Although, the first Transformers film wasn't perfect i still enjoyed it. This film however i didn't enjoy as much. Perhpas because we'd seen it all before in the first film. I know its a big dumb action movie and i wasn't exactly expecting Academy Award calibre performances or something, but there was just no substance to it at all.
Explosion, explosion, explosion. Shards of metal and rock flying everywhere. I know it sounds ridiculous because thats exactly what this film is, but after a while i began to tire of it. Also i was sick of all the U.S Military stuff. Infact there was so many scenes involving the military, at times it felt like i was watching some U.S recruitment advert. Ohhhhh look at these shiny weapons and vehicles we have. Come on! If it wasn't Predator drones this or C-17s that, it was aircraft carriers or submarines, etc etc. I really got sick of it. It was like pure military propaganda.
The humour in the film wasn't funny at all and fell flat in my opinion. Two transformers in the film (whose names i can't even remember) did practically nothing in the entire film and did not add to or futher the storyline in any way. They just constantly talked like "ghetto" gangsters and made silly little quips. Another transformer seemed to be modelled on some old grumpy, senile, English pensioner, which was just really odd.
Megan Fox, as all hetrosexual males know is incredibly hot. Obviously she is just in the film as a sex object and as eye candy. She has a couple of scenes in the film which are totally unnecessary, except as if to say, hey look at how hot and sexy Megan Fox is. I admit i go to see the Transformers movies for two things. The special effects and Megan Fox. I love a big dumb action movie every now and then like many other people and thats exactly what this is, make no mistake, but this time i really did just think it was a waste of f***ing time and was doing myself no favours by watching it. Don't waste your money by seeing this "film." Go and watch something which doesn't insult your intelligence or make you seem shallow.

I admit it i was wrong. I expected this to be terrible. But as a Star Trek fan i thought this was really good, not perfect, but good. I have watched and grown up with Star Trek: The Next Generation and other Star Trek series, but have never been a massive fan of the Original series, although i was aware of it and appreciated it in terms of its relevence to the other series and its almost iconic pop culture status.
There were good points and bad points to this new movie. The cast were wonderful each played their part brilliantly, really capturing the spirit of the characters and the original actors. Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) were my favourites. Karl Urban (McCoy) was also great along with the others. The only one i didn't particularly like was Simon Pegg (Scotty), as in my opinion he just didn't seem to fit the role and seemed for the most part just comic relief. The score to the film by Michael Giaccino is epic and rousing and works well, especially the new theme, while the inclusion of the Original theme music during the end credits was a nice touch. The references to other Star Trek series or events is very limited and at bests trivial to any newcomer to the Star Trek universe. There is less technical dialogue, and the film to be honest isn't particularly intelligent, there are no grand ideas or themes like the Star Trek of old. Instead we get huge CGI space battles, car chases and scenes of semi naked women. Although i am exaggerating somewhat it is not hard to see that the makers of the film have clearly tried to cater for today's younger audience members. This is a film where you really don't have to think very hard. However saying that the film is still enjoyable, with some great visuals and incredible special effects. In terms of plot, the first half of the film was great, but overall the idea of time travel was cliched and had been done to death numerous times on the television shows and films. Including Leonard Nimoy in the film was a good move in the sense of bridging the gap between the old and new, yet his meeting with Chris Pine's Kirk seems contrived and very unbelievable and then more so with meeting Scotty. Nero, who is the villain of the film, is played by Eric Bana and i had high hopes about him, having read reviews saying he was a great villain. He was not. He was bland and two dimensional. His dialogue was plain (and mainly just included "Hello will you come over to my ship to negotiate") and he was somewhat menacing, yet no where near as intimidating as he could have been. The reasons for his actions im the film and the whole story behind him actually having travelled to the past are somewhat vague and does not seemed to have been explained fully. Instead we are treated to a short flashback. I didn't really feel anything for Nero, for his motives or anything else. He was just rubbish to be honest. The main gripe i have with the film, what with being a fan of Star Trek, was the idea that Nero's travelling back in time and subsequent actions, messed up the timeline and created an "alternate reality." Again, not exactly something original when it comes to Star Trek and it seemed a cheap and somewhat lazy way for the writers to just toss the whole Star Trek universe of the past 40 years out of the window. Admittedly the whole Star Trek mythos is vast and some what complicated and in terms of rebooting the franchise there wasn't much else they could do. But to blatantly disregard it all, seemed unfair and unecessary to a certain extent. It was clearly done as a way to open the door for future sequels, where the writers will be able to do anything they want without regards to consistacy with other Star Trek tv shows or movies. Overall as a watcher of Star Trek since i was very young, i actually liked this film. Sure there are a few minor points which i could grumble and nit pick about, but really there wasn't much else the writers could do without tying their hands behind their backs. It was a lot better than i expected. If you have been a fan of Star Trek then you will probably like this film, you might not think it is fantastic, but it could certainly have been a lot worse. If you don't like Star Trek or you've never really watched it then you can come into this film without any prior knowlegde and perhaps still enjoy it. It is interesting to see all these people who say they like Star Trek, i am not saying they don't, but i wonder would many of them be saying the same thing if this film had been panned and ridiculed?
I am looking forward to this, after just recently reading the book. Really need to see the trailer! After reading a lot about the film, this is probably my anticipated film of this year.
A brilliant, original film. It was a refreshing change to see such a film, set in South Africa rather than the United States. A really interesting story, with a great documentary style. The special effects were great, but wern't overblown as in some films.
