"Parting Glances"
was in 1986 ahead of it's time with the way it handled the subject matter of AIDS.
"Steve Buscemi" is just as amazing an actor then as he is now in his break out role as a somewhat washed up rocker with HIV/Aids.
The main storyline is that of His Character"Nick's) ex Michael "Richard Ganoung" dealing with his lover going to Africa on a long business assignment while still loving and tending to "Nick" Buscemi's Character, making sure he eats and takes his meds.
In Michael's heart Nick will always be the love of his life and thats bitter sweet.
Enter the club scenes at The Limelight"they dont mention it,but I have been to that club enough to know that's where it was filmed" and the party scenes with all the steriotypical characters,"the over weight effeminent bitter vicious gay man","The ever so undestanding overweight fag hag" played well by Kathy Kinney " of Drew Carey fame. The young promiscuous pretty boy.etc..
I very much enjoyed the movie and it still holds up today, even more so for it's nostalgic merit.
Shelter
Is the kind of Alternative lifestyle movie that should be applauded.
Reason being, the two main characters Don't have aids, they aren't Promiscuous they're just regular guys who just happen to be gay.
This movie is so enjoyable
Partly due to the soundtrack, emphasis on the song "Lie To Me" by Shane Mack .
It's a story about a young man Zack played by Trevor Wright struggling with family, responsibilities,Love, acceptance and the fear of being different as well as feeling guilty about being poor .
Zack's love intrest Shaun played by Brad Rowe is older self assured ,comfortable with who he is and doesn't have financial worries not to mention Zack's best friends brother..
Zack falls in love with Shaun,Shaun has been infatuated with Zack for a couple of years unbeknownst to Zack, When Zack tries to disassociate himself from those feelings out of self worth and family issues,Shaun is patient, loving and kind and the rest makes for a beautiful alternative love story.
"Ma Vie En Rose" Is the story of a little boy named "Ludovic" who desperately wants to be a girl.
While most boys his age want to be cowboys or Soldiers Ludovic dreams of living in a fantasy world where dolls are larger than life and he is a princess. He is not free to do the things that feel natural for him to do ,That other people say are not allowed or socially accepted. He creates an imaginary friend name Pam who is a Barbie like doll that plays with him and takes him on journeys far away from the reality of his confused and troubled life.
It's a heart breaking story of how people ostracize and condemn things and people they don't understand.
In Ludovic"s heart he is a girl and doesn't understand why people ridicule and torment him "cant they see it ?" he must think. He rebels against all the attempts to make him stop acting out his fantasies and wearing what he feels is proper and comfortable attire for him and then his neighbors and acquaintances perceive him as sick ,disturbed and in need of help when in reality they are the ones that need the help so they can stop being judgmental and ignorant.
While the other people around Ludovic are like circles and can roll freely he is a square that does not roll smoothly and will endure all the bumps and have a rocky ride ahead of him due to the fact he is shaped differently. This movie is a must for anyone who might think their child is exhibiting signs of transgenderism during their early years and for people who cant think out of the box so they can put themselves in Ludovic's tiny yet heavy shoes or for anyone who wants to see a beautiful story.
"Mysterious Skin" Is so powerful and moving that I cant get it out of my head. The acting by Joseph Gorden Levitt,Brady Corbet and Michelle Trachtenberg is Oscar worthy as is the film itself.
Not for the sexually squeamish or the homophobic, this movie left me breathless.
absoloutly one of the the most powerful films I have ever seen.
With an ending so intense I cried I was angry and I felt the pain of the characters as if it were my own.One of the charaters "Corbet" hardened yet very affected by "the ordeal",the other"Levitt" in denial and devastated by it.It raised the question to me, Is it better to remember the truth or to believe something that takes you away from this planet safe from the real aliens and monsters we call humans.
It's not often you come across a gay themed slasher movie and "Hellbent" is just that.
It has some nice eye candy with lots of hot men half naked running around and some good kills but the main gimmck of this film is that it is again a gay slasher flick.
Overall enjoyable but not overly memorable either.
If your gay and love slashers of course it's a must have.
Noah's arc is so much more realistic than Queer As Folk.
At least the gay friends I have, in this series the characters are more about love than just one night stands and drugs. The sexual tension between Noah and Wade is too hot for words. The characters are so different personality wise yet they share a common bond, that being friendship and loyalty, this is a group of friends I would want on my side.
I was very disheartened to find out they cancelled the series after this season, I'm sure it had to do with it being an African American themed show and that's a shame on a network like LOGO that is a gay channel and should know how it feels to be discriminated against.
Anyway..BUY and savor season 1 and 2~!!
