Casablanca (1943,  Unrated)
Casablanca
"of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she had to walk into mine." what a perfect movie. i just saw this for the fourth time and it was the best viewing yet. this film is cluttered with wonderful qoutes, great diologue, and an incredible plot. bogey and bergman are larger than life in this film and the rest of the actors really shine. i have read many critics reviews of this film and some try to think of something critical to say for the sake of being objective, in reality criticizing this film is futile. many consider this to be one of the top five films and unlike others in the top five, i can raise no objections here. this is easily one of the greatest films ever made without exception. as ebert once said, this is probably the most well recieved and reviewed film ever made and it deserves its aclaim. "heres lookin at you kid."

The Big Sleep (1946,  Unrated)
The Big Sleep
another of the many astounding films featuring humphrey bogart. hawks directing job was great as he handled the difficult and involved script as well as anyone could have. the story was great, reminding me a lot of the maltese falcon but maybe even slightly better. i was intrigued the whole way through, and this is one of those rare films that leaves you completely satisfied without a criticism. amazing movie.
3
The Maltese Falcon (1941,  Unrated)
The Maltese Falcon
definitely one of the best films of all time. classic noir with great performances and a perfect plot. the twists and turns were intriguing and the payoff at the end following all of the mystery was incredible. there were no holes in this one and the characters were consistent and well developed despite their simple purposes. a truly great piece of film history.
4
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938,  Unrated)
Angels with Dirty Faces
easily one of the most underrated gangster films ever made. rarely listed amung the classics, this picture see's a young bogart and a young cagney go head to head in a match of criminal thinking. o'brien is very good as the priest, and the dichotomy that is built between his character and cagneys is powerful. two friends with everything in common go in opposite directions because of a single moment in their lives, and they couldnt have ended up more different. the acting was great and the moral commentary was carried out perfectly. this was a profound story, admitting that although this life is made easier by dishonest living, that still doesnt make it right. bearing many similarities to two other films, white heat and on the waterfront, this will be a film i rewatch every few years.

To Have and Have Not (1944,  Unrated)
To Have and Have Not
this film is very loosely based on the hemingway novel of the same name. the film is phenomenal, the deviations from hemingways novel were mostly for the better as the novel is my least favorite of the 6 hemingway novels i have read, and even hemigway admitted that without the story changes the novel would have never made a good movie. this was a good movie, hawks direction was great and bogart was casual but commanding. bogarts performance was effortless, like he walked in off the street and threw down some attitude for two hours and called it a day, while at the same time he was incredible. he brings films to a new level they couldnt reach without him. great flick.
6
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948,  Unrated)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
this is a phenomenal film. a tale of greed and paranoia, this film creatively chronicles the journey of three gold prospectors who begin as friends. greed grips one of the men and everything falls apart as you see him drop into insanity. huston won an acting oscar for his role, and he deserved it, but bogart really pulled of a great performance in this film. he started off as the focus of the film as an incredibly likeable character and by the end he becomes brash, unreasonable, and hated. a great film that accomplishes its task of showing greed for what it is. a timeless film.
7
The Roaring Twenties (1939,  Unrated)
The Roaring Twenties
another gangster classic that delivers. cagney was great as eddie bartlett and bogart plays a very convincing villian. although the film skips through the process of barletts rise to prominence, the story still flows well and satisfies as a rise and fall gangster story. great film.
8
Across the Pacific (1942,  Unrated)
Across the Pacific
bogey and greenstreet work well together once again in this excellent tale of intrigue. the twists are great and the story is told well in what is an underrated classic helmed by the great john huston.
9
Passage to Marseille (1944,  Unrated)
Passage to Marseille
curtiz reunites with 4 cast members from casablanca and the result is an excellent one. although the scope of this war film might have been a bit too small, the film had intrigue and solid performances as well as a great story. wonderful film.
10
Sahara (1943,  Unrated)
Sahara
a unique and inventive war film, a bit slow on the uptake but an ending that sets the stage for many other war films like it. entertaining characters and interesting dialogue make for a highly recommended and excellent film.
11
High Sierra (1941,  Unrated)
High Sierra
although in the shadow of another great film in which bogart starred in the same year, high sierra was a pleasant suprise for me. most of the supporting actors werent actually that good, but the story was engaging, bogey was terrific as always, and the end of the film was perfect. its not often that a film is effective enough to get me rooting for the bad guy, but roy earl is as selfish as a gangster could be and is sympathetic at the same time. an underrated but worthwhile classic film.
12
The Petrified Forest (1936,  Unrated)
The Petrified Forest
a very diologue driven gangster picture that delivers. the acting was very good and the story well told despite the fact that it was incredibly simple. the entire film essentially takes place on a single set and no "event" really takes place throughout the film, but the diologue was poetic. i just had a really good time watching people talk for 80 minutes, and the fate of these well planned characters really mattered to me. great movie.
13
Key Largo (1948,  Unrated)
Key Largo
this is a good movie. bogart and robinson deliver performances that are a little too typical, bogart playing his normal existentialist and robinson his normal gangster, but it wasnt a movie about performances. it was a solid story and a good escape into something meant to be simple and entertaining. overall worth seeing.
14
The Caine Mutiny (1954,  Unrated)
The Caine Mutiny
this is a pretty solid film. it was a shadow of what i expected, being slow, simple, and without intensity for a film about a mutiny. but the performances were solid and it was entertaining. overall a pretty solid film.
