1
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
It's not a superhero film: it is a dark crime saga fueled by fantastic performances and amazing direction.
2
Spider-Man 2 (2004,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 2
The best super hero movie ever! I love the ending.
3
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
My second favorite comic book movie of all time. Christian Bale is great as Batman. There are so many great things about this movie, I don't know where to start! One of the best of the year.
4
Superman Returns (2006,  PG-13)
Superman Returns
It is spectacular. I loved every minute of it. Director Bryan Singer is a genius.
5
X2 (2003,  PG-13)
X2
Better than the first one. I like how they have mixed politics into a comic book movie. The thing that makes this X-Men and the first one better than the third installment is that, with the first two, I felt like I was watching a movie about real people. It made me believe in the characters. With the third one, it just felt like I was watching a fun comic book movie. Bryan Singer is the best. However, the third movie's premise does kick the other two's butts. This movie really makes me want to start reading the comic books to learn more about the characters (as dorky as that may sound).
6
The Incredibles (2004,  PG)
The Incredibles
Pixar does it again. They never seem to fail in making a great movie. All the characters are great, and the action scenes are incredible. The Boundin' thing at the beginning isn't my favorite short film, but it is okay. This is one of the best superhero movies ever.
7
Unbreakable (2000,  PG-13)
Unbreakable
This movie is such a great follow-up to The Sixth Sense. M. Night Shyamalan is so creative... where does he come up with these spectacular ideas for movies? This was supposedly the first movie in a trilogy, but, sadly, I don't think any sequels will ever be made. Too bad... they probably would have been really good.
8
A History of Violence (2005,  R)
A History of Violence
A History of Violence is one of the best films of the year. Maria Bello and Ashton Holmes gave the standout performances, but Viggo Mortensen is also quite good as both a quiet man and a killer. The closing scene is the perfect ending to an amazing film.
9
X-Men (2000,  PG-13)
X-Men
A good start to the series. All of the characters are complex and well-developed.
10
Men in Black (1997,  PG-13)
Men in Black
It's funny and has something for everyone. Will Smith is a perfect MIB agent. I won't ever look at tabloids the same again.
11
Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
I was really impressed with the visual splendor that is Zack Snyder's Watchmen. As a fan of the graphic novel by Alan Moore, I knew that a lot would be cut out, but I was surprised that almost every storyline remains intact. But I did have problems with the film. First of all, why even have Bulbastis if you're not going to say something about it? Both times I saw the film, when Bulbastis comes on screen, I heard a lot of WTF?s. Also, whoever plays Richard Nixon is a horrible actor. I hated him. And his obnoxiously large nose. The make-up really bothered me in this film. Along with Nixon's gigantic nose, the aging make-up, especially on Silk Spectre I, is terrible. Seriously. I could have done a better job. Last, I felt like there were several anachronisms in the film. For example, Silk Spectre II says at one point about Nite Owl's goggles, "these rock." Seriously? "These rock"? That was either horrible improvising on Malin Akerman's part or a horribly written line. The script was also a weak point of the film. The only amazing dialogue was taken right out of the comic. Don't get me wrong: I really liked the movie. There were several amazing parts, including the jailbreak, the Manhattan on Mars sequence accompanied by Philip Glass, and the simply astounding opening credits with "The Times They Are A-Changin'" playing in the background. I would literally pay $10 just to watch that opening credits. No joke. And the end scene . . . amazing. I got chills with the last line. I would also like to talk about the fact that they continually said "Watchmen." In the novel, they never actually utter that word, and I think that adds to the symbolism. In the film, it practically hits you over the head. Now about the cast . . . it is very hit or miss. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jackie Earl Haley, Patrick Wilson, and Billly Crudup are AMAZING. Perfect casting there. But Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, and Carla Gugino are all very flat and uninteresting. Interesting casting choices, but extremely hit or miss. Overall, I would give Watchmen a 4 / 5 star rating. Go see it. Because everyone's going to be talking about it.
12
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
A good movie. It really makes you think. I thought that it was really interesting how a terrorist is the main character and (possibly?) the story's hero.
13
300 (2007,  R)
300
Wow. Better than expected. Surprisingly, every performance was strong. I don't usually like movies like this, so I was pleasantly surprised. The effects and cinematography/direction in this movie is amazing. When the rock music was cranked up and the warriors were moving in slo-mo, I knew I was watching something special.
14
Wanted (2008,  R)
Wanted
An awesome action flick in the vein of The Matrix.
15
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
A clever mix of film noir, comic books, and lots of people doing bad things. The style of the film was wonderful. The second time I watched it, I enjoyed it a lot more. The huge ensemble cast is great.
16
Spider-Man (2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man
Not as good as the second one, but it's lots of fun. Tobey Maguire does a good job of portraying the "geek" and the hero. There are definately cheesy moments in this movie, but there are so many great moments that they outweigh the bad ones.
17
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
I LOVE: Robert Downey, Jr.'s comeback performance.
I LIKE: Pepper Potts and Tony Stark's quirky relationship.
I DISLIKE: Terrence Howard's performance.
I HATE: Jeff Bridges as the "villain."
BOTTOM LINE: Robert Downey, Jr. propels Iron Man to a higher level of quality than the film actually earns. I wish the plot was stronger.
18
Superman (1978,  PG)
Superman
Definitely an entertaining film, but it is SUPER cheesy. A lot of it is love/hate with me.
19
Hellboy (2004,  PG-13)
Hellboy
This movie is hard to explain. It is a comic book movie, but it doesn't really feel like it. It's kind of like a mix between The Matrix, Men in Black, and Van Helsing. Hellboy is perfectly cast. My favorite character was Abe Sapien. He was really cool. The special effects aren't that great at times, but the character development in the movie makes up for it. It is definately underrated.
20
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008,  PG-13)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
Two things annoyed me with this film: 1) Hellboy as a kid in the beginning is quite possibly the WORST child actor I have ever seen, and 2) I swear they changed how Abe Sapien's voice sounds from the original. Other than that, I enjoyed the fun visuals and Ron Perlman's inspired performance. I would say that I like the two films in the series equally.
21
Persepolis (2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
A wonderfully non-traditional animated film.
22
Road to Perdition (2002,  R)
Road to Perdition
I thought this movie was just average until the ending, which is unforgettable. Sam Mendes, director of Road to Perdition, American Beauty, and Jarhead is definately talented.
23
Batman (1989,  PG-13)
Batman
Tim Burton's directorial style is great. Danny Elfman's score is one of the best ever. This is definately not the best superhero movie, but I think that all comic book movies have borrowed a little from this movie. It really paved the way for future comic book adaptations.
24
The Incredible Hulk (2008,  PG-13)
The Incredible Hulk
I enjoyed it more than the first... I just wish Ed Norton had more to work with here.
25
American Splendor (2003,  R)
American Splendor
An unusual movie that I actually liked. I thought it was pretty funny too.
26
Batman Returns (1992,  PG-13)
Batman Returns
Every Tim Burton fan should really watch this movie. I enjoyed this one as much as the first one. I really liked the whole Catwoman story. The ending is great, but the future sequels, sadly, did not build off of it.
27
Superman II (1981,  PG)
Superman II
It was okay... I was a little disappointed. Some parts are definitely cheesy, but not terribly cheesy. The first was a lot more entertaining, but the new Superman Returns is definately the best Superman movie.
28
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006,  PG-13)
X-Men: The Last Stand
This is a very entertaining popcorn movie. It's fun from the beginning to the end. Its plot hinted at pure genius, and it had so much potential. The idea of a "cure" for the mutant X gene is really cool. But, by the end, I felt that the idea wasn't carried out to its full potential. I miss Bryan Singer. With him, I think that this movie would have been a lot better. But Brett Ratner does a sufficient job (it's not like they hired the guy from The Dukes of Hazzard or anything). All of the mutants are awesome. I think my new favorite one is Angel. He didn't get enough on-screen time, though. He was underused. The girl who plays Kitty Pryde is not very good. What happened to Nightcrawler? Phoenix creeps me out. Ian McKellen is great, as usual (as Magneto). I hope that they make another X-Men movie, or maybe they could do a TV show. That would be awesome! The final battle is well done. There are so many casualities in this movie... it's really hard to keep track! Despite all of its shortcomings, this third installment of the X-Men series is pure fun and exciting entertainment. The twist at the end gave me goosebumps. Don't forget to stay after the credits for one last surprise! Best of the X-Men movies: #2, then #1, and followed by this one, #3. It could've been longer.
29
Hancock (2008,  PG-13)
Hancock
It was entertaining, but I wish that the filmmakers would have focused more on quirky humor and drama rather than the obnoxious "ass humor."
30
Hulk (2003,  PG-13)
Hulk
This movie is underrated. I really like how it focuses on the development of the Hulk's character, but it suffers from the lack of action. Jennifer Connelly and Eric Bana are really good. Good direction from Ang Lee. I just don't think that this movie is "mainstream" enough for the general public to understand. The ending is really, really good.
31
Daredevil (2003,  PG-13)
Daredevil
It was actually a good movie. I enjoyed it. Without a doubt, it is definately cheesy, but that is what makes it so much fun. My favorite scene is the fight between Matt and Elektra in the playground. It is cheesy, but it is also hilarious and exciting. This movie is definately darker than other superhero movies. I liked Ben Affleck as Daredevil. Good choice of casting.I really like how they show Daredevil "seeing" with the sounds around him (especially with the rain thing). This movie has been bashed by a lot of people, but don't underestimate it. You will be surprised at how entertaining it is.
32
X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009,  PG-13)
X-Men Origins - Wolverine
Overall, this movie was a disappointment. It used way too many visual effects (for example, the pointless CGI claws) and should have focused on the relationships instead. It might have been marginally fun to watch, but it was dumb fun, instead of smart fun, which the first two X-Men films had.
33
Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
Don't even get me started.
34
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007,  PG)
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
I'm all for the lighthearted, fun comic book movie, but the Fantastic Four movies sacrifice plot for cheap laughs. The Silver Surfer is undeniably cool, but he's boring and bland. Once again, the only cast member who seems to fit their part is The Human Torch. With a better story, better director, and a better plot, it would have been good. Instead, it just seems like they wanted to make money, not entertainment.
35
Men in Black II (2002,  PG-13)
Men in Black II
The first one is so much better. Rosario Dawson, why are you in this movie?
36
Fantastic Four (2005,  PG-13)
Fantastic Four
It wasn't that great. I didn't really care what happened to any of them. I did like the Human Torch though. He's cool. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.
37
My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006,  PG-13)
My Super Ex-Girlfriend
Not a terrible movie... not a very good one though. I liked Luke Wilson in it, and Uma was okay. The movie relies too much on a running sex joke. This movie did have good ideas going for it (the idea of dumping a superhero, her injuring him in bed, and his best friend character) but the best friend ends up being annoying and the sex thing being lame. The shark idea is horrible and so random that it was ALMOST funny. It's an okay movie that you will enjoy if you don't mind watching a poorly put together comedy.
38
Ghost Rider (2007,  PG-13)
Ghost Rider
I thought it was boring. There wasn't a single good action sequence. With huge plot holes and pointless slo-mo scenes, Ghost Rider isn't worth your time.
39
Batman Forever (1995,  PG-13)
Batman Forever
What a terrible movie. I hated Val Kilmer, I hated Nicole Kidman, and I REALLY hated Tommy Lee Jones. Jim Carrey manages to score a couple of laughs, but he ends up being too over the top, as always. Thank you Christopher Nolan for saving the Batman reputation.
40
Catwoman (2004,  PG-13)
Catwoman
Bring back Michelle Pfeiffer! This is one of the most poorly made films I have ever seen. The action scenes are stupid and boring, the special effects were terrible, the script was unintentionally funny, and why don't they ever talk about Gotham City? Oh, and it has the worst "evil conspiracy" ever: using make-up products to kill people and take over the world. I'm glad I watched it on AMC and didn't waste a cent on it.
41
Batman & Robin (1997,  PG-13)
Batman & Robin
Is this film intentionally bad or not? I don't get it...
