Frost/Nixon (2008, R)
Fascinating subject matter and an amazing performance from Frank Langella. If anything this film created sympathey for Nixon, which I appreciated. Something felt awkward and I hated Sam Rockwell's character. Michael Sheen, in my opinion, always looked like a deer caught in the headlights, which felt strange. I think this is a great film for history, but it has an obvious liberal bias. If anything the film made me want to investigate the actual interviews and see the real Nixon and how he handled the same event. I mean WHY watch this film as opposed to watching the actual interview? That is an interesting topic for thought. |

Eagle Eye (2008, PG-13)
This movie is soooooo ridiculous. I cant even count all the ways. This is the retarded step cousin to LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD except with worse actors and things that are even more over the top, unbelivable and just plan moronic. I swear I cracked up almost every second that Rosario Dawson was on screen as a what... Air Force Investagator? One of her worst roles ever. Billy Bob should be embarrassed of his role.. I hope he made some cash becasue he also was laughable in his cliche grizzeled Cop role. SOME DUMB, SO BAD, DIE HOLLYWOOD DIE. |

Slumdog Millionaire (2008, R)
Definately enjoyed this film. Its a cultural journey through india, the likes of which most Stateside folk have never seen or can hardly even imagine. Sure, its a bit of a fairytale, but that makes you leave with a big fat grin on your face. Enjoyed the score/music as well. I don't know that Id call it a masterpiece, but it was charming, heartfelt and moving. It only lacked REGIS !! |

The Rocker (2008, PG-13)
Forgettable but still fun flick about a drummer who doesnt want to grow up. Rainn Wilson is a lot of fun here. Very different from Dwight Shrute. I also enjoyed Emma Stone (who was great in THE HOUSE BUNNY) and Jason Sudeikis (SNL). The way the music biz is represted is totally ridiculous and unbelievable, but in this flick it really doesnt matter much. Get a few giggles and then forget about it. |

The Brave One (2007, R)
Fantastic performances from Jodie and Terrance Howard here. Very emotinal and gripping. The growing relationship between Foster and Howard is the true highlight of the film. As I watching the film (caught it on cable) I didnt know who directed, but made total sense when I saw Neil Jordan's name attached. Amazing job from him as well. My major flaw with the film is the number of times the main character happens to accidentally walk in to crimes as they are occuring. On 3 or 4 occassions she happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The crime rate in New York would have to be at ESCAPE FROM NY levels for that to occur. It hurts this otherwise really fantastic film. |

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008, R)
What if Stanley Kubrick had made a Vampire Film? It might have possibly looked something like this. It definately had echos (at least stylistically) of THE SHINNING. Not to take anything away from Tomas Alfredson though, who here creates one of the most simple yet deep and rich "Horror" films ever made. Astonishing is about the only word I can use to describe this near masterpiece. This film is all about enviroment. You can almost feel the cold and snowy setting of this Swedish City pour through the screen. Sound is a MAJOR element to this film as we seem to hear every little breath from the characters. Theres is SOOO Much to discuss in this. Simple fantastic with and ending that will BLOW YOUR FREAKING MIND. Brilliant and haunting work. |

Kyûtî Hanî (Cutie Honey) (2004, Unrated)
OK.. I admit it.. The poster / DVD cover for this was the lone thing that pulled me in. Color me a Dude. BUT suprisingly, some of this flick is very fun in a very OVER THE TOP kind of way. Yes, its pretty awful, but its nutty style (very anime but with REAL PEOPLE) is very fun. Its like a jacked up episode of POWER RANGERS but not so dumb... but still kinda dumb. I wish they had kept the pace up that they had at the beginning and made this just a 90 minute battle, but sadly it gets bogged down in all this mundane talky relationship waste. WHY? This thing had all the ingredients to be a great ride, but instead becomes a chore to get through. I'll throw it on the GUILTY PLEASURES heap and visit it when I need some hot, cutest anime chick hoping around and slaying people in bad costumes. |

Man on Wire (2008, PG-13)
This is a fascinating tale on a dumb stunt. Sure its an amazing feat of daring and courage, but really... is it something worth possibly losing your life over? I doubt this film would have been made and Phillippe Petit would have ever been heralded had he fallen to his death. The film itself is a great re-counting of the trials that it took to pull this feat off with lots of photos and film footage. Sadly, Petit himself comes off as an impassioned "artist" who has a great dream... but also very selfish, egotistical and reckless. |

The Wrestler (2008, R)
This film is all about Mickey Rourke's performance, although it is quite "Rocky Balboa". Nice work all around in a very heartfelt performance. I also loved Marisa Tomei's character who, as an older stripper working to survive is the perfect compliment character to Rourke's has-been Wrestler, Randy. She, pretty damn bravely, performs as an honest, true to God stripper, titties open for all to see. In the end the message here is to be true to who you are, and sometimes mere survival isn't worth it. Its a very romantic ideology that looks great on film, but may not be so appealing in real life. |

Revolutionary Road (2008, R)
Leo and Kate give great performances here, but the film itself is no joy filled picnic. If you love watching 2 people fight for 2 hours then this is your movie. It also does nothing for the traditional family. So while I respect the performances I can say that I didn't have a great time suffering along with these characters and their miserable lives. Put it in that cetegory of "well made film" but NEVER want to see it again. |

The Foot Fist Way (2006, R)
OUSTANDING!!! Absolutely Hillarious. Danny McBride is a raging bad-ass. His Fred Simmons Tae-Kwon-Do Master is King of the Losers but he has the heart to battle against his failing life. Betrayed by his Wife and the "Hero of his Life", in the end he proves he is the Champion that he always reminds you that he is. LOVED IT !! |

Max Payne (2008, PG-13)
This has got to be the worst year for MARK WAHLBERG ever. He can only play himself and thats mostly just deadpan. Sadly the idea behind this film could have made for an interesting flick but it feels rushed and completely mis-cast. Its sad to see Chris O'Donnell demoted to supporting bit-part. How the HELL is Ludacris getting cast in films?? He is laughable and conpletely un-nessesary in this thing. I did really dig the demon imagery. Major Ups to the FX guys, but it it was the ONLY thing I wanted to see. Rather than these demons being hallucinations why not actually set this flick during the Apocalypse. Make that shit the real world collapsing in on Max. Then it's epic. Here its just eye candy with a stunted attempt at something worthwhile. Mila Kunis = THE WORST. So Bad. and The Bridges Brothers play THE SAME betraying best-friend in 2008. I could make a visual montage out of some of the visuals in this thing and fluish the rest of it. It would probably be about 4 minutes long. |

W. (2008, PG-13)
I was suprised that Stone presented GW in such a sympathetic light. Its definately not a hatchett job by any means. Brolin turns in a fantastic performance and really nails all of W.'s mannerisms and speech. The film derails when it stops being a bipoic and jams all the Iraq screw-ups down our throats in such a pat way that DID NOT occur in real life. It becomes silly when you realize this is just Stone and the writers trying to cover all their "points" about how and why the iraq war was a huge mistake. Overall it is still an interesting effort. |

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008, PG-13)
JOHN HUGHES: THE NEXT GENERATION should eb the title of this sweet little film that pops with atmosphere in a one-night journey through the New York music scene. I have a complete crush on KAT DENNINGS. She's just gorgeous. Ari Graynor (as the drunk friend) has the best scene in the flick when she tries to beg a turkey sandwhich off a stranger. I literally replayed the scene like 4 times it was so funny. The constant music is appropriate and should be nice for fans of this type of stuff, but mostly it graited on my nerves. This film, of course, wasnt made for 40 year old dudes, so I give it some lee-way there. But overall I enjoyed it. |

Quarantine (2008, R)
This is BLAIR WITCH on steroids. A fierce and brutal close quarters zombie nightmare falls on these unlucky folks trapped inside an LA Apartment complex, unable to get out and being attacked from within. This film is just brutal to the extreme. Jennifer Carpenter (from DEXTER) does a pretty convincing job of being hysterical for almost the entire film. I loved that this was only told from a single POV camera, really making it feel more like events as they actually happened. The filmmakers did an amazing job of cutting at just the right moments as to keep the real time vibe moving. YES, I have had my fill of Zombie movies, but this takes the best of the genre and makes its visceral and in your face and as it could be happening to you. Te film isn't perfect, but with a wrnching final act it truly makes it mark on the genre. How the hell am I going to sleep tonight after this? |

Fireproof (2008, PG)
While I appreciate the sentiment of the film I still can't get behind this film like I did FACING THE GIANTS. the acting is still wonky, corny and not believable in anyway. Kirk Cameron comes of as a pussy whipped fool who must bow down and get bitch slapped by a cheating and selfish Wife to prove a kind of non-attainable unconditional love that really only God can display. Sure it is a worthy goal, but what happens 2 weeks later when the Husband makes a mistake and doesnt clean the whole damn house? Just add a little bit of realism to this and maybe it could at least aspire to more than just Sunday school for the Church at large. Its not that I don't respect what Sherwood Baptist Church has accomplished with their films, its just that I think they are mostly already preaching to the choir. |

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008, PG-13)
WOW, did I ever HATE this movie. Hate is too kind of a word. I loathed every single person in this thing. I am in no way attracted to the "Bohemian" lifestyle and people who do nothing but go to Art shows, smoke cigarettes and drink wine all day. They seem like people from Jupiter or soemthing. I am too pedestrian, too Joe Wal-Mart to be concerned with "art" and "poetry" and haning out in cafe's in Spain. Does anyone actually work there? GIMME A FRIGGIN BREAK. Maybe its a good movie, I dont know.. but me personally it was liking getting teeth pulled watching this crapfest unfold. |

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008, PG-13)
Some had said that the film was very similar to FORREST GUMP, but upon seeing it I was shocked at truly how similar it felt in structure and with many characters. Theres Momma, Lt. Dan, Bubba, Jenny and even Lil Forrest. WTF?? Did Fincher miss this, especially considering that the writer was responsible for both scripts? Beyond that I can say a few good things.. Amazing (but not yet seemless) FX, beautiful score and great acting. On a technical level the film is flawless..but when reaching deeper it felt like a manipulation, like "and cue tears from audience". While I appreciate the sentiment in the film and a great performance from Pitt, I am rather lost as to my overall feelings on this, but I definately feel a sense of dissapointment. |

The Reader (2008, R)
This film brings so many issues, not just about the Holocaust but about a people's reaction to their part in it. How can those involved ever possibly re-pay for the atrocities? powerful and yet demanding issues. Amazing performance her for Winslet. I couldnt shake this film for awhile and it still haunts me when I consider all the issues. Is it even possible to have sympothy for those who participated in attempted genocide? My brain fries. |

Milk (2008, R)
Fantastic performance by Penn in a moving bio pic. I don't have to agree with a particular agenda to know that prejudice is wrong. This film shows the true story but also addresses the issue of predujice. We live in a very different day now from when this film takes place, a world that was helped shaped by these events. Wether or not that is good or bad is a matter of perspective, but no one benefits from predujice that impeades basic human rights to be live a free life as you choose. I wish the story of Dan White had been fleshed out a little more as it felt tacked on at the end. |

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008, PG-13)
Oh man did this ever blow Donkey Balls. No suprise at all really as Hollywood pisses on a classic for it's branded attempt to steal cash from idiot teenagers on a Friday night. This was just so bad, especially with its retarded Military and slap you in the head Enviromental message. NO THANKS. What an embarressment. |

An American Carol (2008, PG-13)
Bwaaahaha.. Michael Moore bashing is such fun!! It was amazing just how many times the Michael Moore character was beaten up, stepped on, had stuff thrown at him. It was damn funny and satisfying. Sadly, the movie itself is pretty damn awful. Lame jokes, weak production values, bad acting.... yea...not good. So while laughing and enjoying the spanking at the expense of Liberals everywhere I still had to hold my nose. |

War, Inc. (2008, R)
Hillary Duff = RAGING HOT!! Beyond that this film is a decent black comedy thats trying to offer a message about Capitalism in war and such, blah blah. While it's funny at times it is never able to be taken seriously. There sometimes feels to be giant jumps in scenes that dont make sense. Overall its kind of a mess with no real focus.. is it an Anti-War statement? Anti-Capitalism? Character Sketch? I can never get enough of Marissa Tomei or Hillary Duff so that was a plus. Middle of the road stuff here. MEH. |

Rendition (2007, R)
I was dumb founded at how off the charts HAMMY this was. Full of "hostage" cliche goodness. Reese Witherspoon was so amazingly awful in the movie that she certainly almost entered MOVIE JAIL for this turd alone. Remember the "Hostage returns home" scene where, Cab pulls up to the home (of course they wouldnt have met him at the Airport right?), Son is playing with ball in yard.. long stares with deadpan emotion, longing stares commence and continue, Wife walks out of house with newly born baby in arms to join in the cavalcade of long, emotion-less stares... not a single tear on said Wife's face. Until they slowly, like Zombies, move in to each others arms. |

Quantum of Solace (2008, PG-13)
QoS is the first true SEQUEL in the Bond film series. Yes, there are obvious films that overlap with repeat characters (non-regulars) but this is the first DIRECT sequel. It's really a continuation of CR from frame 1. I guess I'm OK with that, but as it's a NEW thing it takes a moment to get used to. |

Color this a guilty pleasure if need be but I had a damn good time with this wanna-be Chinese Cinema flick. Sure.. it's american made, but thats not down home fight choreography. Just great, great stuff. Chan and Li are fantastic in this as well. Right or wrong.. I had a blast with my 2 boys at the theater enjoying this bad-ass chop sockey radness. Loved Jet Li as the Monkey King. |

Encounters at the End of the World (2007, G)
Quirky, aimless doc. with glorious footage shot under the ice in Antarctica. Since this free flowing piece never really aims to "say" anything it just comes across as a mildly interesting travel log about the people who live and work in Antarctica. Strip the amazing footage away and this feels hollow and pointless. This might work better if you stripped out the interviews and just ran music over the Anterctic photography. |

Godzilla 2000 (2000, PG)
Only the Japaneese can make a good GODZILLA movie. Had a great time with this. Sure, the MAN IN SUIT effects are cheesy compared to bog time Hollywood FX, but the intent is great AND I enjoy the sense of scale and scope. Godzilla looks KA-FRIGGIN-HUGE, and that is something Hollywood blows it on. SCOPE. Make it feel BIG. Enjoy the story as well, although it was the same story we've scene in every GODZILLA movie mostly.. GOdzilla protects Tokyo from the evil OTHER Monster. Great fun to be had here. |

Twilight (2008, PG-13)
I finally took the plunge and watched it. I didn't hate it. I was led to believe it was the worst crap in history. Wrong. Yes, its most definitely a chick flick. It also has wrinkles in Vampire Mythology you would never expect. I mean vampire Baseball? WTF? Yea, kinda silly, killy kinda dumb in spots, but completely watchable, at least to see where the story takes us. I have noit read these books.. but such a reluctant Vampire as Edward is reminds me of Anne Rice's epic Vampire Novels, which I read most of. It never rises to that level in anyway... but for the teen crowd this is Lestat lite. Anyways.. I dont know.. did like carter Burwell's score, but thats a given. Didn't hate, didn't love it. |

Wanted (2008, R)
How about a big ol' bag of "HELL FUCKING YES". This is EXACTLY what I expected from Timur Bekmambetov (The NIGHT-WATCH films). I crown him the new big official action BAD-ASS on the planet. Fuck all the dirty scabs like Ratner, Bay and their moronic little clones. Lets let the guys who have the juice and the balls to bring the HARDCORE back into action movies through the gates. It takes someone OUTSIDE of the brain-dead coffins of Hollywood to do something right. Sure, this movie is over-the-top, but I knew that going in. Its done icreativily and with intelligent film grammer that isn't happy with just recycling ripped off John Woo cliches. Yea, I don't buy that a bullet can be curved around a room, do a full 360 going through about 6 skulls either... but it sure played cool within it's own microcosm of "Super-Assasins". So just say YES to this return to style even if it comes from the other side of the world. |

Watermelon Man (1970, R)
Very funny comedy/farce which also shares a brutal message about race relations in the late 60s/early 70s. This is actually the first Melvin Van Peebles film I have seen. I look forward to more of his voice in his other films, especially in relation to the time in which the films were created. The ending is un-forgiving with it's message and really ends on a powerful note. |

Mutant Chronicles (2008, R)
This is all kinds of BAD in many ways, but I do salute Simon Hunter for being extremely ambitious.. to a point where it's measly budget cannot live up it's the vision. There's an interesting plot in there somewhere that sadly gets snuffed out under the weight of cheesy digital blood, hideous and uneven pacing and laugh out loud atrocious acting. While I think this "cheap behemoth" could possibly develop a cult follow I don't think that it's ready for prme time by a long shot. It's too bad really, as I think that there are promising elements to it. I am interested to see where Simon Hunter goes next. File under Coulda Been. |

Day of the Dead (2008, R)
Middle of the road remake, that of course, has nothing to do with the original film. A great example of how Hollywood shoplifts a "brand" to then do whatever the hell it wants with it. This is a paint by numbers Zombie flick. No suprises. It is very over the top corny with Zombies always leaping and jumping and running at "faster then human" speed. Cracked me up the way Zombies just changed within seconds with all the flesh on there body festering up instantly. DUMB. Not the worst Zombie flick, but not too great either. Nick Cannon = SUPER dumb. |

Career Opportunities (1991, PG-13)
In this movie Jennifer Connelly is about the hottest and most beautiful female ever commited to film. She's breathtaking. Overall the movie rings hollow in that what starts as an interesting character study in to all things "John Hughes" about High School peer class level turns super DUMB when 2 bumbling thiefs enter the picture. This fairly lame movie will be timeless if anything for Connelly's devastating appearance. TOO DAMN HOTTT !!! |

Lost Boys 2: The Tribe (2008, Unrated)
Beyond seeing what happened to the FROG Bros. in this re-hash (almost remake) of the first film, there isn't much going on here. and WHY cast a main character who looks like an almost perfect double for Jason Patric? The main vampire was laughably BAD. Bad acting goes to horrible everytime he opens his mouth. While I didn't completely hate this, I felt like the majority of it is a waste of time. Why not make it a sequel and tell me what happened to the original characters rather than just repeating the same crap with new people? Corey Feldman was fun (although Hammy) in his return as Edgar Frog. IF we get another sequel can we focus on Edgar and not all this other crap? Meh. |
