No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
The textbook definition of a thriller. It is perfectly executed and has a tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The lack of music and the empty scenery add to a fantastic story. The strongest film of the year in regards to quality and awards. |

The Departed (2006, R)
A definite must-see. Leonardo DiCaprio once again shows why he is one of the best in the business as Police rat Billy Costigan. During the film it is hard to keep track of the amount of people he beats the shit out of but it is all good. Matt Damon finally shakes his good guy image and plays a downright jerk as Colin Sullivan, the mob's mole. Then there are the other actors: Jack Nicholson shines as usual and plays the sickly demented Frank Costello, Mark Whalberg rocks as Dignam, Martin Sheen is a classic good cop and Alec Baldwin is downright hilarious. This film is amazing and I would agree that it is probably Scorsese's best since Goodfellas. A powerful contender for Oscars this year. After watching it again, I once again realize what a masterpiece it is. |
