Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle)
"A heart is a heavy burden. "

This movie will be sure to delight Anime lovers of all ages. Funny and wildly imaginative at times, delving in a magical world with the use of fantastic characters and lush scenery, all add to the movie's appeal. It isn't too silly for its own good or overly dramatic like some other Anime. Featuring the voice talents of Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Jean Simmons, Billy Crystal, and Emily Mortimer.

Porco Rosso (Kurenai no buta) (2003,  PG)
Porco Rosso (Kurenai no buta)
"A pig's gotta fly."

The equally beloved and despised bounty hunter, Porco Rosso--once known as Marco--transforms into a pig, who snorts when he laughs. Think Babe, but as a much older, chain-smoking, womanizing, aviator extraordinare. The story, which is set after WWI and alternates between France and Italy, radiates of love, honor, and friendship. Simply put, this is yet another Miyazaki masterpiece.

The Simpsons Movie (2007,  PG-13)
The Simpsons Movie
The Simpsons, in all their yellow glory, have arrived on the big screen and the result is a fantastically average one.

Suffers from a few recycled jokes from past episodes, a so-so environmental themed plot and a less than stellar second half. I was hoping to see Principal Skinner, Side Show Bob and Apu especially get more screen time. Instead, I got Green Day and Tom Hanks. Slightly disappointing there. I will say my favorite scene was the Spidey-pig bit; sheer gold.

As for the length of the movie, it plays more like an extended episode rather than a feature length film. Overall, a satisfactory time.

Kumo no mukô, yakusoku no basho (The Place Promised in Our Early Days)
At times very beautiful, and at other times very slow and almost boring. A melancholy drama that comes up a bit short, could've been stronger. The characters (as with Shinkai's 'Voices of a Distant Star') are separated by an obstacle that interferes with their love lives. I felt as though he took a similar theme (a life altering moment that is never forgotten) and for this film stretched it out to 90 minutes. Liked it, didn't love it.

Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina
More action packed than the first one, but as a whole I prefer the first installment much more. Still very entertaining on its own, with kick ass fighting scenes and beautiful animation.

WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
I was very surprised by this movie. The first half of this movie plays out like a silent film with almost no dialogue between Wall-E and Eve, which might seem like a downside, but it's actually quite nice and refreshing. It relies heavily on subtle visual clues that may be a bit much for kids. A deprived Wall-E has been alone for so long that when he finally finds a mysterious and sweet companion, Eve, he is overwhelmed. I just loved Eve! Wall-E's simple, idealized view of romance with Eve was very well done. And the soundtrack, which includes "La Vie en Rose" sung by Louis Armstrong was magnificently utilized. The message of the movie is much more mature - its broader social commentaries about that state of the Earth, people's certain lifestyles, and technology's impact on our methods of communication. This is more than what we've seen from previous Pixar films.
