one truck backing into it... then MAN do you have problems.
In no way was this stupid shit, set up, elluded too or referenced until about 4 minutes before shit started blowing up. And WHY the hell was that hotel in the middle of nowhere?? Was this the NEW VEGAS in bolvia that was going to be built? Was HYDROGEN HOTEL the Flamingo? Maybe I missed something here.. but this was like VIEW TO A KILL Stupid. YES.. things blow up GOOD.. BOOM.. they just blow so DUMB.

MUSIC SCORE: David Arnold is back again but with a mostly invisdible score. I sure miss the old John Barry days when you were allowed to create an actually THEME. Background music is what this was...thats all. I liked the occasional musical referances to VESPER (themes from CR) but other than that it was just noise.

SUMMATION:
I did not hate this film. I actually LIKED IT. I have alot of complaints though and I wish things had been done differently. Craig was fine.. but I felt like I didnt get enough of him. Gone were the quiet moments. The talks Bond had on the train with Vesper...I mean I dont think he has 2 minutes with anyone. I missed Bond in this film. I missed little referances to the canon of Bond films, or "origin" moments. Theres no "shaken not stirred".. theres no "Bond James Bond". I mean this thing is total OFF on its own. Thats fine if the film is trying to make itself an indivdual film.. they all MUST stand alone.. but this intentional avoidance of all things BOND is off putting to hard-core fans. I did like the drowned in oil chick (the poor HOT red head) and its obvious referance to GOLDFINGER. I guess I just wanted some more direct referances. Just light little touches.. nothing major.
SO.. I didnt hate it.. I liked it.. blah blah...

CASINO ROYALE was BAD ASS. Plain and simple. ANYTHING they did was going to be hard to pull off with CR being so good. I dont think this effort was a waste. In baseball terms Id call it a standup double...but definately NOT a triple. CR was a home run all the way, with runners on..But QoS just felt like a very close to empty gas tank. I probably will point my fat finger at Mark Forster here. I have enjoyed his past films but he in no way exudes the McTiernan juice that was coursing through Martin Campbell's veins during CR. Not even close. It smelt of WANNABE. and the film smelt of LICENSE TO KILL. (just not as dumb) The film is a scuffed and tarnished Silver medal. better than Bronze but nowhere near a polished Gold.

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008,  PG)
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
While enjoy and agree with the majority of the content of this Doc., it still uses various theatrical manipulations to acheive it's desired response. Great points across the board especially in exposing some of these idiots who claim there is no room for even the mention of "Intelligent Design"..even though they welcome the idea that an "Alien" society might have seeded humans on Earth. You don't have to believe in a God/Creator but logic dictates the possibbility to enough of an extent that it is worthy of continued investigation.
39
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008,  R)
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
This was a grerat comedy in that same ol' Kevin Smith vein. Really enjoyed the humor and the set up to the making of the porny. GREAT seeing Traci Lords in this. She still looks great. Jason Mewes plays the 2nd Cousin to Jay in a funny role. Seth Rogen is on again. Overall this is MUCH fun.
40
Pineapple Express (2008,  R)
Pineapple Express
A dumb story mixed with some very funny characters. James Franco, Seth Rogen and especially my new favorite comedian Danny McBride all do great work here. The sad truth is that this story is a worthless/moronic action flick that is so over the top that it just becomes dumb. Just seeing these guys in their element was the good stuff. When it turns into a action flicks it falls apart. Some great laughs, but overall the film itself is a stinker that was a chore to get through.
41
Bolt (2008,  PG)
Bolt
Absolutely Wonderful. As good as a PIXAR film. John Lassister's involvement doesn't shock me in the least. The 3D was fantastic as well.
42
The House Bunny (2008,  PG-13)
The House Bunny
This is your same old typical cliched chick flick that you've seen 30 times before.. BUT Anna Farris, in a fantastic comedic performance, made this much better than it could have been. This movie should really catapult her to many more comedic roles. and she's gorgeous as well. Great to see HEF as well.
43
Ghost Town (2008,  PG-13)
Ghost Town
A nice, quiet little romantic comedy that while sweet is ultimately forgettable. TO me it mirror's "GHOST" (Patrick Swayze) a little too closley as to feel like its a remake/rip-off. This has all been done before, just not with Ricky Gervais who is always likable. I give it a big MEH (not good/not bad).. just kinda there.
44
Make It Happen (2008,  PG-13)
Make It Happen
In the "follow your dreams" Dance movie genre this one isn't hideous... just predictable, cliche and "chick-flickey", but then again why did I even bother watching this knowing what I was gonna get. I have a secret crush on the dangerously cute (and Hot) Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who played Lucy McClaine in "Live Free or Die HArd"). She's a knockout and a damn decent dancer as well. This film, in itself, is a snore. It should have really popped with high energy editing and tight choreograpy, but instead it was mediocre in both departments. BUT for a flick made for 15 year old girls it could have been much worse im sure. Its a low rent version of FLASHDANCE but with the bent being that it highlights "Burlesque" dancing. SILLY. Just gimme more MARY E. in tighter outfits for the direct-to-dvd sequel please.
45
Valkyrie (2008,  PG-13)
Valkyrie
This film was pretty damn fantastic all around. The CRUISE factor didnt bother me and I thought he did a pretty excellent job. The scenes where he is standing directly next to Hitler are very powerful. You could feel the fear and tension that everyone felt just being in DER FUHRER's presence. This is GREAT for WWII history buffs as you get a view into German resistence that is most often not taught. Bryan Singer has redemmed himself for his luke-warm job on SUPERMAN RETURNS. Very tense, strong war film told on a smaller scale. Fantastic acting across the board.
46
Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
Clint is fantastic in this. His mean old crumudgin with the heart of gold for what is right is great. Some of his one-liners are golden Zingers that sting with every whisp of his gravely tough guy voice. Sadly, the film itself is yet another spin on a tired tale of tutoring the young geek to manhood. Suprisingly some of the acting was weak and unbelievable from the Asian family that interacted with Eastwood. They were likable but never belivable and came off as very amateurish. This is a great character sketch but an old story thats stale. But if ya love Eastwood, like I do, it's worth your time.
47
Body of Lies (2008,  R)
Body of Lies
A very engrossing story that I got completely lost in (in a good way). Fantastic Ridley Scott directing and sharp acting on both Leo and Russell Crow's part. A very nice film all around.
48
JCVD (Van Dammage) (2008,  R)
JCVD (Van Dammage)
WHO KNEW?? The man can actually act. This movie is simply OUTSTANDING. fantastic work by Director Mabrouk El Mechri proving again that most great films are made outside of ther Hollywood system these days. A little over half way in Van Damme has a conversation with God and it is simply astonishing. Very heartfelt, passionate and moving.
49
Frost/Nixon (2008,  R)
Frost/Nixon
Fascinating subject matter and an amazing performance from Frank Langella. If anything this film created sympathey for Nixon, which I appreciated. Something felt awkward and I hated Sam Rockwell's character. Michael Sheen, in my opinion, always looked like a deer caught in the headlights, which felt strange. I think this is a great film for history, but it has an obvious liberal bias. If anything the film made me want to investigate the actual interviews and see the real Nixon and how he handled the same event. I mean WHY watch this film as opposed to watching the actual interview? That is an interesting topic for thought.
50
Religulous (2008,  R)
Religulous
I fiercly and passionately HATED this film. I violently disagree with its content. Im not even going to attempt to write the disagreements I have with this here as it would just be too much. Eventually I will have to record something on it. Maher is so incredibly OFF on understanding the Bible and correct Biblical interpretation, yet dictates Christian Doctrine to followers of the Faith as HE is the final word. AND if your gonna attack the faith why go to the bastion of Biblical study, like a TRUCK STOP CHURCH, to get your answers? This film is a manipulative farce WORSE than any attack mess that Michael Moore has ever made.
51
Eagle Eye (2008,  PG-13)
Eagle Eye
This movie is soooooo ridiculous. I cant even count all the ways. This is the retarded step cousin to LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD except with worse actors and things that are even more over the top, unbelivable and just plan moronic. I swear I cracked up almost every second that Rosario Dawson was on screen as a what... Air Force Investagator? One of her worst roles ever. Billy Bob should be embarrassed of his role.. I hope he made some cash becasue he also was laughable in his cliche grizzeled Cop role. SOME DUMB, SO BAD, DIE HOLLYWOOD DIE.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Definately enjoyed this film. Its a cultural journey through india, the likes of which most Stateside folk have never seen or can hardly even imagine. Sure, its a bit of a fairytale, but that makes you leave with a big fat grin on your face. Enjoyed the score/music as well. I don't know that Id call it a masterpiece, but it was charming, heartfelt and moving. It only lacked REGIS !!

The Rocker (2008,  PG-13)
The Rocker
Forgettable but still fun flick about a drummer who doesnt want to grow up. Rainn Wilson is a lot of fun here. Very different from Dwight Shrute. I also enjoyed Emma Stone (who was great in THE HOUSE BUNNY) and Jason Sudeikis (SNL). The way the music biz is represted is totally ridiculous and unbelievable, but in this flick it really doesnt matter much. Get a few giggles and then forget about it.

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
What if Stanley Kubrick had made a Vampire Film? It might have possibly looked something like this. It definately had echos (at least stylistically) of THE SHINNING. Not to take anything away from Tomas Alfredson though, who here creates one of the most simple yet deep and rich "Horror" films ever made. Astonishing is about the only word I can use to describe this near masterpiece. This film is all about enviroment. You can almost feel the cold and snowy setting of this Swedish City pour through the screen. Sound is a MAJOR element to this film as we seem to hear every little breath from the characters. Theres is SOOO Much to discuss in this. Simple fantastic with and ending that will BLOW YOUR FREAKING MIND. Brilliant and haunting work.

Man on Wire (2008,  PG-13)
Man on Wire
This is a fascinating tale on a dumb stunt. Sure its an amazing feat of daring and courage, but really... is it something worth possibly losing your life over? I doubt this film would have been made and Phillippe Petit would have ever been heralded had he fallen to his death. The film itself is a great re-counting of the trials that it took to pull this feat off with lots of photos and film footage. Sadly, Petit himself comes off as an impassioned "artist" who has a great dream... but also very selfish, egotistical and reckless.

The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
This film is all about Mickey Rourke's performance, although it is quite "Rocky Balboa". Nice work all around in a very heartfelt performance. I also loved Marisa Tomei's character who, as an older stripper working to survive is the perfect compliment character to Rourke's has-been Wrestler, Randy. She, pretty damn bravely, performs as an honest, true to God stripper, titties open for all to see. In the end the message here is to be true to who you are, and sometimes mere survival isn't worth it. Its a very romantic ideology that looks great on film, but may not be so appealing in real life.

Revolutionary Road (2008,  R)
Revolutionary Road
Leo and Kate give great performances here, but the film itself is no joy filled picnic. If you love watching 2 people fight for 2 hours then this is your movie. It also does nothing for the traditional family. So while I respect the performances I can say that I didn't have a great time suffering along with these characters and their miserable lives. Put it in that cetegory of "well made film" but NEVER want to see it again.

RocknRolla (2008,  R)
RocknRolla
Dug it !! Bad-Ass soundtrack. Great action pieces (stylistically done, of course) and a great story. Mark Strong takes over the "Turkish" - Jason Statham role here, but is still great in the part. Guy Ritchie is a bad-ass... from time to time. :-)

Doubt (2008,  PG-13)

Earth Shattering performance from Streep, simply amazing. The film itself is heartbreaking when you see how people react to the situation. Its all so very uncomfortable, as it should be.

Max Payne (2008,  PG-13)
Max Payne
This has got to be the worst year for MARK WAHLBERG ever. He can only play himself and thats mostly just deadpan. Sadly the idea behind this film could have made for an interesting flick but it feels rushed and completely mis-cast. Its sad to see Chris O'Donnell demoted to supporting bit-part. How the HELL is Ludacris getting cast in films?? He is laughable and conpletely un-nessesary in this thing. I did really dig the demon imagery. Major Ups to the FX guys, but it it was the ONLY thing I wanted to see. Rather than these demons being hallucinations why not actually set this flick during the Apocalypse. Make that shit the real world collapsing in on Max. Then it's epic. Here its just eye candy with a stunted attempt at something worthwhile. Mila Kunis = THE WORST. So Bad. and The Bridges Brothers play THE SAME betraying best-friend in 2008. I could make a visual montage out of some of the visuals in this thing and fluish the rest of it. It would probably be about 4 minutes long.

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008,  R)
Repo! The Genetic Opera
OK.. ummm.. thats a big NO THANKS for me. I guess I can see how a certain audience would like this but for me it was an extended chore to sit through. Terrible on all levels, again, to me. If this is your thing then.. enjoy. ick.

W. (2008,  PG-13)
W.
I was suprised that Stone presented GW in such a sympathetic light. Its definately not a hatchett job by any means. Brolin turns in a fantastic performance and really nails all of W.'s mannerisms and speech. The film derails when it stops being a bipoic and jams all the Iraq screw-ups down our throats in such a pat way that DID NOT occur in real life. It becomes silly when you realize this is just Stone and the writers trying to cover all their "points" about how and why the iraq war was a huge mistake. Overall it is still an interesting effort.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008,  PG-13)
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
JOHN HUGHES: THE NEXT GENERATION should eb the title of this sweet little film that pops with atmosphere in a one-night journey through the New York music scene. I have a complete crush on KAT DENNINGS. She's just gorgeous. Ari Graynor (as the drunk friend) has the best scene in the flick when she tries to beg a turkey sandwhich off a stranger. I literally replayed the scene like 4 times it was so funny. The constant music is appropriate and should be nice for fans of this type of stuff, but mostly it graited on my nerves. This film, of course, wasnt made for 40 year old dudes, so I give it some lee-way there. But overall I enjoyed it.

Quarantine (2008,  R)
Quarantine
This is BLAIR WITCH on steroids. A fierce and brutal close quarters zombie nightmare falls on these unlucky folks trapped inside an LA Apartment complex, unable to get out and being attacked from within. This film is just brutal to the extreme. Jennifer Carpenter (from DEXTER) does a pretty convincing job of being hysterical for almost the entire film. I loved that this was only told from a single POV camera, really making it feel more like events as they actually happened. The filmmakers did an amazing job of cutting at just the right moments as to keep the real time vibe moving. YES, I have had my fill of Zombie movies, but this takes the best of the genre and makes its visceral and in your face and as it could be happening to you. Te film isn't perfect, but with a wrnching final act it truly makes it mark on the genre. How the hell am I going to sleep tonight after this?

Fireproof (2008,  PG)
Fireproof
While I appreciate the sentiment of the film I still can't get behind this film like I did FACING THE GIANTS. the acting is still wonky, corny and not believable in anyway. Kirk Cameron comes of as a pussy whipped fool who must bow down and get bitch slapped by a cheating and selfish Wife to prove a kind of non-attainable unconditional love that really only God can display. Sure it is a worthy goal, but what happens 2 weeks later when the Husband makes a mistake and doesnt clean the whole damn house? Just add a little bit of realism to this and maybe it could at least aspire to more than just Sunday school for the Church at large. Its not that I don't respect what Sherwood Baptist Church has accomplished with their films, its just that I think they are mostly already preaching to the choir.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
WOW, did I ever HATE this movie. Hate is too kind of a word. I loathed every single person in this thing. I am in no way attracted to the "Bohemian" lifestyle and people who do nothing but go to Art shows, smoke cigarettes and drink wine all day. They seem like people from Jupiter or soemthing. I am too pedestrian, too Joe Wal-Mart to be concerned with "art" and "poetry" and haning out in cafe's in Spain. Does anyone actually work there? GIMME A FRIGGIN BREAK. Maybe its a good movie, I dont know.. but me personally it was liking getting teeth pulled watching this crapfest unfold.

The Reader (2008,  R)
The Reader
This film brings so many issues, not just about the Holocaust but about a people's reaction to their part in it. How can those involved ever possibly re-pay for the atrocities? powerful and yet demanding issues. Amazing performance her for Winslet. I couldnt shake this film for awhile and it still haunts me when I consider all the issues. Is it even possible to have sympothy for those who participated in attempted genocide? My brain fries.

Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
Fantastic performance by Penn in a moving bio pic. I don't have to agree with a particular agenda to know that prejudice is wrong. This film shows the true story but also addresses the issue of predujice. We live in a very different day now from when this film takes place, a world that was helped shaped by these events. Wether or not that is good or bad is a matter of perspective, but no one benefits from predujice that impeades basic human rights to be live a free life as you choose. I wish the story of Dan White had been fleshed out a little more as it felt tacked on at the end.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008,  PG-13)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Oh man did this ever blow Donkey Balls. No suprise at all really as Hollywood pisses on a classic for it's branded attempt to steal cash from idiot teenagers on a Friday night. This was just so bad, especially with its retarded Military and slap you in the head Enviromental message. NO THANKS. What an embarressment.

An American Carol (2008,  PG-13)
An American Carol
Bwaaahaha.. Michael Moore bashing is such fun!! It was amazing just how many times the Michael Moore character was beaten up, stepped on, had stuff thrown at him. It was damn funny and satisfying. Sadly, the movie itself is pretty damn awful. Lame jokes, weak production values, bad acting.... yea...not good. So while laughing and enjoying the spanking at the expense of Liberals everywhere I still had to hold my nose.

War, Inc. (2008,  R)
War, Inc.
Hillary Duff = RAGING HOT!! Beyond that this film is a decent black comedy thats trying to offer a message about Capitalism in war and such, blah blah. While it's funny at times it is never able to be taken seriously. There sometimes feels to be giant jumps in scenes that dont make sense. Overall its kind of a mess with no real focus.. is it an Anti-War statement? Anti-Capitalism? Character Sketch? I can never get enough of Marissa Tomei or Hillary Duff so that was a plus. Middle of the road stuff here. MEH.

Fun and quirky comedy. Not a silly farce like you might think, but rather a serious movie with comedic elements. A nice time.

Fanboys (2008,  PG-13)
Fanboys
As a big Star Wars fan this film surprisingly really gave me a good time. YES, there is much moronic crap going on here in a very "low budget" way, but at the heart of the movie is a true love for all things Star Wars, especially toward the end of the film. There are MANY little bits and lines that ONLY true SW/Lucas fans will get, and being one of those geeks makes it that much more fun. Fantastic cameos by William Shatner and Carrie Fisher. Dan Fogler (Hutch) is difficult to stomach as he is played WAY over the top. But again, SW fans should have a blast here. Too bad George Lucas himself didn't make a cameo. Its funny how people think that Star Wars and Star Trek fans have this beef with each other. I love both franchises almost equally. Overall great fun for the loyal Star Wars fanboy.
