Eastern Promises
David Cronenberg brings us another great movie in recent times, quite similar to A History of Violence not only due to the casting of Viggo Mortensen (in one of the best roles of 2007), but also due to the similar theme which both films share; the loss of identity. Eastern Promises is also an extremely graphic film, well-defined by the "naked bath house" fight sequence. Viewer discretion strongly advised.

Dead Ringers (1988,  R)
Dead Ringers
A departure from Cronenberg's gorier work, but a successful exploration of paranoia between identical twins played brilliantly by Jeremy Irons (why have so many Cronenberg roles been snubbed by the Oscars?). I found that the only squeamishly gory moment is completely unnecessary -- and only serves to remind us that we are watching a David Cronenberg movie --but it does not detract from what is otherwise a tremendously fascinating psychological thriller.

The Fly (1986,  R)
The Fly
The most disgusting movie in the world. Made me physically ill after viewing.
5
The Brood (1979,  R)
The Brood
A very strange and tense horror film. The onscreen bloodshed might come across as "tame" by modern standards, but it's the conversations between Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar that account for much of the creepiness. The Brood doesn't manage to carry as much emotional weight as Cronenberg's other movies, but the performances are quite good.

Scanners (1981,  R)
Scanners
A neat concept well made by David Cronenberg, with no shortage of good gore effects and a lot of destruction. The plot is a bit too complicated, but has some neat ideas that make this movie one of a kind. Most problematic would have to be the choice of Stephen Lack as the lead, who is clearly overshadowed by the much more talented Michael Ironside.
