Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
Will always be the benchmark for sci fi movies of its time. A certifiable classic. 100%
2
King Kong (2005,  PG-13)
King Kong
What can i say. Peter Jackson wins again. It is obvious this man has a love of movies..the interest never wains in this 3 hr flick. Naomi Watts is just beautiful.
3
Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
Creepy, aweinspiring, edge of seat effects. What a great story, and the twist at the end is gut wrenching. One of Jake Ghyllenhaal's best moments.
4
Hamlet (1996,  PG-13)
Hamlet
Kenneth Brannagh is a genius for bringing the Bard to life. In this case Hamlet is alive and kicking, all actors doing a fine job. The 4 hour running time allows the play to breathe, and Shakespeare's language to truly shine.
5
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.) (1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
In a word - sublime. Tells a gritty and sad tale of a faded star and her toy boy - a tale that ends in tragedy. Get ready for that close up!!
6
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005,  PG)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
An absolute joy. Johnny Depp shines as the wacky Willy Wonka. This is possibly closer in style to how the author wrote the book, and that can only be a bonus.
7
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
Johnny Depp is just a scream here as Jack Sparrow. Everyone seems to be having a ball here, and it works, because I really enjoyed this movie. Top marks here.
8
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Possibly the darkest yet of the movies released, see Harry fight his inner demons as well as his nemesis. Kept me on the edge of my seat!!
9
Superman (1978,  PG)
Superman
Christopher Reeve will remain the ultimate Superman. He is the epitomy of strength and inner courage. The 2 sequels that followed also were worthy of the original, though lost some of the steam..still..a lot of fun to watch.
10
Psycho (1960,  R)
Psycho
Hitchcock has to be one of the masters of cinema. He knows how to make a great thriller. Janet Leigh and Antony Perkins are fabby. Very creepy and suspenseful at the same time. Leaves the 1998 copy cat for dead.
11
Moulin Rouge! (2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
Ace!!
A fantastic fantasy musical that takes us through the dark underbelly of the mouilin rouge. Ewan and Nicole..simply wonderful.
12
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The whole trilogy is the winner here. Peter Jackson has lovingly brought to life one of the hardest books to bring to the big screen. Well deserved awards and accolades. Go Frodo!!
13
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
Being the middle piece doesnt bring this down at all. It keeps the pace going, and keeps the story moving without losing its audience. Compelling and moving, as with the other 2!!
14
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King
Just awe inspiring. The whole trilogy wins with me, it has restored my faith in movie making. This is what movies are supposed to be....tell us a story, and take us to a place we like to be - emotionally and spiritually.
15
Finding Neverland (2004,  PG)
Finding Neverland
Johnny Depp has done it again. He has the knack for finding the right movies. This is a knockout. Loved this from start to finish.
16
Bend It Like Beckham (2003,  PG-13)
Bend It Like Beckham
A great coming of age/clash of culture flick. The two female leads are bright and spunky, and bring a freshness to the story, which helps move it along nicely. Nice mix of comedy/drama, with a happy ending that doesnt get drowned in saccharine. Perfect.
17
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Just pure escapism. Loved every minute of it. Kinda fond of Mr Tumnus though..hehe.
18
E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (1982,  PG)
E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial
Remains a favourite after 24 years, though possibly is a little dated by now, but still good fun to watch every now and again.
19
The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix
Certainly is one of Keanu Reeves' defining cinematic moments. A great fantasy adventure which is up there with Star Wars and the like. Fast paced, amazing special effects, and the use of Sydney landmarks throughout all add up to a great movie.
20
Serenity (2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
From the creator of Buffy and Angel comes this witty sci-fi adventure. Well balanced, well produced, and tightly paced, Serenity wins on all counts.
21
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) (2001,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone)
Every Harry Potter movie deserves to be a classic. Well made, coherent, and enough action and pizazz to keep us watching. Daniel Radcliffe will probably never be able to shake off his Harry role, but that could be a good thing. Hehe
22
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The next in the series once again is completely enjoyable from start to finish. Each of the characters are starting to develop, and the story is drawing us in each time. Brilliant.
23
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
This is where the series starts to head into darker territory, yet keeps us entertained at the same time. Great to see the three core characters developing still as they grow up in each consecutive year. Hermione packs a neat punch in this episode...Go Hermione!!
24
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
The sparks fly between Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando in this movie about class and desire. Marlon is all at once sexy and intense, the final scenes pack an emotional punch. Based on Tennessee William's classic play of the same name. A classic of great proportions.
25
Out of Africa (1985,  PG)
Out of Africa
From the spectacular opening scene, Out of Africa astounds. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are well matched in this celluloid reading of Karen Blixen's autobiography. Well paced even for its length...the cinematography is perfect.
26
Much Ado About Nothing (1993,  PG-13)
Much Ado About Nothing
Great version of another Shakespeare classic. Kenneth Branagh knows how to bring Shakespeare to life. This lighthearted romp is a favourite among Shakespeare fans, and the ensemble cast bring it all into focus. It's good to see a mix of stage and Hollywood names mix together.
27
Troy (2004,  R)
Troy
Brad Pitt is not the reason for this movie being a hit, its our very own Eric Bana. This period action flick is all good clean fun. Lots of action and politics in this retelling of The Iliad, if not with poetic license, but the cinematography in this makes up for any historical faux pas made. Great if you feel like an "epic".
28
The Blob (1958,  Unrated)
The Blob
Classic horror movie with all the right ingredients. Probably more funny than scary now, but back then, this would have been the ultimate in fear.
29
Calamity Jane (1953,  G)
Calamity Jane
Good ole Doris Day. This is just a great rollicking fun piece of film. The songs are well known, especially Secret Love (I think everyone knows this song!) Bit of a rehash of Annie Get Your Gun, but hey...its stands on its own, and will be a favourite for me.
30
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry does it again with this explosive 6th instalment. We are taken to a darker place this time round....with the ever encroaching feeling that more is yet to come in the finale. I was hooked from the very start, and the newer additions to Harry's circle are certainly adding colour to the mix, especially Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley. Cannot wait for the final double shot next year.
