Empire of the Sun
The direction of this movie is so precise, it is a pleasure to watch. Probably one of Spielberg's better movies but is sadly under-rated. Humour, thought provoking, captivating and emotional... all the things a good drama needs. Christian Bale's intensity holds this entire movie together and just watching him leaves you stunned. His transformation of character is so entertaining considering the backdrop the movie is set against. It's unique war perspective and atmosphere created by Tom Stoppard entices and by the end of the movie creates a exhausting finish. Look out for Ben Stiller's one liner... echoed throughout the movie. Great Stuff.

Harsh Times
One of the best movies I've seen all summer, not because it's especially clever or sophisticated but because you don't expect it for being something different. Its gritty, it's dark and its generally a well made film. For a plot that consists of two guys drinking and smoking weed and just generally doing nothing in an urban neighbourhood... I just couldn't stop watching!

Christian Bale is haunting in this performance and this is probably one of his best movies. Freddy Rodriguez is equally good as Bale's support and together they have this very charismatic partnership. To be fair the movie doesn't exactly have the most extensive of plots... but you do feel like it covers a lot of ground whilst you're watching it. Also as the movie progresses it becomes very uncomfortable and kinda scary with Bale's instability. Think modern day Deer Hunter... but in a similar style to Training Day. A slow burning character driven movie.... and that just happens to be what I like.

However for some, you'll either love it or you'll hate it...

Rescue Dawn
I'm still in two minds about this one...
On one hand it has the legdendary Christian Bale in it. On the other it kinda bored the pants off me.
One of the main things this movie had going for it in my opinion, is one of the finest, poetic and captivating opening sequences that has even introduced a movie of this genre. Sadly not a lot else.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were good I haven't seen any of the others but believe me there are quite a few that I want to see so hopefully I will see them soon too.
