Onibaba (1965,  Unrated)
Onibaba
Beautiful! Fantastic film about a mother and her daughter in law who turn into predators in 16 or 17 century Japan. They kill soldiers who stumble into their territory, to sell their weapons and armor for food. The film takes a supernatural turn and becomes a very scary story. Some of the most beautiful cinamatography ever.

Matango:Attack of the Mushroom People
Great sets and a ORIGINAL story thats at times scary, drives this great Japanese horror classic. Such a weird film. i love it.

Ringu ( Ring) (1998,  Unrated)
Ringu ( Ring)
very creepy. And full of great imagry. Skip the lame ass American remake.
4
Ringu 2 (2005,  Unrated)
Ringu 2
Better than the first.
5
Ringu 0 (2000,  Unrated)
Ringu 0
weakest one of the trilogy.
6
Suicide Club (2002,  Unrated)
Suicide Club
A smart japanese film that has a message for all. The film starts off with one of the bloodiest spectacles and then settles into a very disturbing film with a powerful social commentary.
7
Pulse (Kairo) (2005,  Unrated)
Pulse (Kairo)
Kairo (pulse) is typical modern Japanese horror. Its ambitous on scale but never really manages to pull anything off. Its repetitive and could use a good trimming of minutes. I really didnt fully understand WHAT it was that was really going on. Not a good thing for a 2hr horror film. There are some inspired moments but ultimatly Kairo is a pretty dull experience that just drags on and on.

Evil Dead Trap (1988,  Unrated)
Evil Dead Trap
This is one of those films ive heard about for years. it has a big cult following. So i finally saw it at the request of a "trusted" friend.
This film has everything a Horror fan could want, Creepy location, amazing visuals, over the top gore, unique murder set peices and a scary looking antagonst. But it does nothing for intelligent characters. Its a by the numbers horror film. Nothing special to make it stand out from the rest! Its full of "typical" horror characters you could care less about. Who make decisions a four year old child would know not to make. And the score is sooo awful. To the point it was getting on my nerves within the first five minutes. It had that bad 80's synthesizer shit happening you would expect to hear in a Fred Olen Ray film.
Other than alot of gore, i dont understand why this film is held amongst horror fans a something speacial. Dissapointing!

Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru)
A Japanese classic that is totally worthy of its reputation and hype.

Za ginipiggu: Akuma no jikken (Guinea Pig: Devil's Experiment) (1985,  NC-17)
Za ginipiggu: Akuma no jikken (Guinea Pig: Devil's Experiment)
Not really a movie, but a film short about a woman being tortured. I saw this 16 years ago. Theres nothing really entertaining about watching a person get tortured for 20 minutes or so. But its got several sequences that from a technical stand makes you wonder how they did that. The sequel is better.

Za ginipiggu 2: Chiniku no hana (Guinea Pig 2: Flowers of Flesh and Blood) (1985,  Unrated)
Za ginipiggu 2: Chiniku no hana (Guinea Pig 2: Flowers of Flesh and Blood)
This is the best of these little torture films. Weird and surreal. This one has some really amazing effects. Way better than the first one. This one actually tries to be artistic.
12
Za ginipiggu 4: Manhoru no naka no ningyo (Guinea Pig 4: Mermaid in the Manhole) (1988,  Unrated)
13
Hei tai yang 731 (Men Behind the Sun) (Squadron 731) (1988,  Unrated)
Hei tai yang 731 (Men Behind the Sun) (Squadron 731)
This is the Cannibal Holocaust of the 80's Men Behind the Sun is FUCKED UP!
But what makes this even more fucked up is that it is based on true events. This one doesnt hold back on anything even little kids are fair game here.
14
Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
I saw this blindly in the theatre. AWSOME revenge flick with a twist ending i didnt see comming!
15
She sha shou (The Killer Snakes) (Killer Snakes... The Hiss of Death) (1974,  Unrated)
16
Audition (Ôdishon) (1999,  R)
Audition (Ôdishon)
great film with a real fucked up psycho bitch. The ending is hard to watch.
17
The Host (Gwoemul) (2007,  R)
The Host (Gwoemul)
Tight little film. I have never been into the giant monster films, ala Godzilla, so iam no epert in this feild. But, The Host has the most spectacular introduction of a giant monster ive ever seen. As it terrorizes the people along the boardwalk. Its pretty breathtaking.
Family bond is really what this film is about. Good performances from all involved.
18
Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer) (2001,  R)
Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer)
over rated rubbish with lots of gore.
19
Sakura no mori no mankai no shita (Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees) (1975,  Unrated)
Sakura no mori no mankai no shita (Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees)
Beautiful scenery and a sadistic story. Its great to see Tomisaburo Wakayama outside of the Lone Wolf and Cub series. Here hes playing a completely different character...he's basically pussy whipped here. Going to great and graphic lengths to appease his wife. Alot of fake looking heads...but hey its more about the sadistic side of this film that matters
20
Versus (2001,  Unrated)
Versus
one of the most over-rated peices of garbage ive ever seen in my life. Great story idea is killed by the use of over stylized action set peices. This film is one big excuse for stylized action. Done horribly bad. I fuckin hated it!
21
Zero Woman (1974,  Unrated)
Zero Woman
Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs- starts off good enough, but by the middle of the film it desends into absudity. Miki Sugimoto's performance as the Zero Woman is so stiff and laughable. She is supposed to be delivering vigilante style justice but all she does is stand there looking like she has a yeast infection. She does not live up to her reputation we were led to believe she had. Within the first 5 minutes of the film she is kicking ass and taking no prisoners. What happened. She literally stands in the backgroung and does nothing.
Zero Woman is not a total throw away. Its loaded to the brim with sleazy violence and sex. But its all really laughable. This is bestenjoyed with drunken friends.
22
Sex & Fury (1973,  R)
Sex & Fury
you got to love a film that about 10 minutes into it....the female lead, Ocho is taking a bath when there is an assasination attempt on her life. Leaping out of the tub, only wearing her birthday suit and armed with a sword, she kills everyone in a awsome bloody mess! This basically sets the tone for the rest of this great film.
Sex and Fury is a great Pinky Violence film. One of the best forms of exploitation.
Also starring Christina Lindberg, star of Thriller - A Cruel Picture.

Female Yakuza Tale - Inquisition and Torture (2005,  Unrated)
24
Kaidan nobori ryu (The Blind Woman's Curse) (1971,  Unrated)
Kaidan nobori ryu (The Blind Woman's Curse)
Stylishly made, The Blind Womans Curse suffers from having a cast of idiot characters. Almost every chaacter in the film is a idiot. And they are all aware of it, constantly refering to each other as idiots or jackasses. Its almost too much. But the actual film is gorgeously shot. The swirling primary colors echos the likes of Bava and Argento. The sets themselves looks as if they were crafted by Bava himself at times. The attention to detail is incredible. There are times were the film looks otherworldly.
The film is a bizzare mix of genres. Part Yakuza , horror and even a dose of Pinky Violence thrown into it. The film really relies on its look and the strong performance of Meiko Kaji. She is gorgeous and definatly commands your attention. The violence is brutal and bloody.
25
Kaidan (Kwaidan) (Ghost Stories) (1964,  Unrated)
Kaidan (Kwaidan) (Ghost Stories)
A highly stylized and beautiful art film thats also a erie horror anthology. The sets are jaw dropping most of the time. The colors are fucking amazing. The sets in The Woman In The Snow and Houichi the Earless especially are incredible. I never found the film to be too slow, as it has a reputation as being a slow one. With gorgeous scenery as Kwaidan has its easy to pass the time chewing up the visual scenery. The storys themselves are pretty well told and each segment really lets the story unfold at a nice pace. This is high class art and one of the best Japanese horror films ive ever seen.

Boryoku Gai (Violent Streets) (1974,  Unrated)
Boryoku Gai (Violent Streets)
This little seen gem is seriously one of the best early 70's crime films! The american title is Violent Streets. Although Japanese made, this film is heavily influenced by European cinema. The influence is so great that it doesnt even feel like a Japanese film. There is not one boring moment here! This film starts and goes and goes and goes! From the opening scene to the finale i was totaly mesmerized by its greatness! Theres Transvestite Killers, lots of bloody broken bottles, gushy squibs and most importantly a great story! This is the first film ive seen from Hideo Gosha and i cant wait to see his Samurai films now!
27
Lady Snowblood (Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld) (Shurayukihime) (2005,  R)
Lady Snowblood (Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld) (Shurayukihime)
Essential veiwing for those who love Pinky Violence and Samurai films. Lady Snowblood is really well done. The story is told in chapters and its really fleshed out well. Theres some great use of the original Manga comic throughout. The fights are pretty brutal with lots of stylish arterial spray! And Meiko Kaji is freaking gorgeous as she swings a blade and does the damage! The story is full of great suprises and the score is fantastic! Well directed, well acted and just goddamn freaking cool!

Five Deadly Venoms (1978,  R)
Five Deadly Venoms
Classic Shaw Bros. Kung-Fu flick has lots of colorful set pieces and action. Each of the deadly Poisons are great ranging from the wall crawling Lizard, the almost invincable Toad, the man with a thousand legs The Centipede, the pincers of The Scorpion and the strikes of the Snake. Although never referred to it in the film there is a 6th venom. He is a hybrid of the five venoms. But is the weakest of the five because he has never completely studied any of the five. He is also the one character that provides a bit of comedy relief as he bumbles his way around.
Released in 1978 and directed by Chang Cheh who directed several other legendary films like The One-Armed Swordsman.
The plot involves the Hybrid Venom being dispatched by his dying master to look out for a friends fortune. He is afraid that the venoms have been using their skills for evil and is afraid his friend is under threat. The Hybrid Venom is to track down the venoms and see if they are an allie or a threat.
The film is stylish. Chang Cheh lights darkend dungeons with vibrant colors. Mario Bava would have been proud! Some of the best moment come during the first several minutes of the film when we are introduced to the Poison Clan. Cheh uses brilliant and memorable imagry for each of them.
The fights are pretty amazing. Especially the 5 man fight at the end. It has to be seen to be believed. And with a complex story the weaves all around The Five Deadly Venoms definatly deserves its cult status!
But this is not without its faults. Theres a little bit of zanny-ness through out that i found a little distracting. But essentialy i was really digging this. A must for fans of Kung-Fu and Shaw Bros flicks!
