Actors: Al Pacino
Based on performance in the movie alone, not just overall quality.
The guy's a living legend, no matter how you put it - starring in some of the greatest movies ever made will do that for you. It's almost like there's two different bodies of work here: '70s Pacino and '90s-and-on Pacino. He's known equally for his more subtle, nuanced performances in The 'Godfather' series and 'Dog Day Afternoon' as he is in his more-recent over-the-top fair like 'Heat,' 'Scent of a Woman,' and even the godawful 'Devil's Advocate,' he makes it watchable. Regardless of that fact, he has one of the fullest bodies of work of any modern actor and is always a thrill to watch.

Scent of a Woman (1992, R)
An otherwise unremarkable "mentor teaching the young guy the ways of the world" movie made memorable by Pacino's award-winning performance. Sure, it ain't the best he's ever done, but he keeps this bloated fair worth watching. Look out for a young Philip Seymour Hoffman as one of the prep school punks, too. |

Again, this could be terrible, but why, if you're fans of both De Niro and Pacino, would you not want to see them on-screen together again, even if they're in the twilight of their careers? Even if the movie sucks, they'll make it watchable based on personality alone - Pacino's done it with 'The Devil's Advocate' and De Niro's done it with something as abysmal as 'Showtime.' |
