The Divorcee (1930, Unrated)
A good film, but, perhaps because of the time in which it was made, it tends to take the old-fashioned view that women are predominantly responsible for all marital strife. Quite to the contrary, it is the husband who strays first in this story, and who then tries to assure his wife that his indiscretion really "didn't mean a thing". But when the wife, in a state of drunken grief, also commits adultery, her husband leaves her and the film seems to ultimately place the preponderance of guilt upon the woman, without addressing the attendant hypocrisy. |

As Good As It Gets (1997, PG-13)
Good flick. I was kind of bothered, however, by the lack of sympathy and understanding Nicholson's character received from all the other characters. He has obsessive-compulsive disorder, and naturally this inhibits his ability to pursue a healthy, constructive social life. Yes, he could be a real prick at times, and no, his OCD should not be a catch-all excuse for inexcusable, offensive behavior, but nor can he be expected to function like a "normal" person. Healthy social interaction is extremely difficult for him, and that needs to be understood and accepted by anyone who would wish to be his friend. |
