The Abyss (1989,  PG-13)
The Abyss
beautifully filmed actioner underwater. mad marines, curious aliens and ed harris in a very deep trench! the ending is daft and i have never figured out why mary elizabeth mastrantonio is so hated by the crew cos she's really nice!

6
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984,  PG)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
a beautifel story of an innocent girl in a big world. some of the best use of computer effects in modern film that enhances the story rather than take it over - jeunet has a magic eye in all his work. oh and if any laydee's out there are anything like amelie, drop me a line!

Apocalypse Now
one of the reasons i bought a surround sound system - visually dynamic and aurally stimulating - with excellent performances from all involved.
30
Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
From the first minutes of animal killings, rape, cruel torture, beheadings, anxiety and sickening gory violence - I watched it praying for it to end.

I would have turned it off if not for a friend's high praise.

I can't stomach any kind of cruelty to animals, even if they're clearly visual effects, so I particularly despised the bashing to death of the Jaguar.

I laughed out loud at the arrival of the Spaniards at the end too, and couldn't help but be reminded of 'Predator' through several key scenes.
31
Apollo 13 (1995,  PG)
Apollo 13
bacon! paxman! hanks! sinise! harris! - great true story too.

41
Azumi (2003,  Unrated)
Azumi
Kicked arse big time, with beautiful camera work, amazing choreographed action scenes, moving characterisation and a drop dead gorgeous leading lady.

I know that the film is based on a comic, but I havent heard if its any good - does anyone know?

The final 40 minutes of the film - after Azumi's lesbian dalliance - are simply superb.

The androgynous bad guy is impressive too.

Bad Education (La Mala educación) (2004,  NC-17)

46
Nabbeun namja (Bad Guy) (2001,  Unrated)
Nabbeun namja (Bad Guy)
A tough gangland leader experiences love at first sight when he encounters a young college student in a crowd. With no concern for public conduct, or the desires of the girl, he forces himself upon her and kisses her in front of her boyfriend. Totally unapologetic, the man is beaten by police and left disgraced.

Desperate to see her again, the man decides to return to the same place. Soon, the student re-appears and she and her boyfriend go on a window shopping trip. However, her desperate lack of money leads her to commit an unfortunate crime, for which her victim demands an uncompromising, pre-planned punishment: She must work as a prostitute to pay the money back. And it is the man who fell in love with her in the crowd that day that will be responsible for taking care of her

Dark, daring and brutal, this twisted tale from the director of The Isle challenges romantic ideals and breaks with conventional notions of love to deliver one of the most powerful and controversial films of recent years.

Blues Brothers 2000
better than it has any right to be.
82
Blue Velvet (1986,  R)
Blue Velvet
one of the darkest films i know. dennis hopper rips the tits off the screen in this, kyle and isabella give amazing nuanced performances and david lynch adds that magic that only he can. i have never worked out why dalmations and fire engines go together so well.
83
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006,  R)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Very funny scenes throughout, but it was felt like a 90 minute sketch show. Nick Broomfield is sent up in fine style though.
84
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957,  PG)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Having only seen this on TV and DVD, I was totally jonesed to get to see a 70mm print at my local cinema. Wow 50 years old and still the cats pyjamas, despite rewriting history!
85
The Brothers Grimm (2005,  PG-13)
The Brothers Grimm
Terry Gilliam makes this film look stunning, but the over the top acting needed restraining. Monica Bellucci is as ever, amazing.
86
The Cable Guy (1996,  PG-13)
The Cable Guy
Under appreciated darker than dark comedy with Jim Carrey on top form, Mathew Broderick underplaying as ever, cameos from a skinny Jack Black, George Segal and serving wench Janeane Garofalo - "There were no utensils in medieval times, hence there are no utensils AT Medieval Times. Would you like a refill on that Pepsi?... There were no utensils but there was Pepsi? "
The karoake scene with the Jefferson Airplane song is just too funny
87
Casino Royale (2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
Think of it as Bond - Year One. His character is built up throughout the film, before tearing him to shreds and leaving you in no doubt about why he becomes the Bond we all know from all the other films - ruthless, tough and treating women so badly.
Daniel Craig was excellent, portraying an incredible physically menacing presence, Fleming's 'thug in a dinner jacket' we're never more true, before showing his more sensitive side. Every hit, punch and roll makes you wince for him - and those piercing blue eyes can convey so much without a word being spoken, the mark of a truly great actor.
On the downside, it had more endings than Return of the King and as such over stayed its welcome by about 15 minutes, the card playing scenes didnt quite have me on the edge of my seat, and there is a total rip off from Stagecoach/Raiders of the Lost Ark - that had me rolling my eyes.
Daniel Craig is a great Bond - way better than Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Lazonby. I would seriously rate him against Connery - here's hoping the best is yet to come in future films.
88
Casshern (2004,  Unrated)
Casshern
If I was marking the film on its visual merits alone, then it'd be a 5/5. But it was overlong, boring and now a few hours after watching it, I have forgotten what it was about. It did remind me a lot of a comic called ' The Red Star' though...
89
Cliffhanger (1993,  R)
Cliffhanger
The funniest comedy of the last 10000 years. Flying Stallone just cracks me up, with the amount of liberties this film takes with suspension of belief, I'm surprised that everyone involved didn't develop Pinnochio-esque schnozzers. Entertaining like nothing else if you leave your brain turned off, oh and the trailer for it is outstanding - probably one of the best ever. Seriously.
90
Come and See (Idi i smotri) (1985,  Unrated)
Come and See (Idi i smotri)
Elem Klimov's powerful, mesmerising and dynamic award winning feature has been deservedly hailed as one of the greatest war films ever produced. Set in Soviet Belarus during WWII, the story follows Florya, a newly enlisted innocent partisan, as he staggers dazed and petrified through the merciless horror of the struggle against a cruel German aggressor.
Essentially, the film is a rite of passage and Florya's face physically ages during the progression of the film as he is subjected to ever increasing brutal warfare and maniacal ethnic cleansing, routinely committed by the German forces.
The film's title is derived from the Book of Revelation and its call for witnesses to 'come and see' the carnage and devastation wrought by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The imagery created by Klimov is stunning and the battle scenes frighteningly realistic: the director actually uses real ammunition during filming for maximum authenticity.
Such brutality shocks to the core and the director's careful attention to style and detail make it all too believeable whilst leaving the audience stunned and bewildered to the very last.

Highly recommended!
91
The Company of Wolves (1984,  R)
The Company of Wolves
Atmospheric and wonderfully evocative fairytale. Some of the special effects havent stood the test of time, but remain watchable if only through the haze of fond memories.
92
Contact (1997,  PG)
Contact
From the opening scene that makes you feel "." that big, tothat uber cool sound design for the signal, by way of impossible camera moves through glass windows and into mirrors, calling in on James Woods at his reptilian best, handsome Bongo Mcconnaughey teaching religiosity to the fuzzy wuzzies, thought provoking ideas and themes and a star turn by Jodie Foster too.
Fine stuff, that even has Donnie Darko's girlfriend in it!
It's been too long since I watched it and I am glad I put time aside for it last night.
Special thanks to the Cool shite clan for reminding me how good it is from their chat on their recent show.
93
Crank (2006,  R)
Crank
Genrebuster's Dan Soler must get the hats off for me renting this in the first place, given his rave review.
It arrived today, and normally my rental's sit, gather dust and then get sent back unwatched but I was determined to watch this one. (the others that arrived today are both Genrebusters recommendations too - The Place Promised in Our Early Days and The Tai Chi Master)
What an insane film! I loved it.
Even though it's kinetic energy could so easily have been represented by wobbly handicam action, the directors do an incredible job of making the film look frenetic without the viewer losing their lunch.
Jason Statham running with a hospital gown on and a stiffy had me laughing out loud too, not the only moment of hilarity in the film.
Even the ending was not a let down, as is so often the case with Hollywood films.
94
Dazed and Confused (1993,  R)
Dazed and Confused
1976 ~ The last day of school. Bongs blaze, bell bottoms ring and rock n roll ROCKS! Among the best teen films ever made, Linklater's Dazed & Confused eavesdrops on a group of seniors to be and incoming freshmen. A launching pad for a number or future stars, Linklaters first studio effort also features endlessly quotable dialogue and a blasting, stadium ready soundtrack. Sidestepping nostalgia, Dazed & Confused is less about the best years of our lives than the boredom, angst and excitement of teenagers waiting for something to happen.
95
Domino (2005,  R)
Domino
I know he's flashy and MTV, but i love Tony Scott's work - and even Keira 'lead with her best teeth' Knightley is excellent in this. - 6 frames/second, mad colours, desaturation, hand held stuff and edited into an inch of its life - the man has more tricks up his sleeve than Penn and Teller!
96
La Double Vie de Véronique (The Double Life of Veronique) (1991,  R)
La Double Vie de Véronique (The Double Life of Veronique)
Two physically identical girls, one living in Poland and the other in France are mysteriously linked in more than one respect. Each have musical talents, a weak heart and doubts over their lovers. Although they have never met, when Veronika collapses while performing onstage, Veronique immediately feels her life has changed profoundly...
Kieslowski makes Ridley Scott look like he's directing blindfolded and David Lynch noodling inanely. Effortless control of mood from the sadly missed master.
97
Escape from L.A. (1996,  R)
Escape from L.A.
Listen to the audio commentary www.coolshite.net and this film is not nearly as bad..
98
Freaked (1993,  PG-13)
Freaked
Silly rubber make up and gooey effects heavy tale of an air-head gen x actor who takes the large amount of money to promote a dirty no good large chemical companies products. Hilarity ensues when he is held captive along witha few mates and subjected to a freaky transformation when he is deliberately doused with chemicals (from the company he's working for) by a mad 'freak show' creator.
99
Gallipoli (1981,  PG)
Gallipoli
Lyrical tale from Peter Weir of a naive sprinter and his slightly more worldly wise mate, signing up to go and fight for their country during WWI. Leisurely paced and as the opening says it's more about the journey to the destination than the destination itself. One scene with shells and bullets raining down on swimmers is quite superb. Mel Gibson is one handsome devil too.
100
Garden State (2004,  R)
Garden State
I think that Zach Braff ruined this film for me. I have never seen anything he has been in (scrubs etc) and will be comfortable never to have to sit through anything he's in again - what a total waste of space! and his direction was so 'meh' it left me total underwhelmed and annoyed. however the script he wrote was great, peter sarsgaard was fab and natalie portman can be forgiven for episodes 1 2 and 3! - this film would have benefitted from a director like wes anderson, richard linklater or alexander payne to bring out all those quirky details and performances that this so missed.
101
Girl, Interrupted (1999,  R)
Girl, Interrupted
Buddy movie crossed with One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - all girl cast, with the always delicious and watchable Winona Ryder. It doesn't seem to work though - cliched, montage ridden and overly mawkish and sentimental steering the viewer too forcefully rather than gently taking you by the hand. Whoppi Goldberg is great though.
102
Grizzly Man (2005,  R)
Grizzly Man
Cinemaslave Joe persuaded me to give this a go and I am so pleased that I did. The irony is that the more the 'star' interracts with the wildlife, the less wild they become - trustin man too much perhaps and thus becoming easier prey for poachers. The film was deeply moving, especially the scenes with Herzog listening to the final horrific moments at the camp. Did anyone else think that the pathologist was a creepy guy, seemingly enjoying talking about his grisly duties?
103
Halloween (1978,  R)
Halloween
John Carpenter's homage to Dario Argento. Still mighty fine nearly 30 years later, with beautiful gliding camera work and one of my favourite film scores.
104
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
floppy hair and hormones raging in the continuing saga of 'arry p.
105
The Italian Job (1969,  G)
The Italian Job
Well now. Fulham. Bit dodgy at the moment.
106
Ladies in Lavender (2005,  PG-13)
Ladies in Lavender
Charles Dance directing Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith - it doesn't get much more English than this.
A mysterious Polish castaway drifts onto the shores of the isolated Cornish home of a pair of spinsters sisters.
The pair nurse him to health, Dench's crush on the young man fuelling her fervour for the task and embarrassing her uptight sibling.
This hopeless devotion drives the film's plot and poignancy, especially when her jealousy of a holidaying artist (Natasha McElhone) looks set to interfere with Andrea's future happiness
107
The Last King of Scotland (2006,  R)
The Last King of Scotland
A young recently qualified Dr. decides to do some work in Uganda. Through a series of events he soon remarkably becomes President Amin's personal physician - and confidante. His morals are put to task as the amiable and generous nature of Amin soon crumbles to reveal his true nature...
Well acted and entertaining - especially Forest Whittaker as Amin - but it had some bad cliched moments and an inappropriate 'action' score that took me out of the suspense.
Recommended though.
108
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004,  R)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Maybe it's too quirky for it's own good, but it's just right for me! Bill Murray's 'action' scene is too funny.
109
The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
Emaciated metal worker falls apart, he doesnt eat or sleep and someone is playing post it note Hang man on his fridge.. and who is the big guy in the red car keeping tabs on him? Now with a dead body on his hands it's time for him to come to terms with reality - whatever that is...
110
The Man Who Cried (2000,  R)
The Man Who Cried
Beautifully shot, woodenly acted, underwritten story of a Russian refugee in pre-war England and then WW2 Paris.
Ricci is as ever frowny, miserable and particularly lovely.
111
Murderball (2005,  R)
Murderball
Again, another Cinemaslave Joe suggestion and with the DVD being slapped with Jackass stickers - not one I would have checked out otherwise. Wow! I am so glad I did - a moving, funny and inspirational tale of paraplegics giving it their all in wheelchair rugby - sounds shit right? - Check it out for one of the best docco's out there!

The Old Dark House (1932,  Unrated)
The Old Dark House
James Whale directs with an emphasis heavy on the atmosphere and with kick arse witty dialogue despite it's age, this film is awesome! Karloff is cast as a dumb but agressive butler to one of the strangest households in cinema history. Recommended!

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
Dark, twisted and beautiful. A real contender for film of 2006, and only loses 1 point for having a one dimensional bad guy and not enough labyrinth scenes.

The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1997,  R)
The People Vs. Larry Flynt
Lacklustre performance from Woody "meh" Harrelson as porn master Larry Flynt. Courtney Love has that weird aura about her where you know it's not good for you, but you just can't seem to stop watching. Ed Norton really is crap in this too, which is the way of things with a lot of his output.

The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Finest film of my 2006. Black Cats and Top Hats! This was marvellous from beginning to end, with nuanced performances, intrigue, emotion, drama and originality. Plus the best cinematography (by Wally Pfister) in a long time. Praise the cinema gods for Chris Nolan! Totally gripping from start to finish, with the films subject matter, i found myself concentrating on the tiniest details, waiting for 'the prestige' - and when it comes.... its worth it.

The Princess Blade (2002,  R)
The Princess Blade
Underwhelming from the day for night opening. The fight scenes were OK, but the middle section really sucked, but any film with an unhappy ending gets an extra point from me!

Pump up the Volume (1990,  R)
Pump up the Volume
Teen angst high school dramas don't come much better than this. Lonely quiet Christian Slater barely says a word at school through the day - but alone at night hosts a pirate radio show as Happy Harry Hard-On, spreading the dirt on what really goes on in school by the corrupt teachers and principal. Samantha Mathis stars as the love interest - with subversive themes and funny one liners you really can't go wrong.
So Be It.

The Red Shoes (1948,  R)
The Red Shoes
Powell and Pressburger hit yet another buls-eye with this beautifully shot and acted tale of the stage and ballet. Jack Cardiff's cinematography is simply superb.

The Road To Guantanamo (2006,  R)
The Road To Guantanamo
Mixture of talking head docco and re-enactment drama. If you didnt know this was true, you would have difficulty believing it wasnt made up. Definitely a case of wrong place wrong time - but their story has more holes than Blackburn, Lancashire..

Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion (1973,  Unrated)
Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion
1972 exploitation flick cum rape revenge drama/women behind bars flick. It has gallons of squirting blood, naked women galore and plenty of mean prison guard offering their idea of fair treatment. It may be the same age as me but it looks pretty fresh today if you ignore some long zoom close ups etc. The dvd transfer I watched was great too.

Silent Hill (2006,  R)
Silent Hill
After a near-miss car accident sees them separated, distraught mother Rose (Mitchell) is left hunting for her daughter Sharon (Ferland) in the deserted town of Silent Hill. It's far from a welcoming place, though, and Rose soon finds some disturbing things lurking in the darkness...

Not as bad as I feared, but not a patch on the others.

300
Yeah it was visually stunning and watching was like all those cool fight scenes from Zulu, Braveheart and LOTR that you didnt want to end rolled into one film.

But, I just turned off the tv 10 minutes ago after watching it, and honestly don't have the slightest urge to get all macho and muscley, shout with a Scots accent a lot, or even use my refuse container's lid as a shield with a french stick as a makeshift sword.

I laughed more than I thought I would though, especially at the 7 foot King Xerxes. What a ponce! LMAO when he eyed up 'Sean Connery Light' from behind and then grabbed his shoulders to give his little neck a rub. *snotted myself laughing*...

Thumb Wars (1999,  Unrated)
Thumb Wars
Hi-larious pastiche of Star Wars with talking thumbs. Incredible facial expressions, comic and timing and way better acting than Jake Lloyd from all involved - with a surprisingly high standard of special effects. It reminded me of the good old days of The Adam and Joe Show.
Oooby Dooby Scooby Dooby Benooby indeed...

Tombs Of The Blind Dead (Noche del terror ciego) (1972,  PG)
Tombs Of The Blind Dead (Noche del terror ciego)
Daft from the outset - with the crappest most unscary undead ever. Big on atmosphere though.

28 Weeks Later... (2007,  R)
28 Weeks Later...
This and it's predecessor owe more to Romero's The Crazies than to zombie films.
Sadly despite some positive reviews, I wasn't impressed with this sequel.
The one word review...

Thin.

21 Grams (2003,  R)
21 Grams
Three lives become intertwined following a tragic accident. Riveting and heartbreaking and finally uplifting - this is a superb film.

Versus (2001,  Unrated)
Versus
There are 666 portals to the other side, and somewhere in Japan lies the home of the 444th. It is here that Prisoner KSC2-303 escapes from his fellow inmates to rendezvous with a group of men who will lead him to safety. After he realises that the price of his freedom is the death of a female hostage, he refuses to comply with his rescuers' plans and blood is spilled.

But when, in the aptly named Forest of Resurrection, long dead yakuza fighters come back to life to avenge their own deaths, a battle against these living dead assassins ensues. Soon his quest for freedom becomes a desperate fight to simply stay alive.

Plenty of action, gore and zombies - but strangely flat and boring.

Wild Zero (1999,  Unrated)
Wild Zero
"Rock n Roll!!!" - In the same vein as Repo Man and Bad Taste - if you ever wondered what a 'mondo movie' was, well check any of them out.

Exploding zombie heads, flying saucers, a she-male love interest, hell, even a zombie love story, a hot pants wearing bad guy - and Guitar Wolf killing zombies with guitar picks!

Oh and the best rock soundtrack in ages! by my current favourite band "Guitar Wolf" who all do a great acting job too.

& this is the only DVD I have bought in 2007 thus far.

The Usual Suspects (1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Show me the keys you fucking cocksucker..! Does anyone else reckon that Keyser Soze is the burnt bloke in the bed with the bandages? He is prime suspect if you ask me ~ Verbal Kint is just too obvious.
