Asian Horror films

Great, or at least decent asian horror/thrillers. Some are gory, some are just creepy, some will make you sleep with the light on.

Shutter (They Are Around Us) (2004,  R)
Shutter (They Are Around Us)
I'm not easily scared by movies anymore, but this one made me jump a few times. Definitely worth seeing. Also, Ananda Everingham looks a LOT like Orlando Bloom. Only better.

Suicide Club (2002,  Unrated)
Suicide Club
Very strange movie, but really not that hard to understand. Subliminal messages and trend-following pretty much sums it up, imo. I think it's helpful to know something about Japanese society before you can get everything that's going on. Lots of metaphors/symbolism.

Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call) (2003,  R)
Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call)
I know this has some really creepy moment in it, but I can't remember what they were. Months after seeing it, I mostly remember it being silly but kind of fun to watch.

Yogen (Premonition) (2004,  R)
Yogen (Premonition)
The special effects are low budget and laughable at times, but otherwise very entertaining.

Memento Mori (,  Unrated)
Memento Mori
It's unfortunate that these kinds of movies get billed as horror films... because they aren't. This is mostly a drama about two teen lesbians in a Korean girls school. It was ok, but the "scary" elements kinda ruined an otherwise interesting story.

Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters) (2003,  R)
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
I've seen this about eight times, and it never gets old. More eerie than scary, it has a very different look and feel than most asian horror films, or even horror films in general.

Audition (Ôdishon) (1999,  R)
Audition (Ôdishon)
Probably wouldn't be most people's cup of tea. Very slow and almost boring until the very end. Then, lots of gore and tension.

Three...Extremes (Saam gaang yi) (2005,  R)
Three...Extremes (Saam gaang yi)
Box was lovely, but felt somewhat empty.

Dumplings was twisted, but I really enjoyed Bai Ling and I would love to see the feature length version.

Cut was the best of the 3... funny at times, great visuals, and very layered. Pay close attention to the ending of this one, there's more to it than most seem to realize.

These short films aren't meant to be "scary" so if that's what you're expecting, don't bother.

Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
Favorite movie ever. Great cinematography, enthralling plot, and Oh Dae Su is an amazing character. Also has one of the best fight scenes in history.

Ju-on: The Grudge (Ju-on 3) (2003,  R)
Ju-on: The Grudge (Ju-on 3)
Overhyped for sure, but not terrible. The ghost makeup is ridiculous and kept pulling me out of the story... it was distracting. Other than that, the story is interesting.

The Eye (Gin gwai) (2002,  R)
The Eye (Gin gwai)
Some nice twists... much better than better than I expected, and it's become one of my favorites.
