Matador (1986,  NC-17)
Matador
Matador is an interesting film. Its intention is to disturb the audience in any way possible. The opening 4 minutes give us an idea of the psychological mess that lies ahead. Although it's an interesting concept and somewhat controversial for its time, it's good, despite the incredibly stupid and moronic ending. Almodóvar had talent by then already, as so did Antonio Banderas.

Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown)
Unbelievable anf fun situations throughout with a very nice cast and desperately hilarious performances. One of the best films to start with Almodovar.

¡Átame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) (1990,  NC-17)
¡Átame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!)
Controversial for its time, but for more modern times it is a good romantic story, a little bit crazy. Both Banderas and Abril are perfect, and make an amazing chemistry.

Tacones Lejanos (High Heels) (1991,  R)
Tacones Lejanos (High Heels)
A very excentric drama by Spanish master Pedro Almodovar. Spellbinding female performances by both Marisa Paredes and (especially) Victoria Abril. It was good overall; a little bit dramatic and over-the-top, but OK. Perhaps the second best choice to begin with Almodovar.

Live Flesh (Carne trémula)
Carne Trémula is a fair, somewhat thrilling adaptation of Ruth Rendell's novel, and even so, despite its good structure, performances and suspense, turned out to be an extremely personalized Almodovarian perspective. Good to watch, a mature film for Almodovar's career, but definitely not his best.

Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother)
Amazing female character study by Almodovar. It may be a little controversial (just as his style is), but it is an awesome work.

Hable con Ella (Talk to Her)
An outstandingly harrowing and moving character study which results in a gem among the greatest contemporary foreign masterpieces, thanks to Almodovar.

Bad Education (La Mala educación) (2004,  NC-17)
Bad Education (La Mala educación)
Excellent and very graphic drama. You can notice right away all of the effort Garcia Bernal went through for achieving an effective Spanish accent. The story is awesome and Almodovar's direction is top notch, as always. Great acting.

Volver (2006,  R)
Volver
Volver is a superbly crafted drama, featuring wonderful Penelope Cruz. The mix of drama and comedy is wonderfully achieved as a final result of the plot, the script, the acting, Almodovar's direction and its pace. Another Spanish gem thanks to Pedro. I totally love the scene where Penelope Cruz sings "Volver".
