The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
best scorcese film ever. unbelievable. youre enthraled through the entire story. dicaprio is already one of my favorites, but this is one of his best performances, he was brillliant. damons performance is overlooked and the end is shocking and suprising, even disturbing really. i havent stopped thinking about this film since i watched it, nearly perfect.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
jack nicholson in possibly his finest performance. the film works because jack works, but he is so good that this ranks up there as one of the all time classics in the history of film. the first two hours are fun, witty, charming, and heart warming. the film ends by spiriling into chaos that is both shocking and powerful. deserving of its sweep of the big 5 oscars, one of the best films of 1975 and one of my favorites of all time.
3
The Shining (1980,  R)
The Shining
im not sure that the word "epic" should ever be used to describe a horror film, but if it was this would be the film to apply it to. easily one of the smartest and scariest films ever made despite that fact that King, who authored the source material, didnt like the film. the cinematography was outstanding, with epic landscapes and larger than life shots of the hotel and the production of some of the most memorable and iconic images ever captured in a movie. nicholson puts in one of his best performances and the slow pacing gives off a haunting feel. the only thing keeping this film from perfection in my mind was the reality of how warped the story really was. despite the films genius and effectiveness, as a family man i had a hard time enjoying a film about a good dad that tries to murder his family after a bout with insanity. despite this, the shining is possibly the greatest horror film ever made.

Chinatown (1974,  R)
Chinatown
this really is a sensational film. done in the noir style that brings back memories of the maltese falcon, the mystery was well plotted and the story well told. the twists were alot of fun and the acting was superb across the board. the only thing keeping me from giving this film a higher score is the dissapointing way the film closed. the final 10 minutes sort of fell through the bottom of the rest of the film. in many ways the film had to end that way to provide a context for why nicholson's character has bad feelings about chinatown, but the fittingness of the end doesnt take away the sting of its silliness and anti-climatic nature. still overall truly great and understandably considered one of the great films in history.

The Bucket List (2007,  PG-13)
The Bucket List
this was a wonderful movie with great characters and perfect diologue. seeing these two hollywood icons on the screen together was a treat and the film helps you rethink life in a similar way to kurosawa's great film ikiru. a must see.

Batman (1989,  PG-13)
Batman
although i grew up with this film being one of my absolute favorites, as ive gotten older and the film has gotten older it clearly hasnt aged that well but is still a whole lot of fun to watch. ill always like keaton and jack is one of my favorites of all time, but the film now feels a bit too campy this far after its release. ive seen the film a dozen times and will always love it, and im sure i will continue to watch it every few years or so.

A Few Good Men (1992,  R)
A Few Good Men
although the film is a bit melodramatic for my tastes, it is a great example of the courtroom drama genre. jack is intense as always even though he seemed to mail in some of his scenes, and its one of those films that isnt overly memorable but deserves to be seen and respected.
8
Easy Rider (1969,  R)
Easy Rider
i have never understood the affinity for this film. its horrible. i understand it was original for its time and that some cool things were done that were never tried before, but the movie is still awful. beyond awful. i dont think its a stretch to call this the most overrated film in the history of the world. i have a hard time thinking of any "classic" that is more inconsequential than this one.
