Volver (2006,  R)
Volver
I am now intriged by Pedro Almodóvar's work and intend to work my way through this list.

This is by far my favourite role for Penelope Cruz, who has always been an actress I can take or leave. Her role as a hard working Mum on the poverty line and coping with a series of events causing just a little bit of chaos, which take several twists and turns.

A totally original piece and one I certainly recommend

Blow (2001,  R)
Blow
The rise and fall life story of George Jung, well played by Jonny Depp. An interesting account of the Cocaine Entrepeneur's life style during that era and the meaning of his life when things go wrong.
3
Vanilla Sky (2001,  R)
Vanilla Sky
A most bizarre and intriging film by Cameron Crowe which is very unique and unpredictable and certainly benefits from multiple watchings to fit the pieces together.

Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (Permanent Midnight) (1999,  R)
Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (Permanent Midnight)
I hadn't realised that Vanilla Sky had been a remake when I'd watched it, but shortly into this film, it became very familiar.

Interestingly Peneleope Cruz plays the same role in both versions of the film and the similarities do not end there, as pretty much the whole film is like for like, just on a smaller scaled budget.

I always find a remake interesting when it originates from a different language.
5
Gothika (2003,  R)
Gothika
A film that isn?t highly rated by most, but remains to be one of my favourites and most re-watched films that I own.

Gothika has the dark creepy atmosphere, which is maintained throughout the film and a storyline which urges you to feel the frustration of the main characters, played by Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz.

Admittedly it has it?s clichéd moments and it?s not without predictability, but it?s certainly worth watching (in my opinion) if you enjoy supernatural Thrillers.

'Behind Blue Eyes' became one of my favourite songs after watching this film.
6
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother) (1999,  R)
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother)
Another ?plucked from nowhere? story from Almodovar. Although this is a well known title, I didn?t feel this was quite as good as the other couple I have seen so far, yet just as unpredictable and again we really get to know the characters well throughout the story.

Another original piece.

I never found Penelope Cruz very impressive until I started watching her work in Spanish films, here you see her shine above other Actors and she is much more impressive, certainly more humble and part of a more authentic kind of film making.
