Superman (1978, PG)
christopher reeve was and always will be the definate superman, fitting the role perfectly, not only superman him self, but his alter ego, clerk kent, perfectly capturing a bumbling news reporter with a secret, a epic story, from his birth to his arival in smallvile, to his life in metropolis, a great origin movie, shows how they must be done, gene hackman is also a great casting choice as lex luther, a good little story going on, john williams score is terrific, with one of the best opening credits ever, maybe even beating williams own starwars. they boosted you will see a man fly, and they delivered there promise, yes it might lok dated by today standerds, but, holds up well, watch carefully the vilains punished at beginning, as they are main focus for villains in superman 2, a exellent sequel to a exellent super hero film, |

War of the Worlds (2005, PG-13)
im gonna defend this film, remake of the 50s film of same name, but transported from victorian england to america, tom cruise stars as a father looking after his kids, when a alien invasion takes place, and they go on the run. spielberg is on fire here, ever since saving private ryan, hes got a new look which is great, and its on show here, the first attack by aliens, is amazing killing everything in its way the tripods make there way, through the town and cruise with kids escape, this scene really grabs you, shot in a realistic way, and after this it doesent let up, a basement sequence, a great river crossing where aliens attack again, and the panic building up to it again superb, a great basement sequence again involving tim robbins, and a last act giving nods to the original version, like signs, this is alien invasion, seen through the eyes of a family. spielberg does summer blockbusters the best in the last so many years, a.i and minority report, before this, loe the bleached out look he does nowadays, and this film isc definatly commentating on events during and after 9.11. |

The War of the Worlds (1953, G)
50s paranoia of communism, spawn panic not just in corridors of power in washington, but the film industry, and this was one of many films coming out swapping comunists with space aliens, nd making great nd entertaining films while there at it, based on famous book, orson welles also did a great hoax reading it on the radio. martians invade america, with devastating afect, and its up to the militery and scientists to stop them, well made, really gripping in a 50s kinda way, and a major influence, joe dante shows up on dvd commentery. anyone whos seen spielbergs/cruise version, will testifi there diferent films, spielbergs being more personal, and family based, but this film being more focused with scientific explanations, a great sci film, everyone shold watch |
