No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men 5.0 Stars
The textbook definition of a thriller. It is perfectly executed and has a tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The lack of music and the empty scenery add to a fantastic story. The strongest film of the year in regards to quality and awards.
Second viewing: The film is even better the second time through. This is when you pay attention to the loads of detail in the images. How the Coens speak multitudes through their visuals. I am still trying to decipher Tommy Lee Jones final speech. A haunting film.

The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed 5.0 Stars
A definite must-see. Leonardo DiCaprio once again shows why he is one of the best in the business as Police rat Billy Costigan. During the film it is hard to keep track of the amount of people he beats the shit out of but it is all good. Matt Damon finally shakes his good guy image and plays a downright jerk as Colin Sullivan, the mob's mole. Then there are the other actors: Jack Nicholson shines as usual and plays the sickly demented Frank Costello, Mark Whalberg rocks as Dignam, Martin Sheen is a classic good cop and Alec Baldwin is downright hilarious. This film is amazing and I would agree that it is probably Scorsese's best since Goodfellas. A powerful contender for Oscars this year. After watching it again, I once again realize what a masterpiece it is.

American Beauty 4.5 Stars
The central idea of the film is that there is beauty in the mundane; beauty in ordinary life that most people can't appreciate. A great film that really engages the mind of the viewer.

Very good movie with great action sequences yet containing weird dream sequences and Mel Gibson with long-red hair is hard to take seriously. Awesome movie though.

A great film that shows the breakdown of man into beasts. War is truly the great destroyer and this film only emphasized that.

A very strong murder mystery. Poiter and Steiger's performances are exceptional. This movie is not overtly preachy. Although the message is a strong component of the film, it is handled very nicely.

A delightful film. Bitingly satirical, sweetly romantic and utterly hilarious. Wilder's direction is top-notch, and Jack Lemmon creates one of the most likable characters in movie history. They don't make comedies like this anymore.
