A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Probably one of the most original films ever made and certainly one of the most controversial in it?s day and still today.

A Clockwork Orange has a very surreal outlook on life with the storyline being narrated by the main character played by Malcolm McDowell. He is the leader of a non conforming gang of thugs, who spend their time playing by their own rules, conflicting violence robbery and rape on the innocent, in contrast there is a gimpse of culture as the boys listen to Beethoven and speak with poetic tones and often in a peculiar dialect.

The journey this film travels in, splits between consequences of actions and a bizarre tale of experimental behaviour control.

McDowell?s character has become something of a cult icon and was no doubt an impressive early performance by the star. (In addition you may notice a unrecognisable Warren Clarke, also in the gang).

Gangster No. 1 (2000,  R)
Gangster No. 1
Great perfromances by Paul Bettany and Malcolm McDowell sharing the lead role as younger and older versions of a psychotic gangester.

Quite a different angle from most British Grangster films and is really aimed at the obsession of becoming the top dog at any cost.

VERDICT: If you like your ganster style films, then this is one that needs to be on your list. If you're sensitvie to strong language, give this film a wide birth.

Evilenko (2004,  Unrated)
Evilenko
A sinister and gruesome tale based on a true story, well played by Malcolm McDowell. The film starts off with some pretty realistic, uncomfortable viewing which actually brings the reality into this story. It does seem to go on a while and some of the acting (with the exception of McDowell) wasn?t all that good.

Certainly worth a watch if you find this genre interesting, however it was a little drawn out.

If.... (1968,  Unrated)
If....
It was clear to see Malcolm McDowell shine through against the rest of the cast here and I'm sure this film helped launch McDowell's career into some pretty controversial roles, however I found the whole film pretty dull and pretty to watch with quite a pointless plot.

I have a feeling I might be in a minority here with my rating here.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (2004,  R)
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
Utterly boring! It shows no sign of excitement until more than half way through. The best part of the film is definitely near the end.

    8TH MARCH 2009

Malcolm McDowell isn't afraid to take on controversial roles, as is evident in his filmography. I've not seen nearly enough films to rate him as an Actor yet, so I'm sure he's going to work his way up through my Actor's ranking in the near future.
