Great anti-heroes in film (not including the many mobster and gangster films, or this list would be 8,000 movies long)

A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
My favourite Kubrick film still holds up as a stylish, intellegent and great social commentary after all these years. A film that has never been duplicated and one of the first non-horror films I became addicted to. It wasn't long after I saw this that all my friends were forced to watch it.

Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) (One Against All) (1998,  Unrated)
Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) (One Against All)
One of the most disturbing films ever made. Imagine if Travis Bickle was even more psychotic and french! Filled with nasty scenes, and the audience I saw it with were really afraid when the warning came up near the end. I loved the way Noe turned the conventional happy ending on it's ear with his downbeat, real happy ending.
3
Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
A perfect film. So great and innovative in every department I'm actually a little shocked it's as mainstream as it is. The seventies sure were a different time.
4
Bad Lieutenant (1992,  R)
Bad Lieutenant
The best religious film ever made. After seeing this I always feel a bit more spiritual. Watch along with The Ninth Configuration.

Christmas Evil (You Better Watch Out) (1980,  R)
Christmas Evil (You Better Watch Out)
My second favourite Xmas film after A Christmas Story. Brandon Maggart's perfomance is truly amazing, it's too bad he wasn't in more films. And after just watching it again, Jackson was far ahead of him time. The image of Santa being chased by villagers with torches in the style of Universal monsters isn't too far from how he's treated by the public today who don't want you saying "Merry Christmas". Brilliant and thoroughly entertaining. Much closer to Taxi Driver or Driller Killer in being the story of a lonely, disturbed man going insane rather than the slasher films everyone wants this film to be. I am a little surprised when after someone watches it they still insist on throwing it in the slasher genre (a genre I love, but c'mon if this is a slasher film then so is Taxi Driver, 187, Death Wish, etc) when it clearly isn't.

L' Âge d'Or (Age of Gold) (The Golden Age) (1979,  Unrated)
L' Âge d'Or (Age of Gold) (The Golden Age)
Un Chien Andalou's closest kin, this is like a feature length version of that film. Excellent.
7
Escape from New York (1981,  R)
Escape from New York
Awesome over the top 80s action film. Snake Plissken is one of the greatest anti-heroes of all time.
8
Combat Shock (1986,  Unrated)
Combat Shock
One of the most depressing films ever made, but if watched non-stop for days becomes an amazing black comedy.
9
Caligola (Caligula) (Edited Version) (1979,  R)
Caligola (Caligula) (Edited Version)
AKA: Little Boots
Forget the edited version, the only reason this is on Flixster is because they won't put on XXX features. This film is truly one of the most awe inspiring failures I've ever seen. I finally got the 3 disc special edition DVD, and I have a sense that the explainations are going to be just as entertaining as this strange film. Just horrid filmmaking, from the high school play lighting to the stinted performances alongside the over the top. A great example of the amateurish filmmaking is the scene where Caligula's sister dies and the music mounts and McDowell starts to act away, and we stay on a shitty wide shot while the music swells. A perfect example of terrible editing (by production no less, no editor has ever taken credit). Must see.
10
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986,  NC-17)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The best film about a serial killer and the best portrayal. I remember after reading about this in Fangoria, trying to see it for years, but living in Canada it was none too easy. Disturbing and incredibly watchable. Remember, it's either you or them.

Interesting list though many of the films I haven't seen. Harvey K was was awesome in bad lieutenant. I think Al Pacinos "MIcheael Corleone" deserves a spot. If you like westerns you have to consider the work Lee van Cleef did wth Sergio Leonne. I would like to see your choices for spots 8-10.
