Mo' Better Blues (1990, R)
what an incredible movie. i dont care for spike lee's themes of racial distinction in most of his films, and some of it that was present in this film were annoying, but this film was too brilliant not to love. it has quickly become one of my favorite movies of all time. i tried to identify wether this was a film about love or music, and then i realized its not about either, its a memoir of a musician. i think i like this film more than most for musical reasons and not film reasons, because im such a HUGE jazz fan, but the movie was well made and well acted. the diologue and ending were not typical rehearsed hollywood, they were genuine. many scenes were pointless and didnt further the plot at all, and in this film it was a good thing. it made the characters more real. denzel was incredible as usual, but the entire cast with the exception of indigo was chosen perfectly. the music scenes were really great and because i know jazz, i know that the things that happen to denzels character in this film happen to jazz musicians all the time. i may not always care for spike lee, but he did a wonderful job on this film. |

Deja Vu (2006, PG-13)
fantastic film. a sci-fi set in contemporary time about people who can see the past as its happening. i know that doesnt make sense, how can you see something thats already happened as its happening, you just have to watch the film. denzel takes this film to a level it probably couldnt have reached with another actor, and jim caviezel plays a great bad guy. you really have to think this film through for it to make sense, but when enough thought is put to it i dont see how anyone could not think of this film as fantastic. |

The Great Debaters (2007, PG-13)
an amazing film without question. let me start with my disclaimer, this film needed to be perfect just to get 4 stars from me because denzel admitted to knowingly and willfully changing major facts in this story for the purpose of manufacturing extra "inspiration". I am strongly against this practice in films based on true stories. if the story is worth telling, tell it the way it happened, if you need to change the story too much then its not worth telling. since he changed the story so much the film needed to be 5 star material just to get 4 stars, and it was. the acting on every front was absolutely phenomenal, the story despite the inaccuracies was beautiful, and the film was shot well and very engaging. one of the best films of 2007 despite its flaws. |

The Pelican Brief (1993, PG-13)
this is really a great film. i heard a lot of people say that it was boring but i couldnt disagree more, i was into this film every step of the way. the scene in the parking garage towards the end was stupid and there is a slight flaw in the way parts of the story were constructed, but it was a great flick. normally i would rave about denzel, and he is great in this flick, but julia roberts was amazing in this film. she pulled emotions, facial expressions, and reactions that were great. she played the heck out of this role. really good movie. |

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009, R)
surprisingly this is a strong 3 1/2 and ive thought about scoring it higher. it might be that denzel is my favorite living actor and that i have loved his past collaborations with tony scott, but despite this film having a few glaring flaws i really enjoyed watching this film. the exchanges between each of the characters were engaging and the simple plot was executed well. a solid summer film. |

The Siege (1998, R)
this is an excellent movie. denzel does a great job as usual of taking a decent movie and making it better with his on screen presence and the plot was great. tony shaloub was also cool and him being middle eastern as an FBI agent in a movie were the bad guys are all middle eastern was a cool dynamic. great movie. |

Philadelphia (1993, PG-13)
I had a hard time enjoying this film. it was very slow, many scenes were twice as long as they needed to be, and the performances were were average. tom hanks won an oscar for this film, but it seems that he must have won because the part was brave and contraversal, not because he had to do anything as an actor that went above and beyond. the court room scenes were less than dramatic or dazzling, which in some ways was probably very realistic, but it wasnt entertaining. i was expecting a powerful film because this film is considered a milestone for both hanks and denzel, but i was pretty bored. when the film is over, you still dont really even know who was right, you do not get any indication at the end if justice was served. did they really fire hank's character because of AIDS, i wish i knew. thats the sort of thing a film should let you in on. |

License to Kill (1984, Unrated)
what a nearly unwatcheable movie. i understand that this was a made for TV movie from the mid 80's but its really terrible. Denzel gets the lead bill on the box because of who he is today, but he's not in more than 20 minutes of this movie. its basically an after school special about why people shouldnt drink and drive. its long and slow. the only good thing was that it made me think about the horrors of losing a kid, and the script was done realistically in that regard. |
