Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle) (2005,  PG)
Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle)
What a great movie to start the new year with. I only decided to watch this movie because of its good reviews on Flixster and i was expecting not to like it or for it to be just about watchable but the storyline was really interesting and all of the main characters were very likeable. It is a beautiful movie.

Blackout (2008,  Unrated)
Blackout
This movie is about three interesting characters who get trapped in a elevator. Claudia is a student who wants to get back to her grandmother who is sick in hospital,Tommy is getting ready to leave the city with his girlfriend and Karl is a widowed doctor who wants to make his flat suitable for his daughter to visit. All of this sounds pretty boring but one of these characters is a serial killer and for the other two characters this situation quickly turns into a nightmare.

I enjoyed this movie,it was different and the unusual camera work worked.

One of the characters really repulsed me,they were vile.

Oh and one more thing,i think from now on i will take the stairs.

Testament (1983,  PG)
Testament
Testament is a story told through the eyes of a housewive/mother trying to cope and take care of her family after a nuclear attack. The movie begins quite slowly letting us get to know what the family is like. After the attack the mother keeps a journal and we see several scenes from happier days played on a projector in the mothers memory. Besides from two bright flashes of light this movie offers no other special effects but it does show us emotional devastation, suffering, personal loss and heartbreak in a realistic and believable manner. Quite a few scenes brought tears to my eyes and i think i am in need of a feel good film.

This Is England (2007,  Unrated)
This Is England
The attention to detail in this movie is perfect, even the sweets looked like they actually did in 1983 and it makes you realise just how much sweets have shrunk! The acting was some of the best i have ever watched. Thomas Turgoose was amazing, this was his first acting role.
7
The Nanny Diaries (2007,  PG-13)
The Nanny Diaries
I had rated this NOT INTERESTED but decided to record it because it was showing for free on tv and i am surprised to say it but i actually really enjoyed this movie. I am not a fan of Scarlett Johannson but she was brilliant in this movie portraying Annie the Nannie and although it did not make me cry it did tug on my heart a little.
8
Red Road (2007,  Unrated)
Red Road
This movie was subtle and slow, the characters were desperate and everything about it was bleak. I would imagine many viewers would get bored within the first fifteen minutes but the slowness of the movie is worth bearing because this films storyline is both interesting and moving.
9
Mona Lisa Smile (2003,  PG-13)
Mona Lisa Smile
I have avoided watching this movie for years certain i was not going to enjoy it so when i did watch it today it was a pleasant surprise.

Good acting by most of the cast,Maggie Gyllenhaals acting stood out above everyone elses though, she was superb portraying Giselle the femme fatale. I also liked Julia Roberts more in this movie,i like it when she plays characters with more depth than she plays in the rom coms. The costumes were great and authentic and the campus looked beautiful.
10
Prayers for Bobby (2009,  Unrated)
Prayers for Bobby
Prayers For Bobby is the true story of Mary Griffith a gay rights crusader whose own teenage son committed suicide because she refused to accept his homosexuality.

This is a very touching and moving movie,i cried almost all the way through the second half. The movie shows the struggles that young gay and lesbian people go through. Unlike other movies that deal with the same subject this movie did not hold back at all. When Bobby comes out to his parents and siblings his mother Mary who is very religious refuses to accept that he is gay,she loathes gay people and thinks they are sinners who will go to Hell so she attempts to "cure" Bobby, she uses several methods including fixing him up with a girl, sending him for therapy and leaving memos around the family home that have quotes from the Bible on.

The final scene was so beautiful that i could not stop crying,i felt very proud of all my friends who have faced this kind of ignorance and prejudice. I strongly recommend this movie to any parent who is unaccepting of their sons or daughters sexuality, please love your child for who they are before its too late.

She Creature (2001,  R)
She Creature
She Creature was surprisingly a delight to watch. She Creature begins in Ireland with two lovers (Angus played by Rufus Sewell and Lillie played by Carla Gugino) who run a freak circus with fake freaks,Lillie is the fake mermaid in the show. One night they meet an old man who takes them to his gothic mansion (which was to die for ) where he shows them a real mermaid and warns them about how dangerous she is in the hope that this will put them off ever trying to catch a real mermain. However Angus sees dollar signs in his eyes so during the night he goes back to the gothic mansion and steals the mermaid,he decides to take the mermaid to America so earn a small fortune. The rest of the movie takes place on the boat where the mermaid shows her true colours.

The story is very totally original and very compelling plus the visuals are great. Allegedly this movie was shot in 18 days and was filmed on a very low budget but it does not show. The period costumes were stunning and the settings were very good. The whole movie reminded me of the old Hammer House of Horror movies and it had some very nice old school horror touches. It was very much like a good vampire flick but with mermaids.

Carla Gugino is the main star of this movie, she is incredibly beautiful and also her character Lillie is very sexy in a not so obvious way.

A must see for fans of elegant gothic horror flicks.

I never thought i would say this but Vinnie Jones was brilliant. His mean ugly face fits The Butcher role perfectly.

A good horror movie. Plenty of blood and gore. The plot was decent although you have to come to your on conclusion on a few things.

Two French detectives working on seperate cases join forces when their cases merge.

Blindness (2008,  R)
Blindness
I found this movie kind of lame,i laughed in parts when there was no need to and it had major flaws (a group of blind kids walking around things casually after they have robbed people and Julianne Moore could see so why didnt she just get in a car and drive everyone back to her house?) but i did enjoy watching it even if it was really miserable and bleak.

Blindness starts off slowly and takes what seems like forever to get in to. Nothing seems to make sense,on becoming blind the characters seem quite calm and are took to quarantine with no tests,no research,no doctors trying to find a cure. Halfway through the movie we suddenly get a narrator,Danny Glovers character,or was he there from the start and i just didnt notice? The screen frequently goes completely white and blank or black and blank, which gets really annoying after a while,by now i think we have got the point that everyone is blind.

After six hours(okay about 2 but it felt like 6)of watching this movie the ending is predictable and bland. I rate this movie 4/5,its good but not great, glad i checked it out.

Breaking the Waves (1996,  R)
Breaking the Waves
Great acting and great storyline but this movie was so depressing that i did not enjoy it at all,i never want to watch it again.

This movie left me feeling angry. Besides from Jan,his friends and the doctor i can honestly say i hated every other man in this movie, really really hated them even the horrible little male children who threw the stones, little bastards. The women were not much better, infact the only character i really liked was Dodo, even Bess did my head in but the way she was treated by the islanders including her own family and men on the boat was vile and sickening.

This could possibly be the most depressing movie i have ever seen.
18
The Ferryman (2007,  R)
The Ferryman
Yippee finally a unknown horror movie this is not a load of crap. The Ferryman starts quite slowly but this is a good thing because it enables us to learn about the characters and their pasts. Most of them (except for two) are nice people and come across very realistic, not the stupid brainless teenagers who normally take the lead roles in this kind of movie. After the get-to-know-you part of the movie the action starts and the movie becomes quite exciting with a good horror atmosphere with a worthy ending. Not a scary movie but it was very enjoyable and i felt for the characters. Very good.

Dustbin Baby (2008,  PG)
Dustbin Baby
Dustbin Baby is the story of April. April is a foundling, she was abandoned at birth and left in a dustbin like a piece of trash. The story starts on the morning of Aprils 14th birthday and April is living with yet another foster parent this one called Marion. After the two have a terrible row April leaves for school but decides to bunk off and goes in search of her past and her biological mother.

This is a really good movie. The characters are all brilliant and the names are fantastic. Jacqueline Wilson is an amazing writer. Its a great story full of imagination and emotion. A must see.

Mysterious Skin (2005,  NC-17)
Mysterious Skin
I had no idea what this movie was about before i sat down to watch it. After the first few scenes i was like "what the hell have i recorded". I am not easily shocked but i found some of the scenes very hard to watch infact in one scene you kind of know whats coming and so i almost pressed fast forward. A really good movie but i didnt enjoy it,it was pretty depressing.

Eden Lake (2008,  R)
Eden Lake
Recommended by Deano78.

This movie could share the title of another movie Thomas Turgoose was in - This Is England. The chav kids in this movie are the kind of kids that roam the streets of England everyday causing chaos and trouble, this movie is a good reflection of England in 2009 and the most disturbing thing about this movie is that unlike vampires, werewolves and zombies......chavs are real.

Two naive but nice adults go camping at Eden Lake, they come across a group of chav kids who torture and humiliate them. The things the couple are subjected to are very disturbing but also the kind of things we read about in the newspapers everyday. The acting is very good and the characters are all believable. I was expecting the ending but it still left me feeling flat.

Things We Lost in the Fire (2007,  R)
Things We Lost in the Fire
Never thought much of Halle Berry but thats changed now,she was brilliant in this movie, this is without a doubt her best work to date. Benicio Del Torro was also great and also the supporting cast - the children were fantastic. Thing We Lost In The Fire is about grief, addiction and several unlikely friendships. It features great camera work and direction. Very good.

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
This looks loads better than the first two movies and i prefer Rhona Mitra as the lead female role. If i like this movie it will be the first Underworld movie i have actually enjoyed, the first two were quite boring but watchable.

Recommended by jillbee23,DrLappos and JDFortuneFan.

Finally i enjoyed Underworld,yippee.

One of the best prequels i have ever seen. I especially liked the forbidden love between Sonja and Lucian and i loved all the hot lycans. Great special effects and i liked the whole feel of the movie, very dark and gothic. Rhona Mitra played the lead female vampire brilliantly, she was made for roles like this. I wish the other two movies had of been this good.

Stop Loss (2008,  R)
Stop Loss
Ryan Phillippe,Joseph Gordon-Levitt,Timothy Olyphant and Steven Strait.....swoon.....okay on a serious note this is actually quite a good movie, its well acted and it keeps the viewer interested. I liked it which is quite rare because i am not really into war themed movies. The only thing that bugged me slightly was Channing Tatum,i think this might be the first movie i have seen him in (the only reason i know of him is because he appears in all the teen mags my daughter reads) and he was a bit of a meat head, his acting was terrible......unlike Joseph Gordon-Levitts acting,he was amazing and i love how he manages to pull off so many different roles flawlessly.

Odd Girl Out (2005,  PG)
Odd Girl Out
I hate bullies!

Odd Girl Out is the story of Vanessa whose so-called best friends turn on her and make her life a living hell. This movie shows teenage girls just how quickly your friends can turn on you if they get jealous or if the boy they fancy fancies you.

I used to be a teenage girl (lol obviously because i am now female and 32),i have a 15 year old daughter and i have previously worked in schools and i found Odd Girl Out to be one of the most realistic movies i have ever seen and to anyone who found this movie OTT or unrealistic then thats great because it means you have never been bullied or humiliated in the way that Vanessa the lead character in this movie was.

The acting was superb, each actor played their character well and the movie gets your emotions going,i felt sad, sympathetic, angry and glad whilst watching it and many other emotions that many other dramatic movies fail to stir up in me. The bullies/bitches in this movie were utterly vile, disgusting horrible pathetic gutless creatures.

For fans of Speak.

Made of Honor
I had this rated this movie "NOT INTERESTED" but i watched it because it was on Sky Movies and i was out of rentals to watch. The trailers i had seen for this movie did not look promising but i have to admit i really really enjoyed it. I am not a big rom-com fan but this one managed to impress me. Okay so we have seen the plot many times before but who cares? Not me.
33
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008,  PG-13)
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
I liked this movie,it was different for example there is no stupid bet or dare involved and the guy does not realise he is in love with his female best friend,i can think of at least 2 movies i watched recently that did this and all though i enjoyed them both the same old same old ending is wearing thin. Plus he didnt constantly make out with his ex. Nick and Norah was sweet and refreshing and i liked the whole feel of the movie. It was light hearted and enjoyable.

The whole movie was like a pick n mix sweet selection.....there was a bit of everything. I Loved the characters and their backgrounds, loved The Jerkoffs. All the characters were very normal and most of them reminded me of people i know. It even reminded me of my own nights out.

Mongol (2008,  R)
Mongol
I really enjoyed Mongol (another movie i had rated Not Interested). I loved the early years when Temudjin was little and he went to choose his bride,Borte. Good narration and some great battle scenes plus the story of Temudjin and Borte was lovely.

Is there going to be a sequel? I would love to see it.

The story was interesting yet very simple and straight forward. Good visuals, the acting is okay and i liked how the movie was filmed. Not sure about Camilla Belle though,i think they could of found someone more suitable for the role,i dont think she pulled it off very good. I really hope there is going to be a sequel.

The Young Victoria
Recommended by scottydgibbs.

I had no desire to watch this movie BUT wow!!! It was amazing.

The Young Victoria is a beautiful movie. It was nice to see a young Queen Victoria for a change, usually tv shows and movies about her focus on the older Victoria. Emily Blunt shined in the leading role, she was perfect and the costumes were stunning. A great drama and a touching romance that showed us the chemistry between Victoria and Albert. I even had a little cry at the end because it was so touching.

Look out for Princess Beatrice who makes a brief appearance.

100 Feet (2008,  R)
100 Feet
Recommended by scottydgibbs.

Really want to see it because Ed Westwick is in it,swoon.

Update - I was expecting 100 Feet to be rubbish and was only really watching it to perv on Ed Westwick but 100 Feet turned out to be one of the best ghost stories i have seen in ages.

Whilst being beat up,again,by her husband Marnie Watson flips, grabs a knife and stabs him to death. After a period of time in prison Marnie is granted early release from but she must stay in her home fitted with an electronic security bracelet under house arrest for the next year. Marnies husband had been a cop so outside of Marnies house sits her husbands ex partner who is hoping to catch Marnie outside of the house so he can throw her back into prison. A year under house arrest wouldnt be so bad but Marnies ex-husband Mike is now a bitter evil and twisted ghost intent on making Marnies life hell and so the abuse begins again and unable to leave the house Marnie is trapped.

The acting is good, the storyline is different from other ghost stories and theres quite a bit of gore but not too much. Theres a good atmosphere,i jumped out of my seat in one scene and instead of screaming just once i couldnt stop because it took me by surprise.

100 Feet is a really good horror ghost story, not to be missed.

51
Walled In (2008,  R)
Walled In
Firstly let me say that Mischa Barton really suited this role. Walled In begins with a great opening (sad) scene that gets you into the movie straight away. Most of the movie takes place in a sinister yet interesting building that creates a great closed in claustrophobic vibe for the characters and even the viewers. The building is filled with mystery, secrets, twisted relationships and this all works well to create a really good psychological drama.

Recommended by princessqtpl and NickCoalNoir.

Having cried my eyes out at The Duchess this was probably not a wise choice for my next movie to watch. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas was not what i was expecting, for starters i guessed it was a subtitled movie when infact most of the cast were British and spoke like Eastenders extras.

I do not want to give too much away about the movie but its pulls on your heart, its an amazing example of how innocent young children are and how they view the world around them. This movie made me COL - cry out loud.

Nights in Rodanthe
Nights In Rodanthe was a lovely chilled out relaxing movie. Nice to watch whilst snuggled up on the sofa on a dark Autumn night. The inn is charming and quaint,i wouldnt mind spending a few nights there myself with some good food and a bottle of wine. The Memory Keeper's Daughter
I really want to read the book now. I had no idea that The Memory Keepers Daughter had been made into a movie and i almost missed it infact i missed the first 20 minutes or so and only started watching once the baby girl Phoebe had been given away to the nurse, luckily i had sneakily read the start of the book at work whilst working on the book department so i knew what had happened. I was instantly drawn into the movie,i love it when that happens. It was a great film but very very sad.

Joshua (Joshua: The Devil's Child)
Recommended by JDFortuneFan.

Totally NOT what i was expecting,i was expecting some crappy horror movie (mostly due to the title The Devils Child) but Joshua was an unusual artsy thriller. It was different from all the other evil kids movies,me and my daughter laughed at Joshua's evilness all the way through the movie but the final scene was chilling and worth the wait. He was one evil clever little ****er!

Vera Farmiga must adore evil brats because after this she went on to film Orphan.
